I enjoyed playing through both Gears of War and Gears of War 2. Neither blew me away, but they were pretty enjoyable co-op experiences. I've heard from a number of folks who are looking forward to Gears of War 3 because they're hoping it'll capture more of Gears of War than Gears of War 2. That there was such a favorable differentiation between the two came as a surprise to me, but user Pwnproof reinforced what I've heard from others in a comment from earlier today:
"I loved the first game with all my heart, the second one not so much.....So maybe if this one can re-spark the greatness i got from the first one i might grab an arcade 360 (still have my old HDD) but it will have to be a really good game at lest enough to make me buy this system again. If not oh well but i shall see."
Are you with Pwnproof?

I liked Gears 1 a lot. It got me back into gaming. I love (and still love) the chainsaw. The chainsaw blood splatter is way better in Gears 1. I liked the campaign a lot. It had that nice action/horror blend, very suspenseful. Raam on insane was a serious headache. I didn't like Gears 1 multiplayer because it was laggy. I do appreciate how a good player can own an entire team of enemies in Gears 1 and the quicker pace of the online multiplayer. Gears 2 on the other hand had a Michael Bay feel to the campaign. I thought it was very entertaining. I liked the varied locations and build up of characters. The boss fights were kind of lame, but big. The new executions were awesome. The best part of Gears 2 was horde. The multiplayer was beyond laggy, so horde was all that was left. Gears 3 didn't have me excited at all. Then I saw the E3 demo and beast mode. The demo looked great, way better than I expected. I thought the lambent would be stupid, but so far it looks really fun. I'm excited for horde again also. I don't think that Epic will fix the lag, so don't expect to buy Gears 3 for competitive multiplayer. All in all, I think they sold me at E3. Should be a great 6 months - Reach, COD Black Ops, Medal of Honor, then Gears 3!!

Gears 1 had a great story, but felt like a really good independent horror flick. They did an amazing job at allowing each and every chapter explain more of that story, as well as introduce all the elements in the story to come. However, with Gears 2, it felt like more of a Hollywood Epic. Everything in that game was meant with the intention to be bigger. From landscape, to the violence, to the boss battles, and even with the new enemies. I'm a fan of both games, the first one for it's really dark and climax building approach. But I love the second one for it's over the top epic feel, where I felt like the characters was on the offense and bringing the fight to the enemy, instead of just trying to survive like in the first one. Both games had different tones, and I think they did an awesome job in showcasing that. Which means that I can't wait for this third installment, because since it's the last Gears, I can only assume that they will go out with a bang!! But I'm still hoping they'll give us a prequel game and release Pendulum Wars, so the fans can really get an idea of how all of this started.

I liked the first one better too, but i think the second one was differant enough not to have to pick one over the other. Horde was one of the best developments for drinking gamers ever, cant knock that.

i dont understand how you could like the first one but not the second... gow2 was so freaking epic and upgraded i really just dont get how you couldnt like it if you liked the first. i would take gears 2 over 1 anyday, if i had to choose. the larger scale MAKES the game better/harder. maybe you kids just suck a shooters. im not huge on story b.c lets face it the story in gears is real simple and to the point. if i want a story ill play bioshock or CoD, if iwant to saw some1 in half while being able to shoot mortars at huge hulking beasts... ill play gears. gears 2 did everything better. and thats not a knock on gear 1, gears 1 was love at first chainsaw (and their team doesnt FLICK their fans by overpricing mplayer content like some companies...)

All they need to do is fix the multi player. That is the only thing that makes me frustrated with the franchise. I love both games. Having to wait forever for a match, however, I don't love.

i dont know why people like 1 more. i played both and they are mirror images of eachother except 2 improved on the first one. better graphics, less glitches and team mates could revive you in single player without it being co op.

I think both games are great, but people have different opinions about both games. You have to look at the overall of both games to see what people liked about either the first or second Gears Of War games.Could it be the story, graphics, sounds, multipla yer, controls? You have to take in every account why some people like one game instead of the other.Others like myself like both games.Games are meant to be played, and if your not having fun, play something else!

The first Gears is one of my favorite games of all time. I have no fun when I play Gears 2 even when I'm winning. That should tell you a lot. You shouldn't ruin a great game with a terrible sequel.
Aerindel_Prime
The second game had a better story but only just.
Both games read like they where originally designed by fifteen year olds olds.

I'm not. I really enjoyed the original, but I personally felt the campaign in Gears 2 outdid its predecessor in almost every way. It remains one of my favourite campaigns this gen. Until this past E3 it had seemed to me that this was pretty much the standard line of thinking (that Gears 2 was the better game), but I've been reading and hearing a lot of love for the original since. Is it because of the poor attempt at drama and the problems with multiplayer?
Funnily enough, it seems most people I've asked myself have preferred the sequel - admittedly, that's not exactly case closed. :P
Still, I wonder if it's a case of the internet making a certain opinion feel more common than it actually is.
Either way, they're both pretty great games.

I feel Gears 2 surpassed the original in almsot everyway but the story. It's not that i hate 2's story i just didn't feel like it "flowed" the same way as in 1. Also it just had that "WOW" factor that blew everyone away, just like the first God of War (although I do hate the 2nd God of War, especially the fact that all of Kratos' memories on combat are apparently stored in his liver, and one stab to that is instant amnesia). The only other thing Gears 1 had over the 2nd is the fact that RAAM is a freak'n PIMP. I have high hopes for the 3rd, can't wait to turn meatshields into suicide bombers and the fact that the gears world has a post-apocalyptic theme to it, is always awesome. Just really hope they rap things up with a bang.....a really big one.

i happen to think gears 2 was better. more enemy variety, horde, dizzy, and no more kryll. the only thing that would have made gears 2 better would be berserkers.

I believe that when it comes to video games or any epic 3 part story for that matter the 1st in the series and the last in the series are the key, defining moments that are what make people truly love the series. The second in the series is always largely seen as a down grade from the first and last mainly because its only real purpose is to leap from the first into the last and simply bridge the two together. It's only supposed to lead up to the third to deliver an ending as epic and inspiring as the first in the series. Thats why in the second one there usually isn't any major defining moments other than the ending so that the 3rd may begin off of something epic that has taken place. Basically what im saying is that the 1st and 3rd are the defining moments while the second is just filler and setup for the 3rd to make the last in the series as epic as possible. If this is correct we can expect to see a Gears of War 3 that will probably combine the love and epicness for gears 1 with the ingenuity and controls of gears 2 with way better graphics and more epic, defining moments that will leave the players aw-struck. So im definetly getting Gears of War 3 and am deeply thrilled for its release.

gears of war 1 i strongly believe is better but I liked gears 2 as well. the multiplayer in gears 2 was what made me sell it as soon as i did.

Gears 1 was way better. The campaigns were both good but where they lost was when they made an update to the second games online play. They made the shotgun way different and you could not have the weapons you want on the maps. They made the hammerburst way to powerful and other than using hammerburst you can not really get kills unless you have a sniper or torquebow or team up and double or triple team someone. They tried to make a more team based online so much that they ruined it. They did make improvements with the executions, some of the new game modes, and made getting team mates easier but didn't do enough to make it better than the first one. I go back to play the first one rather than the second.

Gears of War 2 is way better. I don't see what people didn't like about it. The gameplay is essentially the same so it would have to boil down to the story. The story was longer, more epic, more character driven and had more variety?? How could those things be a problem??
Just seems like a case of people refusing to move on. I'm sure GOW1 fans will never be happy with anything but an exact replica of the first game. And if you didn't like GOW2 then why would you be hopeful for Gears3? All signs point to it continuing down the same path as Gears2. Its going to be even more epic. Still can't figure out why thats an issue.
Blaze77
Gears of War 2 was Waaaay better than the first one. I loved the first one but it was really just a preview. The campaign barely lasted six hours and it didn't have the polish or variety of GOW2. Other than that though they are the same game. There is not enough difference between them to say you hate one and love the other. I also don't see how people who hated gow2 are no hoping to recapture the spark with GOW3. Clearly GOW3 is moving in the same direction as 2. Its going to be even more epic, but I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that???
