Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

According to Activision/Blizzard, gamers have purchased over 20 million map packs for Call of Duty games since the launch of the franchise.

"The Call of Duty franchise is unique in the world of entertainment and delivers one of the best multiplayer experiences ever," said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard in a statement. "We are thrilled to deliver to fans exciting and engaging content that has the intensity they have come to expect from the franchise."

The first Call of Duty came out way back in 2003, and the series (as I'm sure you know) is among the most influential, important franchises in gaming history.

...So apparently those gamers calling for a boycott of Modern Warfare 2 over the price of the map packs, or the lack of dedicated servers, or insert-gripe-here didn't have much of an effect on sales. Not that I blame anyone -- Call of Duty is the gold standard of multiplayer, so if you're into shooters, you sort of have to play this game, no matter what the map-packs cost and who sets up the servers. In a way, Activision/Infinity Ward has created such a tight game that they have you over a barrel. The big question: In five years, will the franchise still be as big? With the main dudes at Infinity Ward having left, will Activision be able to continue carrying the torch?

How are they adding it up? Because they shouldn't count those four maps twice. As a guy who ended up with negative XP after that huge hack happened a while back, I think I have a right to be upset when they talk about how pretty the penny we gave them was.

The funny part is how many times they got to count the maps they just recolored and shipped with the other maps.

I bought both map packs when I was playing MW2 on a daily basis. I really enjoyed most maps (overgrown sucks ass) The pricing for most people might seem steep for me I thought the price was fair. My issue is not the fact of why and who or how many sold. Buy them if you like ...don't buy if not. My problem however is the NON-STOP cheating and modding in this game. I'm tired of playing and being glitched or receive 10 messages per hour about a 10th prestige lobby for 1600 MS points. How bout Activision/Infinty Ward take some of that money earned and pay more attention to fixing all the glitching and modding. I haven't played MW2 for over 2 months. I am glad tho I can still get over 30 bucks for it on ebay or amazon. With Halo Reach coming out Sept 14th and Medal of Honor( Very, very impressed with Beta!!) on Oct 12th I have Kane and Lynch 2 and Mafia 2 to tie me over!!

Don't care about this. MoH comes in two months or so, this is brag time for them. Just wait when they decide to make CoD games with monthly fees and maps for 15, then we will know how many morons are gonna be on this world.

I am still baffled how MW2 could be selling SO WELL and continues to be #1 on the XBL most played charts for so long! The game was a huge disappointment, almost a mocker to the series, and yet here it is.

I didn't even buy any of the map packs and neither did my friends. Now Actvision will start putting $15-$20 price tags on map packs with 3-4 maps and it will sell well. I give a BIG THANKS to all the sheep who showed Activision we are willing to spend $30 on 6 new maps for a poor game.

Never bought the map packs. I liked the MW2 multiplayer alot but not that much. They say they aren't going to charge for the Black Ops mutliplayer. Why would they have to when people pay way too much for way too little?

Apparently 20 million people found the maps to be worth the price. I really don't think this is going to change the price of all DLC like so many seem to think. MW2 is a hugely popular game so people can find value in a $15 map pack but with a less popular game people aren't going to spend that money. I don't think many people would drop $15 for Haze map pack. That is the reason not all DLC will be overpriced.

I knew this would happen; for every 2 people that said they were gonna not buy the map packs, 15 other people did and didn't care how much they had to pay for them (and if they did care, like me, even then still bought them but complained about the maps therein). MW2 is still bringing the dough in for Activision. I don't see that stopping 5 years from now.
