The next iteration of the venerable Mortal Kombat series was announced by Warner Brothers this morning and promises a return to brutal form for the game series. To be released on the PlayStation 3 and 360 in 2011, Mortal Kombat is being developed by the newly re-named NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon.

The Fatality is back and will be "presented in more gory detail than ever before." In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and deep story mode. Players can choose from a lineup of the game’s iconic characters, and the usual 1 vs. 1 matches are back as well as several new game modes, including four-player “tag-team” fights, and two-player team ups in the new “Co-op Arcade Mode." You'll be able to compete against another team online too.
“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”
While it looks very impressive, a fighting game lives and dies on the precision of its controls and the delicate balance between characters, so we'll all have to wait a bit to see if the game lives up to the famous name of the series. I, for one, am very excited.

this is awesome!! they're making a remake of mortal kombat and a new movie about mortal kombat. and both of them are not skipping out on the gore. finally they decided to reboot this franchise. put mortal kombat rebirth on youtube to see the preview. its intense!!!

keep the create a fight. this looks good, but i didn't have a problem with the 3D versions of the game. i thought MKA, MKDA, and MKD where great.

Wow this just looks completely uninspiring.I just don't get why gamers wanna keep hopping on the nostalgia train.Granted the series probably works better in 2d.I was just wishing for something thats more realistic similar to the MK rebirth trailer thats been popping up on the web.I also remember Ed Boon saying he was gonna kill off more than half of the characters and add fresh new beginning with characters grounded in more reality.Well I guess if its what 30 somethings and 10yrolds wanting more of the same of the same.Sad thing is this will bring in money just like a bunch of stupid 80's toy inspired movies and bad remakes.

I can't wait. I want fatalities! Though, I never got used to how they were done in Deadly Alliance thru Armageddon. Maybe they will be a lot simpler this time around.

MK was a Broken franchise and after 3 never retained any glory. This seems like a attempt to capitalize on the Success of SF4.
