There were serious worries about BioShock 2 before it was released, but the reception to the sequel was largely positive. Unfortunately, Take-Two Interactive has declared overall sales of BioShock 2 were "slower than expected," even though the game was ultimately "profitable" for Take-Two.
The reaction to BioShock 2's sales were disclosed during Take-Two's second quarter financial results call with analysts this afternoon, where a brand-new delay for Max Payne 3 was also revealed.
In the past, Take-Two has expressed a desire to continue producing sequels to BioShock, far past BioShock 2. A big-budget BioShock movie was also in the works, but has since stalled.
G4 rated BioShock 2 a 4/5, calling it a "definitely a must-play, especially for BioShock fans."

ok, people. video game developers don't make video games for hugs and cupcakes. they make them to MAKE MONEY! so stop with the 'they just did this for the money'. it's not true, watch the vid locks, they put a lot into the game. and everyone does it for the money!
why, why oh why do people always have to compare things to? not only does it take place 8 years after, so different feel to the game, but Bioshock 2 is of course gonna be different.
people, people come now.
I lobed Bioshock 2, cuz i took it for what it was. a squeal to the best game ( in my opinion ) of all time.

There were good elements to the game, but ultimately, they just didn't seem to take things far enough to the extreme with just about every aspect. Plus, the events seemed to just happen, where as in the first, they developed around the character. I still enjoyed it and the story appeared to have taken more work than 80% of recent titles which have received higher accolades. Moreover, I still blame any and all fault on the addition of multiplayer. Needless and takes dev time away from what should be the focus of the game- SINGLE player.

First let me say that I own both games and loved them both very much and I love the multiplayer I just wish they would fix it already . Bioshock should have never been made into a sequel and the reason for that is because Ken Levine never intended to make it into a sequel. The problem is that take two saw the acclaim and sales the 1st generated all they saw were $$$ not a true franchise but a cash cow . And I dont care how much we want sequels , in the end if the original creator is not attached to the development of said game then just dump it till he/she has an itch to expand the world of the 1st game. There are Exceptions to this rule Fallout 3 for example was made by Bethesda but it was the first Fallout game on a console and they had an engine already in place . I put Bioshock up there with games like Halo , Metal Gear , God of War witch was the same team from the first game to the 3rd and only David and Corry left as apposed to Bioshock 2 witch only had 2 of the members from the 1st Bioshock return .

I don't know... I'm really not that picky. I bought it and Can't wait to play it. Love the first one. Curious to see if this is what people think of sequels how they will view Star Wars Force Unleashed II.

There is no controller support for Bioshock 2, that really hurt the PC sales. The first game supported a 360 controller right out of the box but for some reason they took that support out of the sequel. Yes, I know keyboard/mouse is more precise. Some of us prefer the comfort of a controller, that is why I bought the thing in the first place.
Luckily I was able to return the game when I found out no controller support. Isn't even mentioned on the box that it does not support use of a controller.

Well, it really was only a decent game, at best. I still haven't finished it. It's just the exact same game as Bioshock 1, except that the thing that make the first game so great was that it was completely new. Multiplayer was a complete bust. After a really short time, you couldn't find a game because no one was online playing it. If the game had focused more on the beginning of the story and made it a true prequel, then it could have been interesting. Not to mention, you're a big daddy, and a couple of hits with a pipe can kill you?

if they expected bioshock 2 to sell as well as or better than the original, i can see why they think its selling slower than it expected. Bioshock 1 was such a massive surprise hit, and while bioshock 2 was great, it didnt have nearly the level of word of mouth support as the first one

Bioshock 2 was horrible. I just traded it in. I tried and tried to like it, but I couldn't find anything good in either the multiplayer or single player.
Cattac
Bioshock 2 had better gameplay and bioshock 1 had a better story. Bioshock 2's story is still better than 90% of games released recently.

FOV is horrible and I will not buy it till it gets fixed.

Bioshock one was beloved and well received for its high quality writing, unique and new world, and its savage panning of Objectivism and Rand-ian crap in general which when the game came out was making a resurgence in the country (and still is). Bioshock 2 took this carefully crafted suspenseful and intellectual game and turned it into another mindless shooter, not even bothering to create its own environment for the action. It seemed to have been written in committee or to be some type of frankenstein's monster created on some community boards. Good riddance to selling out quality for mindlessness. I hope the video game industry realizes this lesson from the "less than expected" sales of bioshock 2, but i doubt it.
Video game publishers seem as far removed from reality as hollywood and DC politicians.

Bioshock is and always will be a CLASSIC. Sometimes when you have a classic nothing else is needed. No DLC, no sequel, nothing. I think a sequel was a slap in the face of a unique gaming experience. Rapture...Andrew Ryan...and all the twists and turns I dare not spoil for anyone who hasn't played the game. Noticed how no one on this post (so far) spilled the beans on any of the spoilers of Bioshock 1 yet? That's respect, nuff said.

...I got Bioshock 2 used...and I am not great at games and I finished it in 4 days..
I enjoyed it but it felt really short....so I returned it and got H.A.W.X. having a blast with this game....

I'm one of many who felt that bioshock did not need a sequel so i can see why the sales were a little slow. Also i think they use put a fresh paint over the same story and tried to shoehorn it in the lore of bioshock. If they did make a sequel it should have been a new tale of sorts.
freechild
I never finished Bioshock 2, there was know mystery ever in the game. I never cared to push on.... I was fine fine with the first one.
Looking back, there was know need to touch the franchise... Somethings are better just left alone.

I loved Bioshock 2. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first but I know this should have sold better. But I know a lot of people who were sceptical about Bioshock 2.
Warden626
The "point" of this story is to highlight the fact that despite being a sequel to one of the most original and fascinating games to come out in this console generation it didn't make as much of a profit as Take Two would have liked.
What does that mean? As Patrick pointed out the Bioshock universe was looking to get the franchise treatment with additional sequels and a big screen debut but if interest has peaked and fans are fading then the likelihood of either of those two scenarios is put into question.
To me, a Bioshock fan who was eager enough to pre-order the $100 collector's edition of the game along with all of the NECA figures (they are amazing) it's disappointing but not altogether shocking. Personally I would love to see one more installment to the series that focuses on a pre-civil war Rapture but if all I have is what has been given I'll be happy.

There wasn't anything really wrong with 2, but the romance of exploration and uniqueness were gone by that point.
I still loved the SP, but for a different reason I enjoyed the first one. To be completely honest I liked the second story a little better than the first.
The MP aspect I think was completely unneeded. Played it for a short time and eventually got tired of it like I usually do shooters. On top of that all the DLC is aimed at it and none of it really seems worthwhile at all.
Just my 2 cents.
BONERJAM
I loved the original and felt like Bioshock should stand alone not needing a sequel, so when a sequel was announced I simply didn't care.
