You don't hear many complaints when Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto brings out a new Mario or Zelda game, but when Miyamoto decides to introduce something completely new, you really get people paying attention. Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun attended Nintendo's recent shareholders meeting, where Miyamoto apparently expressed interest in a new character.
Andriasang translated the newspaper's report on Miyamoto's comments.
"It's about time for a new game character," he said. "Perhaps this can be delivered next year."
The last time Miyamoto introduced a new character for Nintendo's core audience, we got Pikmin (and we're still waiting on Pikmin 3!). In the meantime, he's brought Miis, Nintendogs and other "characters" targeted for larger audiences. Which one will Miyamoto bring to the table this time?

Hello fellow game nerds,
Please take a look at my Shigeru Miyamoto fan-art at my etsy store. He has raccoon ears!

Hmm, sounds interesting! Can't wait to see what he comes up with in terms of a new game (or new game series).
I wonder if the new character can be a girl...? That would be cool, but I'll be satisfied with anything, really.

I think they are going to go RPG with this character, as much as I hate to say it.

i want this character TOTALLY new! no spin offs from Zelda, Mario, Starfox, or Pikmin. I WANT BRAND NEW!

Kind if funny how this comes a week or two after they announce new Kerby and Donkey Kong games.

How about a new female? Preferably one that kicks ass. Samus is cool, but she need not be the only one.
What I DON'T want is another Jr character like Mario Jr. I still haven't gotten over the creation of Bowser Jr.

I hope this means we get a new kick-ass IP from Nintendo. But then again, it's not like Miyamoto's the only guy at Nintendo who can make a great gaming franchise. Kirby was the brain-child of Masahiro Sakurai, remember? Plus, Hotel Dusk was pretty cool. :)

they really hesitate to make a new IP

Please be better than Waluigi! Captain Olimar is l33t!

I'd like a new character yes, but a fresh take on the old franchises would be a good idea. Co-op in Super Mario Bros. for Wii was a good start, but something I would like to see would be a (I'm not joking here) Pokemon MMO. Think about it, run around fighting other Pokemon in a huge world map and and fighting/teaming up with fellow trainers (players). C'mon, that sounds just plain fun!
But yeah, a new character works too. Now what genre of gaming would this character be in, I wonder?

I've kinda come to assume that all I'm getting from Nintendo is old characters that bank on nostalgia, and I'm perfectly fine with that, so this doesn't interest me that much. We'll see what comes of it. Hopefully its better than Waluigi.

While I eagerly look forward to a new Miyamoto creation, I'm curious how well it will be received by American audiences. Nintendo has tried bringing some popular Japanese characters such as Starfy and Chibi-Robo over to our shores, with only mediocre to poor results.

That's good, I got tired of Mario 15 years ago.

They are finally thinking about making a new character. They've only been using the same cast for the better part of 20 years.
BONERJAM
Hopefully its a good character because I could really careless about Pikmin and the Miis.
@ontegrass
I would hope that most people know that one.

Actually Nintendo is the one company that I would not expect a "Poochy" from. Disney on the other hand seems to have invented the live action "Poochy" with these celebutantes and teen rock groups that they crank out.
Rare seemed like the ones who would make a "Poochy" type character but they are not with nintendo any more. . . oh wait. . . . they made Conker. . .

Sweet meat, sounds good to me as long as they dont pull a "poochie" on us. Although I'll be the first to admit, "Super Poochie Galaxy" would be effing amazing.
BTW, if u don't get the reference I'm either too old or your not cool enough... prolly the latter.

Nintendo has a nice balance, in my opinion, of classic and innovative. The old guard of Mario, Link, DK, and even Fox are balanced by Pikmin, Battalion Wars, and even new additions to core franchises like Midna and the new Pokemons
I don't think the casual garbage (any game with the word "wii" but not the word "mario" in the title) deserves to be discussed in the same article as the real nintendo characters. The Nintendo avatars (or whatever they call them) and the virtual pets are not what real gamers are looking for.
Nintendo feels like the USA network of gaming. . . Just as USA is using the "characters welcome" tagline to promote it's shows as being character driven and then creating fantastical crossover situations for those characters; so too is Nintendo realizing (at long last) that characters are what they do best and everything else, settings, plotlines, etc. should be designed around those characters. I don't think any other game company has accomplished anything on the same scale as Nintendo with regard to character driven games (Sega came close with Sonic but that was one series, Sony came close with Ratchet, Jak, and Sly but seems to be moving away from that trend).
