Daily Reacharound: Portal 2 Expectations

Such a headline inspires infinite sadness, but it's true: Portal 2 has been delayed until 2011. This explains why Valve decided to cancel their E3 press conference. I'll let Aperture Science explain.

Here's the release that Aperture Science (read: Valve) released to the media:

VALVE ANNOUNCES MAKING GAMES IS HARD

June 9, 2010 -- Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

"Also, the game will be even better," they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.

The final paragraph should put to rest any Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2: Episode 3 rumors, too.

Now if this delay is to allow Portal 2 to go to the PS3. then I accept it. If not

, WTF VALVE?!?!?! THE PS3 HAS A GREATER PROCESSING POWER THAN THE XBOX360, MORE USERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE INTERNET CAPABILITIES BECAUSE IT IS FREE ON THE PS3, AND NOT PROVIDING A PORT OF A GAME TO A CONSOLE BASED ON WHAT A PUBLISHING COMPANY DID IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!! HELL YOU ARE STILL USING EA FOR PORTAL 2 ON THE XBOX, SO WTF?!?!?!

Other than that, I'm OK with the delay.

I'm probably one of 2 people on the planet who didn't much care for the first one. Mainly cause I couldn't solve most of the puzzles and needed to use a strategy guide just to finish the game. I like figuring out puzzles but SUCK, and then some, at this spatial type stuff. I play games to have fun, not to feel like an idiot, which was what Portal did to me. I don't need that.

here is the most plausable prediction. since valve didnt know how big a hit portal would be while they were developing episode 3, my guess is that since the two games are in the same universe, portal 2 is going replace what episode 3 was going to be.

my guess about valve's portal related announcement is the announcement of a new engine that portal will be running off of. source has been out for almost 6 years now,, and while it still looks nice, everybody, including valve, knows that its time to move onto a new engine. i think portal 2 is gonna run off of that new engine, and they are going to announce half life 3, which will also be running off of this new engine.

or at least, thats what i hope...

That was pretty funny: "Also, the game will be even better," they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

First time I ever laughed out loud at a press release (in a good way). Disappointed but as long as it's not vapor-ware like Ep 3 (or even Half-Life 3), I'm ok with it.
