This morning, EA announced that two separate Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows video games are in development, with releases to coincide with the upcoming Harry Potter film series. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 video game will be released this autumn on "all major gaming platforms" this fall.
Although no real gameplay details were revealed, judging from the verbiage of the press release, this Harry Potter is going for action and intensity over fruity spell casting and games of Quidditch.
“The final Harry Potter adventure has given us the opportunity to make a darker and more action-oriented game than we have before,” says Jonathan Bunney, VP, Head of Production at EA Bright Light. “We believe we are creating a Harry Potter game that the HD console gaming generation will appreciate and enjoy. We have built new technology specifically to allow us to prove that magic is a truly potent force and, in this game, players will need to use all their skills if they want to survive.”
Here's the official game description:
The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 videogame is packed from start to finish with action and combat. Players will be on the run, fighting for survival on a desperate and dangerous quest to locate and destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes, engaging with Death Eaters and Snatchers in epic battle sequences at every turn. To amplify the action, players will encounter ferocious creatures from the previous films in addition to the adversaries Harry faces in the seventh film. They will need to muster their most powerful magic against relentless assaults from all sides. There are no more lessons, no more training. This time the danger is real. It’s time for players to fight for their lives..

Trailer there. It's actually not that bad looking...just ignore all the screen shots you see cause that makes it look really ugly. The trailer for it makes it look vastly superior graphically and gameplay-wise.
I've played all the Harry Potter games (don't judge me). My favorite was easily Order of the Phoenix, but it still wasn't perfect. The environment and easter eggs were great but the action was lacking. It seems like they'll be taking a lot of liberty for the environment and story-wise in this one though. In retrospect, they should probably just make it one game, because there isn't much in the first half action-wise that really happens. The only thing I'm afraid of is that these games (specifically part 1) will fall victim to the Goblet of Fire button mash/"hardcore" action debacle.
I don't really like it when they make up their own story to make it more action-y. It just doesn't make sense story wise and ends up falling flat. Dementors, dragons, and gigantic wand battles didn't happen in the first half. It's good to see the Ministry of Magic and the aeriable battle in that trailer, I just hope they don't skimp on what's important.
I'm actually really hoping this game is good. And Part 2.

Just give me a graphically updated Order of the Phoenix game and I'll be happy. I'm hoping that after the movie tie in games are finished some studio(cough, Rocksteady, Cough!) picks up the IP and gives us an open world ultimate HP, go everywhere, do everything game that incorporates all the books. Like the Lego games are going to be but with nex-gen graphics.

Honestly you probably only need one harry potter and the deathly hollows game...

Personally, I enjoyed most of the HP games. They're great to play with the kids because (with the exception of one) are all puzzle based with only sporadic battles. 'Goblet of Fire' tried to be a hack and slash and tanked in my opinion. They went back to the puzzles/exploration after that. I think fans of the books like the puzzle element and fans of the movies like the battling. To change the series into an FPS or simply a fragfest will alienate the core audience of the game series.

the 7th book was easily the most consistent through out the book- it only takes a couple chapters for the deaths to start coming and Voldemort to come after him, and it doesn't slow down at all. Probably the reason that this is the one being split into two is because there's so many action scenes, which are relatively easy to translate into movies. (And games...)
Probably still not going to be a good game, though. sad :(

It would be pretty cool to have a good Harry Potter game, but I'm not going to keep my hopes up

First off, why of all the books did they pick the 7th to be split into two movies? If I remember correctly, it has been a while, the first half or so of the 7th book was pretty boring. Anyways I haven't played a Potter game before so don't know if they have been fun, but from the description it sounds like it will pretty much be a hack and slash, or should I say a wand and slash! I have a feeling the Lego Harry Potter game will be better then these two, I love those games!!
