Any time an unlicensed football game is poised to drop, football fans watch with bated breath as the months count down to release. Will begrudging Madden buyers have a reason to try something different? Will there be a good enough choice for virtual gridiron gladiators to have -- dare I say it -- two good football games to play in a year? According to Kevin Kelly, NaturalMotion's Backbreaker makes some rookie mistakes, but it's still a decent first effort.
"While you can’t actually break someone’s back in Backbreaker (thanks for getting our hopes up), the game has put all of its marbles in one bag by using the Euphoria engine for the tackling system. Euphoria is NaturalMotion’s own animation engine (recently used in games like Red Dead Redemption and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed) that simulates the entire body, rather than just using ragdoll physics. The game promises that “no two hard-hitting tackles are ever the same,” and it’s definitely the highlight of the game. You can practically feel the power as you steamroll your way through a dogpile, or when you lay out a running back with a well-placed tackle."
After talking to Kevin, I get the sense that NaturalMotion is taking a page from Konami's sports book by offering up an alternative to the EA juggernaut that lets you create custom teams with ridiculous attention to detail. Does the gameplay hold up? Read his review to find out more!

Backbreaker: part sports game, part adventure game
Well I read that Backbreaker is out today for $49.99. While there are no announcer voices I was blown away at the intuitive control, smooth animation, and HD graphics. So off to the store I go to pick this game up day one,...and the adventure begins......
First Best Buy and not the best buy. They wanted $59.99! WTF?! Time to move on to another store.
Next is Gamestop. I grab one of the two display boxes and head to the counter. The clerk is looking for a game to ring up and can't find a new game. I.e. Unopened. So he reaches for a disc to put in the box......uh....NO! I do not pay "new" prices for used games. No! Never will!
So now I'm off to Target. No Backbreaker in stock.
Next I try Meijer's,......no game in stock.
My last try is another Gamestop near by. Only one display box, so maybe this is finally it...ah, no. I take the box to the counter and the clerk gets another box out....that has also been OPENED! He continues to ring it up as I say, "I don't buy used games". He says, "It's never been played"....REALLY!
Who knew I would have this adventure. 6 stores, no power ups, no princess, and no game.
Maybe tomorrow or maybe I'll wait for it to go "on sale" at Best Buy.
One other thing. I bet Gamestop only got two copies and of course they had to open both.

Let me tell you what's wrong with this game, something that is wrong with FAR too many games these days: It's too realistic. If it was a little more over the top... not like powerups, orcs, or deformed humans, but more like Blitz... then I think it would be more interesting. Imagine Blitz heavy hits crossed with Euphoria...

Another game that can benefit from a lower price point. I've only posted a few times, and i'd say most of them involve this topic. If this game retailed at $40, it could serve as a viable alternative to madden.. but until it's mechanics are ironed out, it won't serve as a replacement. So why charge the same price? It's not like comparing MW2 to BFBC:2, because both of those games are polished products with years of releases and modifications. So they can get away with charging the same price point. Madden vs Backbreaker would be like comparing Project Gotham and Mario Kart.
Not to mention it will likely fail to sell enough units to be considered successful, and will be scrapped like a vast majority of first-run IP's.
Hello and goodbye Backbreaker.

I'm buying this game to support competition. It's their first attempt, and hopefully they'll continue to improve in the future.

I thought the demo was surprisingly fun. I hope the bad marks don't sway them from a follow up.
