Over the last decade or so, Hollywood movies have cannibalized just about every aspect of video games, whether it’s free-roaming cameras, huge boss-battle set-pieces or over-amped, bombastic action sequences, but formulaic action flick Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time manages to jack something you wouldn’t think a movie would ever touch: The tutorial.
Tutorial levels in games are a necessary evil, of use to those few people who have literally never played a game before and don’t know you look around with the right stick and move with the left. Prince of Persia treats its audience as if it has never seen a movie before, and must be led through the watching process slowly and laboriously.
Example: The scene where Jake Gylenhaal discovers the power of the Sands of Time of the title. He’s carrying a stolen dagger with a prominent red button on the top, (it looks a little like a PlayStation Move controller, actually). In the middle of a fight, Jake/Dastan presses the button, and, wham: Time goes backwards a few seconds. The audience buys this conceit instantly. It’s not complicated. But that isn’t enough for PoP director Mike Newell. He repeats the sequence of events again. Fine. Good. We get it. Then, Jake Gylenhall explains the powers of the dagger. “Did you just see that?” he asks. “I hit this button, and Time went backwards!” Then he repeats the thought. “Time totally went backwards! Whoa!” I expected him to turn to the audience and lecture us: “Does everyone get it? I hit the button and time goes backwards.”
The time-travel-dagger itself is an interesting game mechanic in Ubisoft’s 2003 Sands of Time game, but as the Macguffin at the center of a film, it doesn’t work that well. A device that can erase events makes for a fun game when you fall off a ledge and can reverse the mistake before you hit the lava, but in a movie, it makes an already light-weight plot utterly weightless. Who cares if someone dies when characters can just hit the mystical rewind button and bring them back?
Plotwise, it’s standard issue, dumb-summer movie story time: The Prince and his Brothers rule an empire, but are suckered by the most transparent political ploy in film history. The king's brother, a shaved and goateed Ben Kingsley as Nizam, plants some weapons to cause an invasion of an innocent, spiritual city. I’m honestly not sure if the revelation of Nizam's betrayal is meant to be a surprise or not: It’s telegraphed so blatantly by the movie’s earlier scenes – Kingsley practically twirls his mustache and cackles -- that when he turns out to be evil, everyone knew it was coming, even people who didn’t understand how the dagger works. Even people in other theaters, seeing different movies. Pro-tip for leaders of empires: Don’t trust royal advisors who look like Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon.
Anyway, the Persians sack the peaceful city. Gemma Arterton meets Jake Gyllenhaal. The two handsome royals hate each other, fight over the magic dagger, begin to fall in love, lose the dagger, find the dagger again and otherwise move through a threadbare adventure plot toward a workaday showdown between Dastan and Nizam.
The plot only vaguely makes sense and the characters barely exist. In a game, you can get away with plot holes and stock characters, but here, since we’re not controlling the main character, we expect a little more than avatars moving from digital set piece to digital set piece.
The acting is fine -- Jake Gylenhall tries, and Ben Kingsley chews scenery -- but the characters are so empty, there’s nothing to grab onto here. Even the expensive special effects aren’t that special. They’re spotty. In some scenes, huge, sweeping vistas are created that seem utterly real, but in other scenes, simple animal effects look cheesy and fake.
Other than the tutorial, this movie takes little from the video game. The main character’s skill at jumping around is intact, as is the setting, but Prince of Persia is more heavily indebted to the adventure epics of the 1950s than the video game. The film works, fleetingly, when it takes the anything-goes vibe of those old sword and sandal flicks and mixes in the joy of the Prince’s Persian Parkour, but the movie is so dumbed down and over-explained, that even the nutty joy that might be derived from the Prince’s frantic motion is quickly deadened by an over-reliance on digital effects, stupid and shallow characters and a boring plot.
Gamers: This is not the video game movie you are looking for. While it does nothing to actively destroy the Prince of Persia game franchise, even as mindless summer time fare, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is a failure. It's a little like The Mummy, without the heart and soul.

This movie was great and a real pleasure to watch. I hate when cynicism overrides objectivity and turns a simple analysis into a personal lash out at a great endeavor to entertain fans and casual movie-goers alike. I am sad to see G4 turn into a vehicle for nothing but hostility and pettiness. Everyone should go and see this movie and judge for themselves. There is no wisdom to be gleaned from such a distorted review.

I thought the movie was actually pretty good. Jake did fine as the prince and there were some good action scenes. Yes, the story sort of dull at moments and the dagger should have been incorperated more for its importance in the plot, but it was made up for in random twist and turns. Stephen, you did a fine review...even if I disagree with some of the aspects.
At least it wasnt Mario or Doom.

It's unbelievable how many haters I see here. I watched the movie, and liked it. It wasn't perfect; it was too fast-paced,and it started out kind of corny, but the acting ended up being very well-done, the costume design and sets were very good, and IMHO, the CGI didn't detract from the movie experience to make it topheavy like a lot of these big-budget action flicks do nowadays. And most importantly, the acting was quite good. Really, the only problem I had was that some of the plot points were a little thin, and that was mainly a symptom of the movie's too-rapid pacing. Personally, I think Hollywood finally did a video game movie right. It gives me hope for the future.

I really wish hollywood would leave video games alone. I'm dreading them ruining my beloved Uncharted franchise.

I don't believe in this review. its not the best movie this year obviously but it was a good movie. It didn't feel draggy and the story is simple but it was good enough. And about him explaining how the dagger works?? was it that long for you?? if they had that scene explain the whole history of it for like 10 mins fine but it was so short. Not sure if you were watching it in slow motion, your example didn't really help your point.
I liked the movie and honestly i was going into the theater thinking it would be horrible. With game's like mortal combat, Mario bros and many more video game adaptation, it couldn't have gone so much worse. Its the best and biggest video game adaptation so far, There will be better movies based on a video game in the future but at least its improving.

Personally, I feel that that there will never be a "great" movie based on a video game. There will be plenty of "good" movies based on video games (ie. Mortal Kombat)but just like the way movies never do their book counterpart justification, the same goes for movies and video games. The movie will NEVER be as good as the game its based on.

WOW g4 i love you but you are full of crap. I saw the movie, he spends like 5 seconds explaining how the dagger works. Dont get all pissy because the movie dosnt fufill your nerd agendas. It was a good movie if you dont walk in deciding it is already a bad movie.

OMG, the movie is fine. I was entertained, that's what it's suppose to do. Don't listen to this review.

I saw this movies last night and i thought its was fun it was not the normal video game movie that sucked it was actually pretty good movie with characters that if you played the game knew and it had funny parts i mean i could not stop laughing at the ostrich races..... anyway i think that if you know or have played the game series then give it a try the one thing that gives this movie bad reviews is that they either have assumption that the movie will be amazing and break the curse or suck and do the exact opposite. In the end all i am trying is to say is if do see the movie try to be more optimistic and take it for what it is a fun summer movie not the best movie but a fun one
onesockgamer9

This was an awesome movie for those who never played Prince of Persia and was expecting another #$%tty video game movie.
I was really surprised how well it was cause they made into more of an "movie" rather that just fanboy !@#$.

I'm glad I didn't listen to G4. I watched the movie tonight and it was really good. Maybe a video game site shouldn't be critiquing a movie....just a thought, considering you guys were way wrong. Even after reading Stephen's review, I still had high hopes for it and I wasn't disappointed, at all, after watching it. Is it best movie of the year? Of course not, but it's not that crapfest Stephen made it out to be.

No offense guys but WTH is the matter with everyone? This was a good movie. I love how jaded everyone is about something as stupid as the scene the explains the power of the dagger. This is the best gaming movie ever. It had good action, was well filmed, had some fun humor, the chemsitry between the tow leads was very good, and acting was fine, and honestly I thought the story was well done. Is it some master piece of a film? No. But it's certainly not a bad film. I really don't get it. I highly recommend this movie. You'll have a good time watching it if you aren't so full of yourself.
Cryptomaster420
ok havent seen the movie yet its the first movie to be made after a video game since super mario bros which bombed big and failed epically when it hit theaters
miva2
the movie wasn't bad. it was entertaining while watching it, nothing memorable though.
at times it did capture the atmosphere of the tsot game, but at others you wouldn't even know it's prince of persia if it didn't have the dagger.
i'm glad they used an alternative storyline and didn't just tell the story from the games.
i expected more "Give me the dagger!" moments though. it had a couple of them, but i expected more xD
it's still worth watching, as long as you don't expect too much.
