Change, for the most part, is a good thing. But not everyone is comfortable with change. Sometimes, the one thing you've grown accustomed to is the last thing you want to change, even if it's for the better. Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. Adam uses Madden NFL 11's new Game Flow system as an example of how innovations within a gaming franchise, even if they're for the better, can often anger their core fanbase. What do you think of the Game Flow system? How do you feel about the character model changes in Infamous 2?

There's people that like change and people who don't. Same thing goes for people getting all up in arms about the slightest different feature but at the same time saying they get bored with lack of change and innovation. Like with other forms of entertainment, game developers can't satisfy everyone, which is why people need to keep an open mind., but of course that's easier said than done especially since there's many people who feel like they're entitled to everything when in fact they're not. Example: the Left 4 Dead 2 situation, and the Diablo 3 situation could also be used here.

With out change everything starts to become a cliche. You have to give a little to get a little.

I think that Douglas Adams wrote in one of his books that technology falls into three different categories that have varying levels of overlap, and they are basically (a) the technology that was of the previous generation which is considered out-dated and needs to be replaced, (b) technology that is of the current generation which is considered modern and (in a sense) fashionable, and finally (c) technology that is in fact ahead of its time and is regarded with much scrutiny and suspicion. Another part of this model is that which category a particular technology or concept falls into very much depends on the person's age.
Alternatively and in regards to hard core fans: anyone below your skill level is a noob, anyone at your skill level is a peer, and anyone above your skill level must obviously be cheating. That started at the dawn of competitive gaming... which was probably before I could distinguish a computer from a tv.

But remember just like Left 4 Dead 2 fans will whine and scream all they want but they will still buy the game. We can complain all we want on the internet but when we're back in real life things might be the opposite.

I thought they got rid of the new character model in Infamous 2 because of the negative response from the fans.
