The other day, James Bower, the president of Master Image 3D, stopped by our office to show off his company's cool tech. Basically, Master Image puts 3-dimensions in the palm of your hand, without the need for the silly glasses.
In looking at the Wooo phone that uses Master Image's tech, I immediately thought of Nintendo's 3DS. While no one will really know what's behind Nintendo's 3D handheld gaming system until their E3 announcement, if I had to guess, I imagine it will look something like Master Image's 3D enabled handheld phone/viewer.
"We're certainly excited by the Nintendo device that's coming out for 3D without glasses. We've seen it and we think it looks great. The technology is similar, and we think our technology can improve upon what's going on there," Bower says.
UPDATE: You can't see the 3D in this video because our cameras (and your monitor) aren't in 3D, but I've seen it, it works, and it's very cool.

What the hell. The vid should be all about the 3DS, not a phone with 3D.

My next cellular will be 3D enabled, I dont care about iphone 4

If I ever get to really see (in person) one of these I will be able to judge. We need to see displays in stores before we can be awed.

....Alright....so it's possible--but that doesn't mean that the content. in relation to 3D gaming--will be up to snuff. That's up to the developers, and for the quality to get there, they have to start using the 3D for something more than just gimmicky chainsaws coming up off the screen towards you.

LCD still sucks, LSD not so much

Great, another step closer to holograms and videos beamed into your head.

The technology used in these screens is called a parallax barrier (he calls it a cell matrix barrier), and it is fairly limited in viewing angles and viewing distance, which makes it not very suitable for 3D TVs. Glassless 3D TVs usually use a technology called a lenticular lens (which is similar to the little hologram squares that they sometimes put in the bottom of cereal boxes). Lenticular lenses allow many viewing angles and distances, but they are still not available for consumers, though they are used as advertising billboards.

Does this mean we can have 3D TVs without needing the glasses?

We've got a 50-inch tv with that at work, one of the other companies in our building creates and distributes them. It's a cool concept, but not as clean as say a head-tracking 3D unit is. It's probably a higher quality then the handhelds as there is a larger amount of space for 3D renders, but this thing doesn't seem great for consumer use. Hopefully the handhelds are able to fix some of these problems (have to be a certain distance or angle from the device)...otherwise, I'll be waiting until a better unit comes along.

If you film something that's 3-D with a 3-D camera, does that make it 9-D?
SteveKB
this will almost be like holograms sorta (cept it only works when looking at the screen from that angle)
it'll be so awesome to show friends this whether on the 3ds or whatever other tech comes with it :D

Which is pitch-speak for "Nintendo's 3D is cool, but trust us ours will be amazing! Oh yes truly amazing... really... honest... Amazing! Damn it, why'd they have to use the tech first?"

While the techie inside me agrees this is cool the other side of me just doesn't feel like he needs 3D in the palm of my hand. Movie theater or main console or PC gaming rig I could see.
Blue_Vortex
so basically this is what 3D television sets should have been, no need for glasses to get the effect
electrox3d
saw this in 2004 at CES

Let's remember the Nintendo (??) example. you could see the 3D in that video quite clearly. Look it up on YouTube. You can see it very well. I wonder why this guy had such a bad example that you couldn't even see?
DigitalGibs
not sure if that video was 3D but I didn't see a difference...
