You read that number correctly. According to NPD Group's "Gamer Segmentation 2010" report, the "extreme gamer" category of consumers who actively play games are playing 48.5 hours per week. That's over two days out of the whole week. How many "extreme gamers" are there? Who are they?

NPD Group breaks down types of game players into a number of categories, including: Extreme Gamers, Avid PC Gamers, Heavy Portable Gamers, Console Gamers, Online PC Gamers, Offline PC Gamers and Secondary Gamers. The report says console and PC use is up, handhelds are down.
The "extreme gamer" category is small, representing only 4% of the total gaming populous, and are typically 29-years-old. What might surprise you is that not all of them are male. The NPD Group told me that while 66% -- in essence, the majority -- are male, 34% of "extreme gamers" are actually women. That number has increased over the past few years, from just 27% in 2008.
Interestingly, they also found "extreme gamers" had the lowest average houshold income, but they purchased 34 games over a three month period, compared to a six-game average overall, suggesting World of Warcraft is not responsible.
"If they're [extreme gamers] buying/receiving 34 games in the past three months," explained NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier over e-mail to me today, "that is a little over 11-per-month. At $50 a game, that would be $550 -- quite a chunk of change for folks with more limited disposable income. So it's reasonable to assume that they're participating heavily in the used market as a means to make their gaming dollars stretch a little further."
Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games usually retail for $59.99 at launch, but it's not common for used versions to be available for $49.99. Wii games, with some exceptions, launch at $49.99.
Overall, however, game time is on the rise. Gamers two-years-old and above are reportedly spending 13 hours a week participating with video games, compared to 12.3 hours in 2009.
For reference, here's now the NPD Group collected their data:
"In January 2010, The NPD Group fielded an online survey that was completed by18,872 consumer panel members ages 2 and older. Responses for individuals ages 13 and older were captured directly, and responses for individuals ages 2-12 were captured by “surrogate reporting,” whereby a parent/guardian brings the child to the computer to answer questions, and the child then answers either with or without the guardian’s assistance. Final survey data was weighted and balanced to represent the U.S. population of individuals ages 2 and older."
I certainly don't fall into the "extreme gamer" category, but I'm considering counting my hours for fun. If you think -- or know -- you're one of these people, drop me an e-mail and let's talk about it.

So..about 7 hours for every day in the week, 8 hours for 6 days, & 9 hours for 5 days.
I'd say I've put in my time as an "extreme gamer", though not so consistently anymore.
I have my gaming streaks, & I have my cool-down weeks.
Though I think its a bit unrealistic that anyone would be BUYING 11 games a month/34 games in 3 months.
But I WILL say that I own 2/3 the amount of games that are in the picture used above.
Also..I used to play a LOT more than that, back when the original Pokemon Silver, Crystal, & Gold came out - only times I wasn't playing was when I'm sleeping, taking a shower, doing hw, or in class. I was legitimately a Pokemon master back then, playing two versions @ 1 time (since I have 2 GameBoy Colors), and swapping the cartridges out every now & then. And since my friends would ask me to train their Pokemon for them - I'd have like 2-3 copies of the 3 versions @ 1 time.
But now, I don't have as much time as I did before..which bites..especially since I still have a backlog to burn through..
[I know! What am I doing wasting my time on HERE, when I could be playing said backlog?!? LoL]

The summer of 2008 i played diablo 2 for 80 hours a week for 3 months to get to lvl 94 and be the 12th highest lvl druid in the ladder. I guess i was an extreme gamer for that time period.
I don't play nearly as much now a days. Maybe 10 hours a week, split between the ps3 and PC.

I used to play bout 40-55 hours a week but now ive got wife and kids a just cant do it anymore, still crave for those long, long sessions but life moves on.... still cram about 4 hours a night though when the tykes are in bed.
damn that call of duty!!
It just takes over.

I'm more casual now myself, but about 3 years ago I recall logging in 48.5hours or more easily per week playing Final Fantasy XI. The people that are still hardcore into that game still log in that much time easily per week.
khycker
so 4% of all gamers are "extreme gamers" huh? they spend 48.5 hours a week playing games, and i'm one of 'em... i don't know if i should be proud or sad... oh well...
OmegaRedAK47
I only play maybe 10 to 13 hrs a week, I just don't have the time to anymore. The most I everyplayed was 15 to 20 hrs a week in high school.
NightTimeDrunk
Thats sad, I'm definitly one them. I'm close to if not more than doubled that a week. I play at least 76 hours a week on my PS3, either alone, with my kids, friends that come over, or online with my PSN friends. Wife works and I'm pretty much medically retired. I'm a gamer for life... sleep you ask..? I'll get plenty of sleep when I'm dead.
Dindril
I almost fit into that category, but I'm an unemployed high school student who never does homework (and yet I'm still graduating next week :D), so I have a lot of time on my hands. Now I need to get a job, and stop being such a bum!
thatrandomdude
Hmmm...I don't think I play quite that much, but I've probably done it before. But I certainly don't get that many games in three months. The last game game I bought was Splinter Cell; Conviction, and before that Battlefield BC 2.

Lol only 48.5 a week I can play 4 days a week in the summer or more, I've been playing since I was seven I've played over 100 days of world of warcraft in litttle over a year, I'm 15 male skinny and one game can last me a while like CoD but even if I could I wouldn't buy a lot of games in a month because the game would get way to boring
miva2
i wish i was...
i should play more games =D
torpedomagnet
I'm definitely not in the 4% although I have recently become a bit addicted to omgpop.com My console use though drops significantly when I move out of the dorms and back home for the summer...as in I seldom actually unpack my Xbox
horror4all
I've never counted my hours to know. I know I was like that this past week because of Super Mario Galaxy 2. It's usually during new releases that I play non stop.
I buy a game per week (usually used). However, since it's the summer, I have bought a total of 5 games this past week.
I think I play 2-3 hours during the day and at least 4 hours at night on average. *shrug* I don't really watch the time.
It doesn't help that Steam is really addicting to get games from.

Once my classes are done for the school year and MGS:PW and Crackdown 2 come out I may be in that group

I would say my gaming hours per weeks are like the stockmarket, it goes up and down. It crashed in the months of April and the first half of May do to working 10+ hour days 7 days a week planting corn and soybeans on the farm. But now that is pretty much all over and with the purchase of Red Dead Redemption I more thatn likely play 4-6 hours a days. Though I still work 6 days out of the week and lift with my friends who are back from college I get these hours from 7pm-12am. My first two years of college I would play 6+ hours a day. The great thing is I was still able to pull an overall 3.8 GPA and run college track/ cross country without a problem. But I would take my xbox home the weekend before finals week and leave it there so it wouldn't be a distraction. During thoughs first two years of college I probably partied a handful of times. My good friend/teammate Kevin always gave me crap about not being sociable, but I disagreed with him. A lot of my high school friends are gamers like me. Usually 4-5 times out of the week we would play Horde mode, Call of Duty, Halo, and so on together. Not to mention all the other gamers in the dorms that I met though two years expanded my gaming social network. I don't see a problem with gaming but it if starts to interfere with grades, work, and outside social life (relationships with family or hot girlfriend) I would gladly hang up my xbox live headset for a week or two.
Shadowhawk4735
Shoot, I probably play about 60+ hours per week, but I only buy about two games per month for all of my systems (not 2 per system and definitely nowhere near 11 games per month), plus about 8000 Microsoft Points worth of content. I'm 40 years old, too, though my income could be better since I'm a disabled veteran (USAF). It's probably because I have few better things to do, considering my situation, plus I've always enjoyed video games since about age eight when I discovered Space Invaders and Pong (I think that was about how old I was. It's definitely a better hobby for veterans than drinking yourself to death.

Okay, I read the whole thing and maybe I'm missing something but "extreme gamer" is in quotations throughout the article so did someone say that or is it just a widely recognized term, and if so, for either quote category, what the hell does "extreme gamer" mean? Is it just people who play that many hours? They never explicitly say. I hate polls like this, give me more INFO!!!
Skarsgard
I don't buy that many games but i get a lot of play time due to online school. So i probably spend that much on WoW and on my 360.
illywillie
I play when I want to slash can. It ranges on whether my life permits playing and when I have an awesome game to play but I can say that I may have on occasion spent more than I had on a new game knowing full well to wait was the smart choice. I can't help that I love games, why fight it?
King_Aaron_Moses
i also like how Klepek ends it by saying if you fall into this category drop me an email and we'll talk about it. Like its intervention or something. its not an addiction its a cure, For a non-magical life
