It seems that Ghost Rider will once again leave behind flaming tracks and fetal-positioned, shivering, mind-raped criminals on the big screen. On The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Nicolas Cage revealed, in no ambiguous terms, that the long-discussed sequel entitled Ghost Rider: Spirits of Vengeance is a go. He also confirmed that taking the helm of film, will be directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, whose work you may have seen in Gamer, and the two Crank films. The confirmation of this creative team has also reignited rumors that this sequel will take a darker, more action-oriented turn than its 2007 predecessor, possibly even marketing it as an R-rated film.
As Cage commented to Ferguson:
"I actually liked the movie (Ghost Rider) quite a bit myself. I tell you something, we're gonna go for two. There is going to be a new one. I just made the deal."
While the first film was a solid effort, it seemed to fixate too long on Johnny Blaze's personal life and scarred past. Since the action wasn't anything particularly exceptional, it didn't exactly make the film memorable. Nevaldine and Taylor have clearly been brought on board to pick up the pace and leave the franchise with some intense landmarks. In the interview, Cage referred to them as "wonderful directors" and "fantastic."
So, there you have it. We are officially getting the sequel that, apparently -- somebody wanted. While I can't imagine that this would be something that people would jump completely on board for like the Iron Man films, it actually does have a lot of potential with a new vision. While a rumored R-rated effort may spark some interest, darkness and ultraviolence didn't exactly help the last two Punisher movies. Plus, I seriously doubt that a direct sequel to a PG-13 comic book franchise would be released as R. If anything, it would be the other way around.
Does the news of a Ghost Rider sequel excite you enough to get on your hog at night, light your face on fire, and whip criminals with a chain? I'm sure it does for someone out there.
