According to a report by FirstShowing.net, the conventionally-held wisdom that The Riddler would be the villain in the upcoming third installment of the Batman series (still tentatively titled Batman 3,) are indeed true. According to a "reliable inside source" a Warner Bros. casting grid has listed the character for inclusion in Christopher Nolan's next visit to Gotham. Additionally, listed in that same grid to portray The Riddler, is Nolan's Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. However, the report seems to indicate that this news more so confirms the inclusion of the Riddler, than the idea of Levitt being cast for the role.
So, who do you think should play Batman's query-throwing, lime-green-loving nemesis?
As FirstShowing elaborates on Levitt's possible involvement, an actor's name appearing on the casting grid is not any kind of indicator of him being cast, adding:
"We're also cautious because the age range listed for the character is 35 to 45, and with Gordon-Levitt being 29 years old falls a little short of the mark. Of course, this wouldn't really be a reason for him to be excluded as characters can be modified in the script to accommodate a favored actor."
The role, therefore, is still essentially open, which makes me glad, because I think casting Levitt as Riddler would be a mistake. He seems to come from that same crop of young actors that gave us previous villains like Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow and even Heath Ledger's Joker. While they put in great performances, it would just seem to be cloning the process to cast Levitt as another "hipster-esque" type villain. When you also take into account that The Riddler, much like the The Joker, is a villain that uses psychological tactics to get under Batman's skin, you can see how even an actor of Levitt's caliber may come across flat in the wake of the late Heath Ledger's legendary performance as a similar character. There would likely be a lot of "been there, done that" if he were to be the new Riddler.
My Suggestion: The way to distinguish this version of Riddler is by going older. In the past, I've made the suggestion of Lost's Michael Emerson, and I am absolutely sticking to my guns on that one. He's so perfect for the role, it's ridiculous. Besides being older, this Riddler needs to carry the aura of an awkward introvert that hides a sadistic genius. This has to be an unassuming, deceptively meek-looking man who will test Batman in an intellectual way and is indeed, for all intents and purposes, smarter than him. Of course, like with all "genius" villains, his failing would ultimately be his own narcissism, and that will always be Batman's opening. I could also come up with other qualified names like Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, or even possibly Crispin Glover, but Michael Emerson needs to be our new Riddler. I can only hope that Christopher Nolan realizes that before he makes a flavor-of-the-moth casting of Levitt, who is hot off his performance in Inception.
**Steps off the soapbox**
Okay, it's your turn, now. Who do you think should carry on the legacy of Frank Gorshin, Jim Carrey, and....Nik Kershaw? (Okay, that wasn't him as Riddler, but it was an excuse to drop the reference.)

Personally, I'd like to see a villain other than The Riddler. Batman has enough enemies to make a few dozen movies. One of the things I really liked about 'Begins' was that it featured two villains that have never been on screen before (with the exception of the animated series). The Ventriloquist, Hush, Deadshot, etc. I think they'd translate well on screen. Even The Mad Hatter.

can you say Johnny Depp???

I'm so sick of Depp, he is highly over paid. Did anyone that saw the new Alice in Wonderland notice how similar the voice he did for Hatter and Jack Sparrow were? I'm just so sick of the guy, he needs to stay away for batman for sure

I think they actually shouldn't cast a "big name" actor like Johnny Depp. Keep in mind that many people were rather surprised by casting Heath Ledger as the Joker and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. If a major actor was cast as the Riddler (e.g., Depp, Carrey, etc.) it would be too similar to the prior Batman movies which had big-name stars. I'd much rather have a good actor (although lesser known) who does a great job in the role - just like Bale, Ledger, and the dude who played Scarecrow.

i'm going to trust the casting with Gordon-Levitt.
Afterall many people didn't want to see Heath Ledger play the joker. Many said there were far better choices for that role. Now we have a joker that will never be topped.
WildfireFox
I'm going to go off in a completely different direction. Jensen Ackles.
Might be a bit brawny, true. But... very underrated actor and I think he would manage to bring something completely different than what everyone's expecting.

Well, whoever they cast for the role, he will never outperform Jim Carrey's perfect portrayal of the greatest of Batman's foes. Sure, Heath Ledger got lucky and eked out a performance somewhat comparable to Jack Nicholson's performance, but no one will ever dethrone Jim Carrey's performance as the best in DC villain history.

I'd say Johnny Depp, but he's probably too busy making bad Tim Burton movies. That said, how about Edward Norton? He has nothing to do now.

take back about Neil Patrick Harris and say Michael C Hall (Dexter) make a great darker version of Riddler. Not the comical version on previous movies and shows
blackdisney
Neil Patrick Harris aka Dougie Houser should play Riddler.. he has the attitude he can pull it off great.

What about robin williams? He's got the chops for crazy and scary calm that the riddler would need. He's also old and could give a harsh look that the Dark Knight established with its main bad guy. Besides, riddles and trickery are generally tools of older people anyways. I'm sure he has it in him.

What would guys think of crispin glover as the riddler. I mean he was great in that rat movie and was pretty good in charlies angels

I say go with Gordon-Levitt. His physical build is right and his face is good for The Riddler. His physical acting skill is good, he can handle learning to hold the right posture, walk a certain way, twirl the cane, etcetera. He has good character acting skills, he knows how to "become the character"; think, act, talk, and express himself (facial, hand gestures) like the character. And he proved in Inception that he can wrap his head around abstract concepts, his character really seemed like he actually belongs in that world and does that for a living. And his stunts in the action sequences. A very convincing performance. The truth is, there just aren't many true character actors 35-45. There was a drought for awhile of actors learning the trade due to a slump in popularity of character acting. Now that it's back in vogue they are all older or younger. Maybe someone like Robert Downey Jr. or Jude Law who switched gears and moved to character acting recently.

jim carey.he was the only bright spot in the first batman films after michael keaton was done.if not him then johnny depp or (just throwing him out there)hugh laurie.all would be a good choice.
DigitalLyncher
michael emerson hands down!
Skellin
What about Jackie Earle Haley? anyone? other than that I'd agree with Jim carrey or Levitt.
chizzace
Guy Pearce. Momento. Easy fit.

Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good choice. I def think he could pull it off. However, after watching Inception, and watching Tom Hardy in Bronson recently, I think Hardy may be the better choice. All of your suggestions are very good, but I think Hardy is the guy. He has proven he can do a crazy character.
The Emperor's Champion
I could see JGL, Adrien Brody, Emerson, Jeffrey Donovan, or David Tennant as the Riddler. Most of the rest of the suggestions are just wrong.
