Discussion: Does The Avengers Need Edward Norton?

As word broke over the weekend about the creative relationship between Edward Norton and Marvel Films getting curb-stomped, it seemed that 2012's crossover extravaganza The Avengers had taken a hit in its loss of the Bruce Banner/Hulk that we had been set up to see in the film. The working history between Norton and Marvel had been legendarily contentious right from the 2008 release of The Incredible Hulk and has been a series of dramatic back-and-forth stories illustrating a supposedly difficult Norton versus a low-balling, intrusive Marvel. That, however, is unimportant and not worth exploring, as the deed is already done. What we're now left with, is an important question: Does The Avengers need Edward Norton?

While we may never know the full story behind Marvel's axing of Norton, it was clear that with ambitious plans and a cast that's already full of huge names, Marvel may not have been willing to pay top dollar for his return in The Avengers. Norton himself seemed to be on the fence at any given time, from expressing an unwillingness to return to recently asking the fan community if they wanted him to return. It also could be that the scope of the role did not warrant what Norton was asking. In fact, based on some speculation on the film's storyline, it would merely have been a cameo. While some rumors pointed to the film featuring Marvel's signature shape-shifting aliens, Skrulls as the primary villains, it was also strongly believed that they would emulate the early Avengers comic storyline in which the team had to battle a rampaging Hulk, who was being controlled as a weapon by Thor's villainous half-brother Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston in the Thor movie and presumably returning for this film.)

The film would have benefited greatly from an appearance by Norton, which could have preserved some of the fledgling continuity in these new batch of Marvel-produced films. However, whether it was a matter of them not being able to work with Norton or simple financial reasons, his presence seemed to be a luxury they believed to be not worth its weight. The key word here, is "luxury." In a scenario with the "rampaging Hulk" storyline, the film may not even require the appearance of Hulk's Bruce Banner persona. In fact, they could easily get away with making it such that the Hulk would be stuck in his monstrous form without reverting back to Banner, as some of the comic's storylines have reflected in the past.

Therefore, in my opinion, given the choice, I would have preferred Norton's inclusion, but the film didn't necessarily "need" him. In fact, the way I see it, the bigger tragedy here is that a potential sequel to The Incredible Hulk has gone from "not very likely" to "NEVER." While it was hardly perfect, it did right most of the wrongs of the previous incarnation of 2003's slow and overly-dramatic Hulk and seemed to be a franchise that might have been worth getting behind. **sigh** Oh, well...

How do you feel about Edward Norton not returning as The Hulk? Does this diminish The Avengers? Or is it an opportunity to cast someone even better?

I believe the best person to play the Hulk would be Hulk Hogan. After all, Isn't that what earned him his name. You don't want to make him angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Yes! Why did Ed Norton get 2 hours of being Bruce Banner, get tied to the SS Serum AND Iron Man- then get dropped?

Why so much later, also? What broke down between Incredible Hulk and now? Regardless of statements, I think this move was done to save money, as was the issue with Terrence Howard. They can't afford The Avengers!

I think Ed Norton was alright acting wise for the hulk, he was better at the behind the scenes stuff knowing how to work the story. If Marvel would have let him have full range over The Incredible Hulk it probably would've been a better movie. They could find a better actor for the part, but Norton actually knew the character.

If I had to pick a Bruce Banner it would be Cillian Murphy, from Batman Begins, Sunshine, Red Eye, 28 Days Later, The Dark Knight. He and Chris Evans, Captain America, have already stared together in Sunshine.

I would like to have seen Norton take on the role again, I thought he did a great job in the Incredible Hulk. It sucks that you will have everyone else playing roles they have already established, but have someone new playing Banner. The Hulk may be more important to the movie, but you wouldn't have him without Banner. Whoever they get is going to have a lot to live up to.

Norton Is my one of my fav actors along with robert downy i was really pissed to see the 2003 hulk and the new hulk was way better. Spiderman 1-2, Xmen, IronMan, Nortons Hulk, i was finally ok with superhero movies but the Avengers movie is sounding more and more like crap The casting are horriable give the fans what we what not who will sign cheaper.

I think The Avengers would benefit from Norton's role as he is a great actor and he would be keeping his role as he was in the Hulk, but there are definitely better actors out there.

In my opinion this will not have as anywhere near as great an impact as say, RDJ getting dropped from iron man (knock on wood... no i mean it.... right now.... if you have to get up and go find a tree!) but this will still feel the sting of the "Slip". Remember the batman transitions from years back... how there was this competition who could pee in the acting pool the fastest and see who came screaming up out of THAT little game of Marco polo. We can now say we have governor now who is ACTUALLY a batman villain.

Give the Job to Nathan Fillion for pete sake. He fits the profile, slides easily between the body types to round out the Bana/Norton Slip, and most importantly he's freaking nerdy enough it wouldn't just be a paycheck to him. He wouldn't add his own spin to it, he would be terrified of showing his face at a convention if he messed it up.

SO to recap.. Fillion for Hulk, Mr. Freeze for president..... and Lou Farigno, your Blue Chevy is double-parked out front.

I thought Norton did a good job as Banner. But on that note, I thought Bana did a good job as well. Thing is, it doesn't really matter who's portraying Banner, people are paying to see the Hulk.

Now, as far as continuity goes, it would be nice to see Norton reprise the role. Honestly speaking though, it's not like they're switching out Sean Connery for George Lazenby (Bond reference for those who don't know). In other words, and no disrespect to Norton, but it's not as though he brought something to the role that would make people say that he had the 'greatest Bruce Banner portrayal of all time.'

I think audiences these days are okay with actors getting 'switched out.' In fact, I'd say that we're sort of getting used to it.

marvel didn't make the spider-man movies. columbia pictures bought the rights to make it. which obviously made the films suck. marvel did independently make incredible hulk and the iron man movies. but, back to the topic. NORTON NEEDS TO STAY!!!

Marvel HAS TO cast an actor and stay with him. Incredible hulk wasnt a perfect movie but was good enough for marvel to keep norton as hulk for a long time and now because of a few arguements we are probably going to have a new hulk. I would rather have the skrull storyline in the avengers instead of a hulk storyline but i still think they should have stuck with Norton as the hulk. Now we're going to see a new spider man and a new hulk:( (even though i like the idea of a spider man reboot)

Is it seriously reasonable to go through two actors per difficult to cast marvel character? We are now looking at having a new Spider-Man, new Hulk, a new Fantastic Four(if memory serves), and instead of a proper X-Men sequel we're getting a pre-quel because they decided to kill Professor X. What the hell happened to dealing with decisions made?

It seems to me that the movies are now subject to the endless retcons that comic books now experience. Where is the gravitas if every dead character comes back or if the original character takes back the mantle every single time? Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Magneto, Punisher, Professor X, Domino, Venom, Robin, and dozens more members of both DC and Marvel Universe have died, been replaced then arbitrarily experience a retcon that will keep asthmatic obsessive and small minded fanboys happy. So, now we can retcon the chosen actor for The Incredible Hulk twice in a row. What-the-hell-ever Marvel, if you refuse to let an incredibly well established and proven actor make some decisions and think that it isn't going to impact ticket and dvd/blu-ray sales then you are bound to sink your new found success in cinema. Do whatever you want, what is the worst that could happen? It's not like you're going to sell out to Disney.........

just a little jaded rant that has been pent up for a bit, its total bull that they are really doing this and this actor replacement thing is going to swing back around and hit them in the face

quit reinventing series and dropping them...tie them all together and have the largest Comic "universe" cross movie world. and watch it print money, quit giving them the 1.2. treatment. just because Spider-Man did so well doesn't mean ALL superhero movies are going to be great. Commit or drop it.

the movie needs Norton... there won't be any Avengers if Hulk isn't there to complete it... that's a big essence off the movie and the team... bad move by Marvel... hold that thought... another bad move...

Well I still see the Avengers? Probably. Will I miss Ed Norton and find it weird to have a different actor playing the Hulk(if the Hulk does appear in it or in any sequels)...yes. A lot.

Ed Norton is a great actor, and I respect him for that, he's never made a sequel, so I find it odd he'd make the Avengers(probably why he asked fans), and I like how he knows where a character should end in a movie. He's very creative and comes up with a lot of good changes in a movie. When I first heard he was in the new Hulk, i thought..."well guess they'll recast it for the sequel." But, i am saddened to hear about this.
