Borderlands developer Gearbox Software could be gearing up to throw a fully formed hat into the increasingly crowded zombie game ring. At least, that’s one conclusion being drawn from a recent trademark filing from the company for something titled Z-Day.
Silicon Era snatched up the filing, which is for games and “films about action and adventure," and they seem to be under the impression that the “z” stands for “zombies.” Not a terrible guess given how pervasive the zombie genre is these days. Plus, Gearbox has a long history with the first-person shooter genre, and zombie shooters is certainly popular territory. Not to mention the whole The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned DLC for Borderlands, which, you know, had zombies in it.
According to Gearbox’s site, they have three mystery projects in the works, so there’s a good chance this Z-Day is one of them. Given that the name was just trademarked last week, it’s hard to imagine Gearbox will be sharing any real details anytime soon. Then again, E3 is coming up, so you never know.
As for what I think the game is about, I’m going with Zugzwang-Day. Not only does it suggest a theme of sacrifice and pain, which is always compelling, but it’s also really funny sounding.

The more zombies in our entertainment, the better. They need to rise up and put the kibosh on all these 'pretty, emo vampires'.

Sounds like it might have a tie in with some of Max Brooks' books (i.e. Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z, etc.) They reference Z-day, or the day when zombies, not humans, run the world.

Good, because 'Zebra-Day' didn't sound too entertaining.
I played Borderlands and enjoyed it thoroughly. I would really love to see where they go with this.
