This service is no different than how MMOs work today. I guess nobody realizes this. Correct me if Im wrong, but I believe there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 million ppl world wide that play MMOs. OnLive sounds like an amazing idea, but they are currently marketing to the wrong crowd. Ignoring the MMOs:

*Most ppl that play computer games take pride in their machines and have top of the line equipment. Why would they want someone running their game for them?

*Ppl that play consoles dont *need* and internet service to play their console games. As long as they have power to their home, they can play whenever they want (as opposed to games that run solely off the internet who are not only at the mercy of their ISPs, but also the OnLive, who both I assume need to have some sort of weekly maintenance). And before you go and tell me of the great PS3 scare of '10 and everyones PS3 shutting down, mine worked fine. I never plug it into the internet.

However, MMOs work totally different. OnLive would great for that crowd.

I'm a "founding member" (read: I signed up). I tried a demo and I'm happy with the experience. I love gaming on my computer, but my primary computer is a Mac Pro, so I have to switch to Windows if I want to game. This is terribly convenient for me. However, like everyone else, I'm not too keen on their prices. I can't bring myself to pay $60 for Splinter Cell: Conviction. They really have something with the game rentals, but again, $7 for a 5 day rental is also steep, especially since I generally take 2-3 weeks to finish most games. So about $30 for a game. That's what I would pay to buy the game!

Convenience = great. But I do not need to pay that much for it.

It's been said by many....and I shall say it as well..

why would I want to pay those prices...to "rent" a game when I can probably just wait a year and get it for roughly the same price and be able to keep it ?

The 3 years is also a bit of a "huh?"...I realize this is not always the case...but a lot of gamers I know (myself included shamefully) have the "play it until I beat it...play it again so I can get everything and or speed run....toss back into cabinet....revisit when the sequel buzz is at it's hottest...or to tide you over between major releases" mentality....so it'd be sitting there for a fair amount of time and then when you realize the time is up a rush to play again will hit...

Quick question to anyone who has the service: Can you play CURRENT GEN video games on your iPhone? (e.g. Assassin's Creed II, Batman Arkham Asylum) I might be willing to buy the service just for that feature.

Why on Earth would I pay $40 for what is essentially an extended rental of Assassin's Creed II? It's a nice idea that's chock full of epic fail.

online is like entering a race after it's been over...for 50 years i mean steam does this, xbox live does this, psn does this and guess what...you actually OWN what you paid full price for! this 'idea' should have stayed just that as anyone with fast internet will just buy from any of the companies i just listed on the sole fact that you own what you buy and not rent.

also they claim it's gaming with out a console...ok sure yeah it might be that but you cant play with people on a console now can you? so whats the point of "buying" aka renting a game for almost to is full price if you cant even use it to it's fullest? i hope this stupid thing flops as all i see is some people trying to rip of f the gaming community

i hope it fixes it's problems (read above) and does well. not only people with low power devices can play high quality games, but on demand is a nice feature as well. hopefully it becomes really popular and discourages companys like time warner on putting on bandwidth caps.

Uhh... if you can use this service without owning a console to play it on... how exactly are you supposed to play it??

I mean, don't you need a controller plugged into something that'll recognize what you're doing??

Oh yeah for the people who have been waiting to play crysis wars on it. They took it off the marketplace for unkown reasons.

I got into it and i can safely say i wouldn't pay for it. I was lucky enough to get a free year and 1 free game of my choice. The graphics might be awesome but i couldn't tell you if they were because of the video quality. If you're playing on a poor monitor it might look fine but if your playing on a 24" inch gaming monitor it's gonna look like crap. If you really want to see the quality of the video, and this is no exaggeration, go to youtube look up 720p gameplay of your favorite game and pretend like you're playing that is the quality of onlive. I have a 20 down 2 up connection with an 18ms ping to my nearest server and although there isn't much i can still feel lag. If you have played PC games in the past using a keyboard and mouse you will immediately notice the lag. The concept is great but the execution is poor.

@Nosce most people don't go out and build a gaming PC they usually go to dell or bestbuy. You can still have a good computer and not be able to play high quality games (graphical fidelity above peggle). These types of computers are called workhorses and they are the most common throughout middle class america.

2017 is where on-live should be it's far to early tho it's designed for the "us" only

Personally i wouldn't touch it. games are more enjoyable when achieved . what service they offer must be like "'steam" "xbox live" or "psn network". or it will crash, let's say on-live has crysis 2 on pimped out system running on fictional servers. would you play it on their platform or on another platform

This is a terrible idea and a terrible service. Owning video games is still a very important thing for most consumers. If you can't provide some sense of ownership to your customer then to what end are they giving you money? Especially since these prices are almost as high as and in some cases higher than buying a digital copy of these games off of Steam. The only people this could possibly have been a benefit to are people with slow computers, no consoles, but also a VERY FAST internet connection. Anyone else see the contradiction? Why would someone with a terrible computer have a VERY FAST internet connection?

Idiotic beyond reasoning. If G4 had any integrity, they would have been mocking this service from its inception. Subscription based media with no real ownership of content will always fail over alternatives in the end.

It launched? Seriously? I didn't hear a word about it. But it is smart the way the price it, its at a discount, but it doesn't last forever. To be honest the only type of games I would get this for are mmos. Since whether I own the game or use onlive, I need an internet connection.

I am currently using OnLive. First off, let me say that I have a very fast connection. I tested my internet speed and Ping and got A's across the board. I have a new Razor gaming mouse and an Asus G73JH gaming powerhouse.

I turned on OnLive and was introduced to laggy gameplay and blurry graphics. Some games have very bad lag probelms, like Just Cause 2. Others are a little better, like Fear 2. All of them have the same graphics problems. It looks like I am trying to play the games on a PS2 when it is supposed to be streaming at maxed settings in 720p.

Well, it is certainly not max settings, it is certainly not 720p, and it is certainly not looking better than the console version. I understand that it has only been out for a few days, and they have an entire year before my free membership runs out to impress me and fix the service. As of right now, it isn't very good.

I put Borderlands on my PS3 and then put it on OnLive. OnLive looked pretty blurry and it looked like they were running it at the lowest graphical settings. The PS3 version looked amazing by comparison. Anyone who knows what the PC version of Borderlands REALLY looks like will know that the true PC version blows the 360 and PS3 versions out of the water. So, OnLive is not doing something right here, and if they have any chance of competing with consoles they are going to have to give us max out settings at full 720p.
