Industry Analyst Suggests Call of Duty Multiplayer Should Be Pay-To-Play

The "Things That Used To Be Free Aren't Free Anymore" trend in gaming seems to be growing, much to the dismay of non-thousandaire gamers everywhere. For example, industry analyst Michael Pachter is urging Activision to step up and make the first move towards monetizing multiplayer services offered by Triple-A titles.

From an article today on MCV, Pachter says:

"We think that it is incumbent upon Activision – with the most popular multiplayer game – to take the first step to address monetization of multiplayer. It is too early to tell whether that will be a monthly subscription, tournament entry fees, micro-transaction fees, or a combination of all three, but we expect to see the company take some action by year-end, when Call of Duty: Black Ops releases."

Oh! Thank you for giving them so many options they can use to nickel and dime us, Michael!

Pachter also said that all the time gamers spend playing the same game over and over again online takes away from the time they could be playing other games, thus, not as many units are being sold and to make up for it, multiplayer should be pay-to-play.

Think this sounds like a bad idea? Would you be mad if Activision suddenly made something that used to be free a paid service?

Why in the hell would you guys do this? So you guys don't make enough money??? Mw2 made 1 BILLION dollars. I repeat 1 BILLION dollars. If thats not enough money for you then i don't know what is. If you guys do end up doing this than your multiplayer better be pretty damn sweet.

In my opinion, with the cost of internet service, plus the cost of xbox live for those who have a 360, we already pay to play. This is just my opinion of course, but as to the question, I will boycott further CoD titles, or any other titles, which charge to play online. FFS, look at how much money game publishers are already making, they do not need more. Greed, thats all it is, even those who have it all, still don't think they have enough. Its enough to make me wanna quit gaming.

in my opinion if ANY online game for Xbox, PS3, or PC, that is not a mmorpg; goes Pay to Play then they will loose ALOT of money, customers, and the chance of their next game selling. this is a horribly idea

Patcher is a douche bag! If I want to play ONE game all the time, it's my choice and no one will stop me or obligate me to buy other games. I play what I want. how could he ever suggest pay for play for somthing that is FREE and supposed to be free. Now we will pay for XBL plus to play games online? F that.

I have two feelings on this as a gamer myself it is already hard to buy every map that comes out. So adding a tax on something that we have already had is not cool. If any game company wants to do this they need to add more content or streamline their product to soften the blow of spending money. As much as I like md2 I would think twice to pay 1200mp to here 12 year olds cuse. Also game developers need to remember that as a whole we gamers support there business. It is in their best interest to keep us on their good side not put a 20 dollor wall between us and them.

G4 community I say at a time like this, if Activision wants to charge us for multiplayer I say us as a community shouldn't buy and let the force of all gamers be unleashed upon Activision, or until Activision realizes that making us pay extra isn't going to fly with us as gamers, BRING IT ON ACTIVISION!

Seriously the way things are going for the Call Of Duty series and the money hungry company Activision I wont be surprised if this blows up in their faces, but I don't think I'll be getting into Call Of Duty anymore. Call Of Duty 4 was the best and it started going down hill from there, but what are you goiing to do, they are a comapny, a corporation and they'll squeeze out all the money they can before it becomes unpopular then they'll move on to another game. I mean, look what happened to the movie industy with 3D. It is because of this that I move from Call Of Duty back to Halo and Battlefield because I don't want to pay a sum of money to have fun with my friends. I already have to put up with paying for Xbox Live Gold, which I don't mind, but this is pushing the envelope.

So in short, "F You" Activision its been a great run.

Boycott! lol I sort of agree that some people play only Call of Duty and are missing out on other great games. But I'm not for this pay-to-play multiplayer. Gamers struggle enough financially as it is...or is that just me?
