Valve software has filed a trademark application for the "DOTA," leading to speculation that the company is working on an officially licensed Defense of the Ancients product. Defense of the Ancients, if you're not in the know, is one of the most popular Warcraft 3 mods out there, from developer IceFrog. Defense of the Ancients is custom game built using the Warcraft 3 map editor in which players control a single hero in a team battle to destroy the other team's base.
We have no official word from Valve, but are expecting an official announcement soon.

Yeah, that's kind of old news. The trademark we didn't know about, but we already knew IceFrog got hired by Valve. There was also a message on Jon St. John's Twitter account (voice of Duke Nukem) saying that he had just finished recording for "DotA," as Joystiq reported almost a week ago. Hard to believe he was talking about the WC3 map. So, yeah... this is kinda old news.

Isn't Heroes of Newerth just an awesome version of DotA anyway? Why does Valve need to hop on that when there's already HoN to throw money at?

Wont be able to outdo League of Legends. Its too set in place and popular.

I was just thinking how I really needed another DotA clone.

You have it all wrong. This is just what they are going to rename Minecraft once they acquire it in a month or two.
Meanwhile, in some alternate dimension, Valve releases the Oranger Box which includes Episode 3, Portal 5, Left 4 Dead 4, and Team 2Fort. Its release coincides with Duke Nukem Forever and features and unlockable cigar item for all classes if you preordered DNF.

A DotA designed by valve (and by extension Icefrog)? Throw an HoN style ladder/leaver protection system on top of someone who actually knows how the hell to balance and you've got yourself a DotA I would actually pay for.
I'M SO HAPPY!!!!

That's just fantastic. What has IceFrog created? First the outstanding success of DotA, then the attention paid by Basshunter, then both Heroes of Newerth AND League of Legends, and now this? Did he just hit on a winning formula, or is there some form of digital cocaine drawn from its similarity to WoW?

I guess Valve REALLY doen't like Basshunter! (I'll give you a minute to look that one up...)
