Lara Croft going from Eidos to Square Enix in May 2009

According to Eurogamer, Crystal Dynamics is planning to release a Tomb Raider game during the Christmas buying-things period of 2011.

"Wait, I thought there already was a Tomb Raider game coming this summer," you may be saying. Kind of. There is a Lara Croft game, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, coming this summer (see our preview here), but that's not a full Tomb Raider title. The game we're talking about is not a downloadable title, but a full entry into the Lara Croft saga.

According to Eurogamer, the game's subtitle may be Downfall, and it will be released for multiple platforms including PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Plotwise, it's a bit of a reboot, starring a young inexperienced Croft exploring islands off the coast of Japan. So we may get to see the origin of the dual-pistols!

This is all rumor-y right now, but the Predicto-tron 8000, G4's rumor-computer, has calculated that there is a 93 percent chance that this is actually true. More info will be provided when we get it.

I love both the Tomb Raider games and Uncharted. I have played all of them. I would say the original Tomb raider games were the best. My favorite was the first one along with The last Revelation , where she was in Egypt. When Tomb Raider got a remake by Crystal I thought it was cool at first, but then the game play felt redundant by the time I got to the last one they released, not impressed at all with the story or the gun fights of the last one.

When I first started playing Uncharted, I felt it was for the most part a complete rip off of Tomb Raider. When I am saying this I am referring to the remake of Tomb Raider with Crystal. How Nate jumped and grabbed ledges, etc. Tomb Raider with Crystal was also released before Uncharted. All in all, I do love Uncharted and can t wait for the 3rd one to come out.

I just hope this new Tomb Raider game goes towards the original games that actually made you think of the puzzles. The new ones are not challenging at all, everything is out in the open and there isn t any thinking required. This is coming from a person who actually played all of the games to the end without looking at a walkthrough or hints.

I too liked the swimming aspect of Tomb Raider, which Uncharted majorly lacks in. Uncharted does an awesome job with fighting, such as fist fighting and guns, which is an issue that Tomb Raider lacks in. The graphics and cinematography are lacking in Uncharted and are a lot better in Tomb Raider (I am also talking about resolution quality). Probably one of the best games for resolution is Heavenly Sword, also one of the few games released in 1080P.

All in all, both Uncharted and Tomb Raider are great games. If the producers actually shared and combined their knowledge and ideas, they could actually release a superior game.

I think they need to just put Lara out of her misery and pass the torch to Uncharted. It's everything Tomb Raider wanted to be, and more.

I had seen 1...and played 2 and 4...always loved the concept...but the gameplay never reached that sweet spot IMO...

the movie then nixed my joy for the concept...

then tomb raider legend...far from perfect...but certainly felt like they were finally inching closer to said aforementioned sweet spot...plus introduced an interesting support team....cliffhanger ending? Not a fan...

then Tomb Raider Anniversary...LOVED IT! Again...not perfect but still going in a good direction and setting up the "true" villain for a good return engagement....though the support team completely disappeared....one would have thought they'd have expanded on that...but nope...

then underworld...hated it....the doppelganger was unnecessary and blowing up the mansion and "killing" said support team felt like it was done for shock value...then teaming with one enemy to fight the other...only to be betrayed and teaming with the other enemy as a result...seriously? Plus it felt more like a step back gameplay wise....sure they wrapped up the story...but really wasn't worth the wait to see how it ended...then there's that DLC...

Between that and Angel of Darkness...you get the feeling that eidos dont want to be making tomb raider...but rather some supernatural psychic thriller...

I agree that Uncharted had more gunplay then what I'd like from the tomb raider series...though the fact that IT actually got both elements right while Tomb Raider's gunplay gets worse and worse...and the exploration gets more and more diluted...

with all the parkour games and whatnot that have saturated the market...Tomb Raider really needs to bring SOMETHING to the the table aside from a fun main character...it could be quality gun play....it could be smoother climbing....it could be new altogether....but as it is....staler than the air in said tombs being raided...

yeah the gameplay has evolved over the years...but so has the gameplay of every other game out there...

I still love the concept.....I still think they can indeed make another good tomb raider game....

The only good Tomb Raider games were the original and the anniversary remake. All the other ones suck. You can't compare Uncharted and Tomb Raider. They have similarities due to Uncharted using the cliff climbing and stuff, but it was way to simplified when compared. It was there to make the game more interesting without causing to much of a problem for the gamer. I hope the new one is more like the old one. Lots of exploring and discovering with scant gun fights. I think the first TR held me in more suspense than the first Resident Evil. Especially on the Egyptian levels. The enemies were few and far between, sometimes you could hear them, sometimes you couldn't. Good Times.

Tomb Raider needs to pull a Medal of Honor and up their game. You can't help but compare Tomb Raider to Uncharted. And Drake is a tough act to follow. No offense West Daniel... but the only way someone could pass on Uncharted is if you were blind and thumb-less.

I loved the Legacy of Kain games, I actually started the rumors that it was gonna be out on the Dreamcast, cause that's what Crystal Dynamics told me,but they obviously lied, yea,I'm hoping the whole series will return, not just one game. Those games had some of the best underwater environments EVER...and the world shifting thing was awesome.I would love to see more Soul Reaver and Blood Omen games....hail Raziel !!!

bring back swimming ! for some reason, other than Just Cause 2,games have been afraid of the whole water thing period, yea, you go into water and you die.I never knew that the new characters were so uneducated that they don't even know how to swim, and if you do get to swim,it's hardly ever under water.
games that I've expected to go under water when I bought the game ,but dissapointed me:Grand Theft Auto 4,Red Dead Redemption,Prince of Persia, etc.

I've played almost all of the Tomb Raider games and love the whole action/adventure/Indiana Jones-type of games. That said, it is indeed time to put Tomb Raider to rest. Uncharted is the king in this area and I find it highly, highly unlikely that any Tomb Raider game (no matter how well developed) will cause enough waves in the market to dethrone Uncharted. And at some point, a new series will come out and dethrone Uncharted as well...Enough with the reboots already!

I don't really care about Uncharted. It may be a good game, but honestly, I can pass on it.

What I would LOVE is for them to stop making Tomb Raider games and put out one last (and REALLY GOOD) Legacy of Kain game. I want a conclusion to that story at least if nothing else. They left a cliffhanger ending in Defiance that has haunted me for the some 8 years since it came out. In this day and current gen of technology and game design, I would hope they could overcome the mistakes they made previously and really bring the series back for one last worthy iteration.

After seeing what can be done with Uncharted 2, my days of paying for a second rate TR game is long over.

It's not enough to update some touches here and there, to get TR into a place where it's a must-have would take a complete overhaul. Just for starters the game would need better camera and controls, actual understandable plot that makes sense, and for the love of god fix those damn glitches! I don't believe we'll see it improved that much. They'll do the minimum and be happy it sells at a flat rate. Not good enough for me. But who knows, maybe I'll be surprised.

My first Tomb Raider game was Legend (though I was around when and aware of the games before it came out, just never played them), so I'm not as burnt out on it. They may not be the blockbuster calibre that Uncharted has become, but TR games are solid games, good for a rental or to purchase used. Good to hear a new one is coming out.

Sounds great, my only problem with the TR series as of late is the combat. If they can revamp it, I believe it will be as good as Uncharted.

They really think they can compete with Naughty Dog? No boobs in the world can do that my friend.

Awesome!! Looking forward to it! I think it's a good idea to go back and tell the story of how Lara Croft got started -- should be interesting. I know a lot of people are getting tired of this franchise, but I'm not. I still think the Tomb Raider franchise has a ton of potential. That said, Crystal Dynamics has a lot of work to do to improve the series: fix annoying (and recurring) glitches, improve cameras and controls, and introduce new, fresh ideas. The series has become kinda stale, but I don't think it's dead yet.

It's time to give up on Tomb Raider. Uncharted 2 is what Tomb Raider dreamed of being.
