It's taken a little longer than usual for the NPD Group to deliver the sales data for May, but the numbers aren't too surprising. Both Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2, expected to be the leaders for the software side in May, sold very well. May's question mark was Alan Wake.
Note: NPD no longer release sales numbers for the whole top ten, only the top five.
Video Game Software Sales, May 2010:
- 360 -- Red Dead Redemption, Take-Two Interactive, 945,900
- PS3 -- Red Dead Redemption, Take-Two Interactive, 567,100
- Wii -- Super Mario Galaxy 2, Nintendo of America, 563,900

Video Game Hardware Sales, May 2010:
- Nintendo DS -- 383,700
- Wii -- 334,800 Xbox
- 360 -- 194,600
- PlayStation 3 -- 154,500
- PSP -- 59,400
Poor Alan Wake. It seems like gamers put their money on Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2 (not bad choices, mind you), while Remedy's long-in-the-making horror adventure struck a niche audience. Perhaps Alan Wake can keep the dream alive through fans excited to learn more through the series of downloadable add-ons scheduled to expand the game universe.
"The portable hardware category contributed the most to the decline in hardware sales for the month, yet the NDS is the best-selling hardware system for May," said NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier in prepared comments with the numbers. "Console hardware unit sales are, in fact, flat to last year. Declines in sales result from a lower average selling price this year compared to last."
Without a premiere video game for the industry to rally around in June, the video game industry could be in for a rough summer. Transformers: War for Cybertron, do you have the power within?

Alan Wake should've been in UFC's spot, while SoulSILver should've been in SMG2's spot.

wow u guys really messed up on this one. RDR is owned by rockstar not 2k games, i ps3 is not a 360 its much better mr. ufc npd, and skate isnt owned by microsoft. guess your interns were to busy playing mw2 and watching cops

I mentioned last month that Remedy must be crapping their pants when they heard Red Dead was out at the same day. It looks like Alan Wake didn't do as well, not just because of RDR but with Super Mario Galaxy 2 out on the same month. Who would have thought that the UFC games would beat Alan Wake!
Anyway, I hope AW achieved enough sales so a sequel can be green lit, as we need some questions answered! Yes, there are DLCs on the way but probably won't answer most of the mysteries.

I bought Super mario Galaxy 2 on June 4 so I'm not in those numbers but I'm very glad Red Dead Redemption didn't cloud it from selling well. June should continue to be a bright spot for both games.

I don't know why everyone hates on the PS3. I have both and whie I play the 360more, there are some games on the PS3 that are must play. God of War 3, Heavy Rain, LBP and MGS4 are all great. But I will say if a game comes out on both consoles, I will almost always buy the 360 version, unless sony is the holder of the exclusive content first, which almost never happens.

This is a really good sales chart, SMG2 is in a really good place even though it came out the last week of May, and games that were released months ago are still selling well like NSMBW(what about COD modern Warfare 2?)

Alan Wake flopped hard. This just proves that Xbox owners only buys shooters. God of War III is still the highest selling HD exclusive this year. Next Xbox flop: Crackdown 2.

who cares . i never bought mario galaxy 2 and red dead is good on whatever sytem u play it on,and the only reason the 360 version sold more than ps3 is because the 360 is cheaper than ps3 and more people own them so of course the 360 version sold more ,heck i was one of those customers and i also played it on my brothers ps3 and i cant tell a difference between the 2, g4 why do you post useless info such as this. you know the trolls always comeout over crap like this no matter which console has the highest game sells. g4 please quit feeding the trolls please .

The only way gamers are going to buy a psp is to sell the device at $50. But even that may not work, DS is the king of handheld gaming and i phones and other phone devices are second.

Once again it shows xbox gamers are keeping the Industry Alive by buying all the games! And wasn't this the year of the PS3? Seems like the 360 is still the consumer favorite! And now w/ the 360 slim it's all over man. EA is going to come back to 360 and say we are soooo sorry!

Much of this is predictable, RDR is multiplat and from a respectable company so it sells the most.
