Gabe Newell: Half-Life 2: Episode 3 E3 Teaser Image

According to Valve head Gabe Newell, a recent teaser image for the absurdly anticipated Half-Life 2: Episode 3 suggesting the game will be revealed during E3 is, quite simply, fake.

The image displayed the game’s iconic lambda symbol just above the words “Freeman 14th,” a reference to the game’s crowbar wielding protagonist Gordon Freeman and next week's E3 2010. When Newell was asked by Half-Life2.net if the teaser image was a fabrication or the real deal, Newell replied, “Fake" and even reiterated the E3 surprise “isn’t Ep 3.”

The teaser started circulating the internets last week a few days after Valve announced it had canceled its pre-E3 press conference, and replaced it with the always-enigmatic “surprise.” Gamers’ gut reaction to Valve’s big “surprise” cancelation was that it might suggest Valve was finally ready to grant us all our wishes, and reveal Episode 3, along with whatever Portal 2-related announcements Valve had previously confirmed, during E3.

While I’m still not counting out any Episode 3 reveals during E3 (mainly because I just don't want to face the reality of the situation), it appears Valve has every intention of keeping the game under lock and key until the absolute last minute. Fortunately, we've all had a lot of practice waiting, so that should help ease the pain a little...very, very little.

Part of me wonders if there will be a certain point where we, as gamers, stop hounding them about more Half-Life. Furthermore, if we ever reach that point, it will inevitably be when Valve springs it on us.

Well then I give up....c'mon now Valve. We're not getting to Duke Nukem Forever kinda levels here, but at least some images, or something.

Valve is great and all but WTF!!!!!! How long do we need to give you for Ep 3. We the gamers want that more then any other creation that they have come up with and are working on. F Valve until they give ous what we want. HL Ep3

I guess we'll just have to watch E3 to find out. I love promtional articles that actually tell me something I want to know about. Seriously though, the videogame industry is getting a little out of hand with all the viral marketing and teaser stament, countdown websites, videogame book tie-ins, et al. I don't begrudge them all the new customers they've made over the last several years, after all, I didn't start playing videogames until I was 30 (about six years ago). I just have fond memories of how cool things were back then. It's absolutely amazing how fast the industry has grown and IMHO I think it may be experiencing some growing pains.
