One of the highlights of the vast array of panels at Comic-Con last month, was Martin Campbell's Green Lantern. While we've still only seen early glimpses of the film, with just under a year until its June 17, 2011 release, word is going around that we may be set for more -- specifically TWO more films.
According to BleedingCool, a source of theirs was hanging with some of the film's production staff in a New Orleans bar (where the film is currently shooting) and was lucky enough to extract what may be critical info out of the possibly inebriated, unwitting whistle-blower. If that info is correct, then it seems that the Green Lantern sequel will begin filming before the first film even hits theaters. Moreover, it will shoot along with the prospective third film back-to-back! It's a process that evokes the way the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. When all's said and done, we could have three movies in three years!
According to the report:
"So confident of a smash are Warner Bros, that they already making big plans to use current shooting location New Orleans as a stand-in for DC’s Coast City in the sequel, which will be announced for either a Summer or Christmas 2012 release, depending on where the Flash movie fits in."
A potential sequel to Ryan Reynold's turn as DC's emerald crusader was actually known from a few months back when scribes for the first film, Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim, were brought back on board to pen the second effort, along with another franchise in the making, The Flash. That news, alone seemed to imply heavy-duty confidence in Green Lantern on the part of Warner. However, filming back-to-back sequels could imply two things: First, it could be that Warner wants to flood the market with comic book films of their own to match the two-pronged presence that Marvel is going to bring with The Avengers and its related films, as well as their other rebooted properties over at Sony. (Marc Webb's Spider-Man, X-Men: First Class, Ghost Rider 2, etc.) The other, is that Ryan Reynolds may not wish to be tied-down to the franchise for too long, and this is a way to get a respectable trilogy out of the franchise, while letting him be on his way ASAP (presumably to Deadpool.)
So, were you impressed by what we've seen of Green Lantern, thus far? Would a possible order for TWO sequels be justified?
