There has been a ton of hype about 3D gaming over the last year or so, with many industry-insiders hyping it as the next wave of game immersion, but the problem is, other than attendees at gaming industry events, no one has really had a chance to try out 3D gaming. That's all going to change on June 10, when the first 3D PlayStation 3 games and first 3D Sony televisions are released in Japan.
The games: Mr. Pain, Star Strike HD, WipEout HD and a free demo of MotorStorm 2.
The games and sets are expected to be released in the United States soon afterward, and the market will get its first real taste of consumer response to 3D gaming. The last PS3 update already primed your system for 3D gaming, so you're ready to rock when the games come out here... if you buy the TV set, of course.
Some in the industry think the public will be very interested in 2D, judging from the success of 3D movies like Avatar, others, like me, aren't so sure. 3D games are kind of neat, I guess, but personally, I have no desire to have it in my house, especially if it's going to cost extra. Nothing I've seen has caused that "gotta have it!" reaction that would cause me to go buy a brand new, expensive television and strap on the special glasses. Maybe that's the curse of early adoptation, and there are truly mind-blowing 3D games in the works. Time will tell.
What about you? Do you have a burning desire for depth in your games?

Sorry, don't have time to read through all of the comments, but....
Why do we need NEW 3D HDTVs to view 3D content? Is it not just a picture that is still displayed as any other picture on a screen?
Why can they not set the video to the correct "bluriness" and let us use our glasses we get at the theaters for 3D movies there? Those glasses don't have batteries in them, why do the home versions?
Am I missing out on the tech behind these new tv's????

It's funny how industry leaders say it'll take off and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but everyone here (the consumers) seem to hate it. Personally I hate it too. Get rid of the glasses then i'll think about adopting the fade. I already wear glasses and I'm not going to wear two pares just to experience 3D. It just seems like the same tech that was introduced in the 80's except now it's more expensive. Why don't they ever seem to listen to us?

3d = overrated
Hd = the future

How bad will our games look like if they update current "next-gen" consoles...You have to buy new pc hardware to play 3d..let alone 5 year old tech.

i'm not entirely sure i can even see 3d things, I have ab astigmatism in my eye and ould never do those 3d posters in school

My PS3 [new-gen] has gone through 2 hard-drive corruptions in a year.
Corruption of a range from 100-300 in dlc [beteween rock band, sports games etc)
Reboots without reason.
Given me inner-jealousy for not having a 360 in the first place.
I wonder if I'll be able to see my money-sink in 3D?

hey maybe with 3d tvs combined with project natal we can all get our hologram control fetishes out Yay!

I hope they include some sort of medical insurrance with the game and tv's warranty, haha.
The long term effects havn't really been pubically tested, some people can't even handle this 3d tech for the length of a movie, and seeing how gamers tend to stare at a screen for the longest periods of time, I don't think it's wise to go after selling to that market first.
Just have a feeling there's going to be some medical related lawsuits over the years to come.

Why are the entertainment and gaming industries trying so hard to pawn 3D(a technology that has been with us since the early 1900's) off on us? Are they trying to get the people to buy new equipment? O.K. silly question, of course they are, but these industries have got to realize that immersion starts with imagination, not peripherals(calm down Wii owners I'm not talking about you). And until they can come up with a 3D experience that does not include wearing glasses that cause both discomfort and annoyance in so many, 3D will not take off.

LED tech TVs have just come out and are terribly expensive as it is. Videophiles are going to have to buy LED and 3DTVs just to have both? Or are 3DTV LED tech? Either way it's already $1000-$2000 surcharge for something that is barely supported. Plus how do you demo the tech to people walking by?

I THINK IT WOULD B AWSOME THAT THEY WOULD MAKE 3D GAMES FOR THE PS3 BUT HOW WOULD IT B FOR THE PC THAT WOULD B DOPE ALSO

I thought we were working on small projectors that could project more around you making 3D obsolete, star wars type crap. their is a pain in the front part of my head looking at 3D I think ill pass on 3D for now as i am not trying to go blind nor go into a seizure just because i decided to watch 3D more then just on a few a occasions.

When HD came out everybody had the reaction of "this is a thousand dollar gimmic". Look where HD is now. Its only a matter of time before 3-d is this way too. The only road block I see is the glasses. People wont wanna wear them and people not wearing them wont appreciate the 3-D. If they can figure out a way to either not have glasses or have glasses and the surrounding people dont have a fuzzy view of the tv.

There is two issues with the 3D tv"s going on right now, #1 the price. Its NOT affordable for every body, like some one comment thats only for the rich people, the ones that buy a new tv every 3 years or when a new model comes out. Issue #2 the glasses. Yea you where them at movies but don't compare a 2 or 3 hour movie with 4,5,6 or more hours of playing video games. That will be a little bit anoint for the ones that don't use them.
But don't give me wrong I will love to buy one if the price was lower and is 3D with out glasses. \m/

Why won't 3D just die.

Now that is what I call lazy progression!! How did we go from an industry that constantly come up with new ways to innovate the market. To now these guys resulting to attempts to bring back a novelty that made James Cameron richer then he already was. We pay the extra five buck to see a movie in 3D because 5 bucks isn't missed as much as 3000 bucks would be for a tv that looks and feel just like HD but offers one cool feature for limited media!! Never in the history of gaming did we ever had to buy a tv to enjoy our consoles!! Except for the next gen system. Even then you could still play on a regular tv, but in order to see what the system can really offer, it was in your best interest to buy a HDTV. But at least we had the option. People are just now able to afford the cost of a HDTV, so it would be pointless for consumers to go back out into the market to buy another $3000.00 TV for the feature of 3D...So not worth it!! Especially if I have to wear special glasses that makes anyone who wears them look like a douchebag!!
Geriden
I will never buy a 3d tv and i never want to experience a game in 3d end of story.
StrahdZ21
There is NO reason why a new TV purchase is a requirement for adding 3D to movies or gaming. There is nothing special about the screen. All one has to do is sell a box that will process the source and sync it with the glasses. You would be able to plug any device into this box to process the information and sync it with the glasses.
I just bought a $3000 HDTV. I am not buying another one any time soon. Especially not for one small feature.

Just a few of the ones posting here have seen this games in 3D so far... So way do you hate it so much? If you go to a SONY store they will let you watch some of this stuff...
Why are you going to the movies to see movies in 3D?? Because in most cases they look cool.
Obviously the main reason why people hate so much 3D right now...its the TV prices. Im sure if someone brings you one for free to your house, you are going to say, "nop...take it back i dont want it..."
YEAH RIGHT!!
Just say...im broke (like everybody else) and i wont be able to buy it...FOR NOW.
I am sure everybody is going to jump in to the 3D gaming later on... when prices go down...
For some people glasses are a problem too. I wear glasses all the time and i went to the movies last weekend and even those cheap ones fit perfectly on top of mine...and they didnt bother me at all.
Again...give it a try people.

Speaking of 3-D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =arOUazGZtxc it would be nice if G4 would make an article on this like the Nuggets of the web thingy. Its not made by me but its incredible.
