A video has surfaced today of what appears to be an extended trailer for a reboot film of Mortal Kombat. However, "appears to be" may have to remain the key phrase describing the video since there is little to no information about it. (*See below for updated info.) Even the title is somehwat ambiguous. The film seemed to be simply titled Mortal Kombat in the clip, but the YouTube channel on which it's posted is titled Mortal Kombat Rebirth.
We've known for quite some time that Warner Bros. was planning to reboot Mortal Kombat. However, for such a major project which in the video, displays stars Michael Jai White as Jax and Jeri Ryan as Sonya, it does seem odd that no one knows anything about it. In fact, the possibility has been considered that the clip is a promotional short film to show during E3 to promote an upcoming MK game. However, the clip looked impressive and expensive from a technical standpoint. -- Way too elaborate for a promo film, especially when you consider that the reboot film has been in the works for some time, now. Yet, it does seem to carry a fan-film kind of vibe.
(Caution: Extremely violent, may not be safe for work.)
On the clip itself, I'm rather conflicted. On one hand, I like the fact that it's taking a more gritty, realistic approach. Fans have been clamoring for a really violent, R-rated Mortal Kombat film, and from the looks of this, they're going to get what they wanted. However, I think that the heart of the Mortal Kombat mythos lies in the idea of it being a clever take on the old-school kung-fu movie genre, with roots in Asian mysticism. It seems like they're trying too hard to drive home the point that they've updated and re-contextualized MK characters, that they've lost sight of the factors which brought the video game series so much success in the 90's. It comes across almost like an over-the-top, ultra-violent parody. (Reptile as a cannibal with a skin disease?! Baraka as a mad scientist?!)
Of course, I'll leave final judgments until I see the film. (Should the film actually exist.)
Do you have any feedback on...whatever it is this clip may be?
*The video turned out to be a test film designed to persuade Warner to go the R-rated route.

If this is a movie trailer I feel like they gave so much away, I mean they gave away an entire fight scene basically as well as the ENTIRE PLOT for the movie.

Hang on, actor turns undercover cop? How undercover can you been after movies?

i don't know, I don't get that mk feeling, only movie scenes that have had that are from the upcoming tekken movie. this isnt going to be the movie that gamers have wanted imo

who cares if they are reimagining the characters? They seem a hell of a lot more interesting than before. Plus I love the gore, the picture, and effects, not to mention the story they are building up. If it's a movie I am already into it and if is a game please just don't dissapoint.

If the trailer is real, I really like the direction they are going.

Was that steven segal as Sheng Tsung? Scorpion as a protagonist?, meh. This actually kinda leaves me flat on it. I actually liked the mythos of the games, changing it doesn't make any sense. The Investigation of this tournement should be held by the NSA, not some lowly detectives. It looks even dumber than the first one.

The actors are B-list....so certainly it's possible it's for the game ala Twisted Metal and Command and Conquer.....
but as said...some of that stuff looks fairly slick to be just in game movies...though that could certainly be part of the gimmick as well.....if they're re-imagining the series in how it plays and looks.....and making their debut with their new publisher....it makes sense to drop a hefty dose of cash into it and go all out...
I certainly wouldn't mind playing a game like that anyway...
As for if it is indeed a movie.....can't be worse than MK2....though totally agree that there's a different vibe in there....perhaps a test run of a couple scenes and concepts...to see how people would react? Kind of like that Sin City Josh Hartnett scene....
As for the classic Kung-Fu mysticism....as far as the original games are concerned....yes...very important...added a lot to the title and kept it from being another generic fighter...
Same can be said for the first film and the tv series which were actually surprisingly good for what they were...
though it's a double edged sword...as those very same elements got out of hand in both the films and the games...not to mention how they decided to over complicate things with the MORE=better misconception....
Cutting that layer of fat to get back to basics certainly could turn out wonderful....regardless of what the project ends up being...

This doesn't look like a fan-made movie. Not with that kinda budget.
If this is a real movie, I'd be really interested. It almost seems they're taking The Dark Knight root for this one (both take a franchise and darken it with realism)
If they have the techno MK theme, I'm watching it hands down. :)

Could be for both

I'm definitely interested in seeing more of this. I think it seems cool that Scorpion could be the protagonist of the film. I don't like the fact that Baraka is a doctor gone insane, or Reptile is a cannibal with that weird skin disease but I guess they have to somehow embed the characters in a more realistic world.

"they've lost sight of the factors which brought the video game series so much success in the 90's. It comes across almost like an over-the-top, ultra-violent parody."
The reason the games were so successful was because they were ultra-violent, or did you just forget the franchise became famous for its Fatalities? Personally Im hoping this is a live action trailer for a new game instead of a movie. The series has definitely gotten stale and could really be helped by a reboot.

I have to say this looks pretty interesting...

Johnny Cage always gets the proverbial shaft in MK movies.

It's difficult to figure which this could be but I too would have to lean towards game reboot. It seems like a huge money-sink for a game reboot, but still one none-the-less. There were too many known actors for it to be a random fan-film, but the fight seen was too long, involving, and gave away what could be a large part of the story in an actual movie (Johnny Cage was one of the key characters in the MK series although he did die off in the second one.). Either way, seems like a very neat and interesting waste of money.

Bah...
Chud.com (http://chud.com/articles/arti cles/23984/1/IS-THIS-VIDEO-FOR -THE-NEW-MORTAL-KOMBAT-MOVIE/P age1.html) is reporting that this trailer is indeed for a NEW Mortal Kombat movie.
"Cat's out of the bag. This is for the movie, and it comes from the mind of genius fight choreographer Larnell Stovall. He's the guy who did the fights for the excellent Undisputed 3: Redemption, on DVD and Blu-Ray right now. I hope that this movie gets made with Larnell plotting the punches, because this guy isn't just a geek like us, he's also got an incredible skill and ambition to create the next generation of fight choreography."
