A video has surfaced today of what appears to be an extended trailer for a reboot film of Mortal Kombat. However, "appears to be" may have to remain the key phrase describing the video since there is little to no information about it. (*See below for updated info.) Even the title is somehwat ambiguous. The film seemed to be simply titled Mortal Kombat in the clip, but the YouTube channel on which it's posted is titled Mortal Kombat Rebirth.
We've known for quite some time that Warner Bros. was planning to reboot Mortal Kombat. However, for such a major project which in the video, displays stars Michael Jai White as Jax and Jeri Ryan as Sonya, it does seem odd that no one knows anything about it. In fact, the possibility has been considered that the clip is a promotional short film to show during E3 to promote an upcoming MK game. However, the clip looked impressive and expensive from a technical standpoint. -- Way too elaborate for a promo film, especially when you consider that the reboot film has been in the works for some time, now. Yet, it does seem to carry a fan-film kind of vibe.
(Caution: Extremely violent, may not be safe for work.)
On the clip itself, I'm rather conflicted. On one hand, I like the fact that it's taking a more gritty, realistic approach. Fans have been clamoring for a really violent, R-rated Mortal Kombat film, and from the looks of this, they're going to get what they wanted. However, I think that the heart of the Mortal Kombat mythos lies in the idea of it being a clever take on the old-school kung-fu movie genre, with roots in Asian mysticism. It seems like they're trying too hard to drive home the point that they've updated and re-contextualized MK characters, that they've lost sight of the factors which brought the video game series so much success in the 90's. It comes across almost like an over-the-top, ultra-violent parody. (Reptile as a cannibal with a skin disease?! Baraka as a mad scientist?!)
Of course, I'll leave final judgments until I see the film. (Should the film actually exist.)
Do you have any feedback on...whatever it is this clip may be?
*The video turned out to be a test film designed to persuade Warner to go the R-rated route.

Actor Chris Casamassa reported in July 2009 that he was reprising his role as Scorpion and claimed that filming would begin in September of the same year, while Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage in the first film) said on Soap Talk that he read the script and planned on returning to the role.
but what about this?

This looks so AWESOME!
i bet if it is a movie, that subzero will have some sort of liquid nitrogen canisters on his wrists so he can freeze people.

I looked on IMDb after watching this and it shows a Mortal Kombat movie in the works for a 2013 release. I hope that they make a new one! The first movie was pretty good, but the second was utter garbage. I kind of like the rethinking of the character bios. A new game would be cool, I guess, but I am much more excited about the idea of a new, R-rated movie adaptation.

Wow, looked interesting.....than they killed Johnny Cage. Now, that movie can go to hell

I'm already disappointed. It seems like they took all the mysticism out of Mortal Kombat. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, but without the magic that's an integral part of the Mortal Kombat story and with Outworld out of the picture is this movie really worth watching?
In fact, they didn't even have to call this movie "Mortal Kombat"; they could've changed the characters' names and called it "Dudes Fighting" and nobody would mistake this movie for being Mortal Kombat!

I'll be looking out for this one for certain! We'll see how it turns out.

Well, this thing's been kicking around the internet for a couple days now, I'm curious what everyone thinks. 2 relatively known actors makes me think it's not a fan film. However, the fact that the harlequin fetus footage as well as the flash of "scorpion"'s face CG are both things that I have seen on the internet before make me think hoax. I really hope it's a movie trailer, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

The trailer kind of gave me the feeling this is going to be another "Street Fighter: Chun-li" movie where they try to re-imagine the characters in a more realistic setting, but end up making the setting and plot look even more absurd.

it got me hooked i wonder if scorpion and sub-zero are going to wear their traid mark suites in the movie i wonder what other charters are in the movie! but the trailer does look good!

My impressions is that the trailer is for a video game. Either that or it is a trailer for a movie that was filmed specifically to be presented to a gamer-audience.
Most trailers use footage directly from the movie, but this scene gave away almost too much of the story to be a good movie trailer. On top of that, there was way too much name-dropping of the characters that an audience not familiar with the series wouldn't care for.
Ultimately, my vote is that it's for a video game trying to get a lot of hype for a franchise reboot.

Anyone else notice the Resident Evil movie theme playing at the beginning?

I just did the crap mo stank in my shorts. I can't stop watching the video it is so good. I want to know if it's a movie or a intro to a video game?
I am leaning towards the video game.
However MK has some HUGE shoes to fill, SF4 and SSF4 can't be beat. MK only has one more chance to get it's old fan base back.

I think this movie looks really really badass.. I love how gritty it is I love the back stories for the characters it sounds amazing I want to see some sub zero vs scorpion fight :)
BlueRectangleOfLife
are they trying to take the Batman Begins/ Dark Knight realism and trying to put that into MK?
Oh yeah, and... DYNAMITE! DYNAMITE!
Bigburito
it's sort of like when they Rebooted Batman and made it gritty. it really just seems to work well...
