Third Activision Studio Working On Future Call of Duty Games

If recent job listings are anything to go on, developer Sledgehammer Games’ currently in development Call of Duty game will in fact be a first-person shooter.

The listings, posted over at Gamasutra, cover a wide range of jobs, from gameplay engineer to sound designer, but the real eye-catcher is the mention that the listings are for positions with Sledgehammer’s “Call of Duty First Person Shooter development team.”

Based on previous statements from Activision, the Sledgehammer COD is supposed to be a bit of a departure for the acclaimed military shooter. The phrase “action-adventure” was even used to describe the game. This isn’t to say that an FPS can’t also be an action-adventure game, but the adventure genre isn't typically associated with a first-person perspective. Plus, Call of Duty: Black Ops has the whole traditional COD FPS base covered.

Then again, if Activision and Sledgehammer are able to pull off whatever mad concoction they have brewing up that melds action-adventure with an FPS, it would be a new direction indeed.

i think that a new concept for the call of duty games is great. i personally think that treyarch didn't do as good of a job as we all hoped they would have but they did bring some good things to the game tho. i personally think that the game play of the mw2 is much better as far as game style and play, not saying there wasn't things in the game that didn't need to be fixed but i think if they can come up with a game that was an mmofps game that would change everything hopefully they do something new to keep the game going in the right direction.

If Sledgehammer games does make Modern Warfare 3 an FPS I really really hope they fix the laundry list of problems Modern Warfare 2 has. I believe we can all agree on that. It seems to me that Infinity Ward didn't do an extremely bad job with the components of the game such as multiplayer. Where they obviously screwed up was the security part. Sledgehammer I hope you all make Modern Warfare 3 the game Modern Warfare 2 was supposed to be. I wish you the best.

Infinity Ward needs to atleast confirm if there is going to be a MW3 or not. I also believe that they need to keep a type of zombies game and splitscreen multiplayer online. I would love to play video games for Sledge hammer games for money.

Hey Activision I hate to sound kinda harsh but, I honestly think your making a big mistake for firing infinity ward. And in a way i hope i'm wrong but, If you and sledgehammer mess this game up like you and treyarch did with crap ops(black ops) i'm not playing any other activision titles and sledgehammer titles ever again. I will buy it first to see if i like it or not and if its not modern warfare 2 like with enhanced features 3d graphics in high hd quality with alot more weapons to choose from with real weapon customization and to really beable to customize our own perks you might as well call it crap ops 2(black ops 2) because if so you might as well call it that.

First anyone who says call of duty should enhance single player, campaign, mode, and focus less on multiplayer and co-op zombies is crazy. Call Of Duty gamers don't buy Call Of Duty for campaign mode. I know folks who never have played campaign mode and would not have purchased the game for the campaigne mode alone. Sledgehammer needs to stick with some core basics and then expand with "wow" factors everywhere. I of course would welcome single player game enhancements but not at the expense of multiplayer or co-op zombies mode. So my advice to sledgehammer is stick with some core principles then "WOW" the pants off of us. Go Call Of Duty! I'm going to kill some zombies right now!!!!

First I don't agree with watering down the mulitplayer version at all. My hope is that sledgehammer sticks with some basics when it comes to multiplayer. Multiplayer and co-op modes, particularly co-op zombies, is bread and butter for Activision and Call Of Duty. I, of course, would welcome single player game enhancement as well but not at the expense of multiplayer or co-op modes. I love Call Of Duty and I love Call Of Duty with zombies even that much better. I would love to see a zombie adventure mode first person shooter game addition. That would be cool. My hope is that sledgehammer will "WOW" us! In closing let me emphasize that the basic core of the Call Of Duty game should not change drastically at all. Bring all the enhancements and wow factor you want but don't dumb down the multiplayer or co-op player modes. People don't buy Call Of Duty for the single player mode. They never will buy it solely for single player. I know folks who have never played the campaign. As a customer I am for any and all enhancements but if you want to lose your fan base then dumb down multiplayer and co-op zombie modes. Thats what people live for in the Call Of Duty gaming community. Good Day and lets go kill some zombies. Whoo hoo!

I vote Respawn Entertainment aka Infinity Ward. They will make something greater.

I am going to deeply miss Infinity Ward making COD series but now the new name for them is Respawn entertainment and I hope they run activision to the ground along with sledgehammer. Besides that what the hell is this "Call of Duty taking a departure from the military role" I think sledgehammer games needs to do more research. You can't make a game and throw on the call of duty title, the words "call of duty" means in time of war you are called upon your country to do duty and serve. That's why every call of duty game has a military role. Sounds like sledgehammer and activision just want to slap on a title like "call of duty" and hope the game sells. But from the past I played horrible FPS and I can expect Call of Duty going down hill because of this. You can make a great FPS just don't put the call of duty title on it, cause that would do nothing with the game. I hope sledgehammer will do more research before making call of duty, cause this is a great series made by the best "infinity ward" now respawn entertainment, cause remember infinity ward made such a great game engine treyarch uses it, in there call of duty games even black ops. Infinity Ward set the bar high and people will expect alot from a game especially with a title like call of duty. Another example would be like halo made by bungie, it would be like if bungie left the scene and gave the rights away to another game company and it would do nothing with halo or the universe of halo but they will throw the name on the game cause it will sell. I am an avid Call of Duty fan and I am not going to buy any more call of duty titles any more, I will buy black ops but nothing from sledgehammer. My loyalty goes to respawn entertainment cause I know what they are and I know what they can make or produce in the future, I think they will make something great or greater then call of duty. After all they did make call of duty just imagine what else they can do.

How come no one ever thought of the possibility that maybe this "DEVELOPMENT TEAM" is only working on future MAP PACKS for Black Ops..??

Just because there's a development team for it in Sledgehammer, doesn't necessarily mean its an entire game that they're working on.
Wasn't Raven Software(?) pulled to make maps for Black Ops?? Wouldn't the group working on those map packs ALSO be called a "CoD FPS Development Team"??
Maybe Activision tasked Sledgehammer with the same thing - make future Black Ops maps, so Raven can GET BACK TO MAKING MY GOLDENEYE 2010 (won't be "2010" at this rate) FPS remake..

And if Activision & Sledgehammer are sticking with the "Action-Adventure" description for Sledgehammer's new CoD, then it'll most likely be a Third Person Shooter, somewhat along the lines of either their (Sledgehammer's) own lineage - Dead Space, or the critically acclaimed Uncharted 2 (seeing as that game won a lot of GOTY awards, and had a big sales number - its only logical, especially if Activision is in it for the $$$$).

Sometimes, it helps to visualize beyond what's only 3ft. in front of you. (=

I'm over call of duty multiplayer. the first modern warfare was the peak and the second was proof that more of everything doesn't always make a game better. Especially more players.

I am wondering if this will be affected by the lawsuit, where Activision can not release a post-Vietnam Call of Duty without the written consent of West and Zampella. Which i don't think they would do.
