Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection

You know what summer makes me think of: Pinball. Yeah, I know, it's a dead gaming genre, and maybe for good reason, but pinball is still awesome as hell.

Video game pinball, not so much. Even a perfect simulation isn't going to really be able to capture the fun of some real silverball. First off, there are no big, round flipper buttons. Secondly, without the physical table there, you can't really nudge the ball where you want it to go... without tilting, of course.

Pinball rules. Specifically, Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Getaway. Look for these machines, and then curse when you find one at some rinky boardwalk arcade and realize it hasn't been properly maintained.

Found a fun one. Atari's pinball game Hercules was made in 1979. Had to actually shove the plunger forward to lauch into the game. Not only because it was 31 years old, but because it's played with a *cue ball* from a pool table! It's about 4 times a large as a regular table and ungodly funny to play with having to really whack the flipper buttons and watch this ball lumber it's way around the playfield.

Anyone in Houston: tonight (and every first and last Friday of the month) this place called Joystix opens up their showroom for free play from 9 PM Friday to 2 AM Saturday. They have my favorite pinball of all time: Medieval Madness. If I were to purchase and maintain a pinball, it would be MM.

I simply love pinball tables though I don't own any. I do have the Williams collection for my 360...and ZEN pinball is fun on PSN....but I own a custom made arcade cabinet that connects to a 42 inch HDtv with a built in MAME board that holds over 1,000 video pinball games...some of the best ones are the Future pinball games because you can adjust the board to move with the ball or different views a la the Williams collection....and they put buttons on the side of my arcade cabinet to make playing these pinball games even more realistic!! Its actually a blast to play.....I mean pinball machines are just too big and bulky to own more than one.

And I believe that's a picture of the TAXI pinball machine...correct Stephen?!

    @ TKEmysterio :

That's actually a good idea, but there probably just isn't enough of a market to produce them.

I am right there with you Stephen. I hve always loved Pinball machines. When my friends would be playing Super Mario Brothers or Kung Fu at the skating rink arcade where I grew up, I'd be playing one of the pinball machines. I believe it was my father who first got me into them, but they just have a charm and excitement that you either get, or you don't.

Some of my favorite tables over the years have been(in no particular order):
    1. Elvira & the Part Monsters
    2. Laser War
    3. The Simpsons
    4. The Who's "Tommy Pinball Wizard'
    5. Terminator 2
    6. Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventures
    7. The Addams Family
    8. Back To The Future
    9. Star Trek the Next Generation
    10. Batman (1st Tim Burton Batman movie version)

There are some decent simulations out there. My favorite video game was one on the Sega Genesis Dragon's Fury. It was the perfect balance of pinball and video game elements.

Agreed on those tables. Other classics are Funhouse, Theater of Magic, and Fish Tales. Most tables from Williams or Bally are excellent.

Mmmm pinball... I've probabably dropped more coin into some of these than I have Galaga (and that's no small feat haha). Why oh why is are there no more decent arcades (more specifically in the northwest indiana area). I don't own an XBox so their lil arcade means nothing to me. Besides, there's just something about going out to some shady arcade packed with smelly nerds and wasting untold amounts of money playing and replaying a game that I'm sure you could easily find a port (or clone) for on any console. lols

I wonder why no ones come out with a pinball controller yet? You could even have an insert for the wiimote which can recognize tilt. Have a couple flipper buttons on the side.
