Valve Replaces Pre-E3 Portal 2 Reveal With "Surprise"

UPDATE: Valve has cancelled this event. So nope, we will not broadcasting at this event.  However you can expect to see Valve on the G4 stage during our live E3 programming where we hope to show off Portal 2 and any other surprise Valve may have.

ValveEven when Valve toys and tortures, they still manage to do so with style and wit. Case in point, an email the Half-Life 2 developer just sent out that announces the “gala cancelation” of the pre-E3 Portal 2 event Valve had previously announced would take place on June 14.

In place of the event will be a “surprise” of some kind, which one can only hope means something having to do with Half-Life 2: Episode Three. If that’s the case, then there will most likely also be some discussion of how Portal 2 ties into the long, long-awaited Half-Life 2 episode.

Luckily for you, G4 will be broadcasting Valve’s pre-E3 press conference, so if you have any interest in finding out what Valve’s big surprise is, you know where to look (hint: it starts with G4).

You can find the full, quite humorous press release about the Portal 2 event shake up after the jump.

"Dear Subject Name Here,

Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word 'surprise', of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.

If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.

Thank you for <<RECORD SCRATCH!!!>>

PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise."

I'm highly skeptical of Portal 2 without the creator of Portal 1 (P1 being their only good game to date).

A real surprise would be Gabe coming out and saying they finally learned how to develop on the Ps3. My other predictions are a new Half Life (whether it's a new episode or 3 or black mesa). A new L4D, or this surprise is that the portal 2 cancellation, like the cake, is a lie

New source engine? New Half-Life? What are the chances?

Valve do not tug on my heartstrings so roughly.

Actually, not to be the bubble burster here... but i was looking foward to portal more than half life.. The multiplayer for Portal 2 has kept me up for nights and i want to see it in action... but if it is held out... it might be for the better...

unfortunately for nerds everywhere, valve said in the portal 2 gameinformer article that they are ditching the half life connection. i think that the "surprise" will be the announcement that Half-Life 3 will be released in 2011-12 and will run on a new engine

They should just make Half-Life 3, the whole episode thing seems kind of pointless now.

Why is Valve considered such a top tier developer? I can't think of any great games they ever made. Left 4 Dead is ok not bad but not great, portal feels like a indi game same with team fortress. Half Life 2 was ok kinda boring never finished it.

They just keep using the same old engine and don't come out with any real good games. So it makes me wonder whats the fuss about. I would say their glory days are long in the past and now they feel more like a rehash modd studio

Hope they did some engine work and brought some new things into Episode 3 cuz HL2 and its episodes are showing a bit of age...
