Stephen Johnson played Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light at E3 last week, and went all philosophical on the nature of Lara Croft's career:
"Lara Croft is like an aging movie star; once the most recognizable, famous face in gaming, Croft has since sunk from blockbuster status to one disappointing outing after another, with each feeling like increasingly desperate attempts to recapture the glory she had in the first couple of Tomb Raider games. Meanwhile, newer, hipper adventurer-platformer games like Uncharted 2 take home the Game of the Year awards. So think of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light as a quality indie movie that showcases Croft's talents in new ways..."
Check out the entire E3 2010 Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light preview for a more in-depth look at this game. It's definitely one to watch.

I'm trying to pinpoint exactly what happened with the Tomb Raider series and why there is so much loss for the series. I think it stared after 3. They stood on focus way too much on either gameplay or story. And it falls far short in one of those aspects ever since. Gameplay and story structure has advanced so much that I believe Eidos couldn't keep up. In Revalation (I played it for Dreamcast.) It was buggy and because of the gameplay it was sometimes frustrating during combat. But the story was interesting especially with a conflicted enemy instead of a pure evil one. Chronicals had absoluteely no plot until the very end and because of that it was difficult figure out what you were supposed to do. Angel of darkness, while I really did enjoy it, was criically bashed specifically for bothe story and gameplay. Even I have to admit they tried there hardest on the graphics, I enjoyed the story although the ending was a little out of left field and had nothing to do with the beginning. I will admit the gameplay was god awful had major buggs and faults in the console versions. The small success wit th there first next Gen Tomb Raider (which name eludes me) had them attempt to recreate the first and call it "anniversary" which wasn't updated enough even for my loyalty but I did enjoy it as a standard tombraider game. And most recently "Underworld" was not very recognized by critics and I didn't play due to a financial drag I wasn't able to play it. I'm interested in what a non-Eidos studio will do with the franchise Because of my financial situation I will trust what the critics will say. My loyalty has been jaded although I will take it into great consideration.

Uncharted 1&2 are vastly superior to any Tomb Raider game and I used to be a big fan of Tomb Raider.

She might be aging, but I still prefer her style over the bad Gears of War style that Uncharted tries to emulate.
