EA today announced a new hockey game for the Wii. NHL Slapshot will feature the great Wayne Gretzky on its cover and as a playable character and will come with a hockey stick controller.
The hockey stick controller will allows players to "shoot, pass and body check just like the pros," according to the press release...so basically a piece of plastic you snap your Wiimote into.
“EA Sports has been making great hockey games in Canada for 20 years now, and the team behind the game is really passionate about the sport,” said Gretzky. “Being on the cover of the new Wii version of the game is exciting and is probably going to make me a bit cooler in the eyes of my kids.”
The game will be out in September for the Wii only.
I'm personally bummed that NHL Slapshot isn't a movie tie-in game based on the 1977 Paul Newman vehicle Slap Shot. I'd wait in line to purchase a video game where I could be one of the infamous Hanson Brothers. (Extra Points if you get the reference.)

wayne gretzky is what people who dont know hockey say as the best player when asked. most honest fans would list their favourite player first, such as Patrick Roy ;) (3 conn smythes, this is where martin brodeur cannot compete!)

I doubt many people know the Hanson brothers...the original BASH Brothers. I'd play a hockey game with them in it.

I just think it's funny that Gretzky is worried about looking cooler to his kids. Sure, he's not Jagr but, still.. Being the "Great One" ain't too shabby.
Oh, and Extra Points for the reference, really? How about, you owe us points if don't get the reference. You named the movie, year of release, and lead actor! What, you didn't have time to Google the director, too? (George Hill, btw)
Although, I have to agree. A Slap Shot game would be sweet. I wouldn't mind a chance to, "put on the foil.. every game". See, now THAT'S a reference that'll make 'em go, "WTF?"

the glasses wearing guys that got bloodied and also bloodied up. But really, wayne gretzky? I understand that he's probably the only universally recognized hockey player, but why not try someone more recent? There are hockey fans out there.
