This Week's New Releases: Mass Effect 2

Yup, folks, the cinematic sci-fi action game, Mass Effect, is on its way towards becoming a Hollywood cinematic sci-fi action movie. Legendary Pictures acquired the feature film rights to the Mass Effect franchise and is already in discussions with the screenwriter of I Am Legend and Thor to pen the screenplay. But wait, there are even bigger names jumping in on this one.

According to the announcement, the BioWare Doctors/co-founders, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, as well as Mass Effect executive producer, Casey Hudson, will serve as executive producers for the movie alongside film veterans Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Avi and Ari Arad. You may recognize those last two names as the gents working on the film adaptations of Uncharted, Infamous and Lost Planet.

"At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture," said Casey Hudson. "With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans."

Granted, it's going to be a while before we see ANYTHING about the Mass Effect movie, if it ever happens, though it's already got us tickled. Will Commander Shepherd be male or female? Better yet, will he/she be renegade or paragon?? At least we know who will play Miranda. What are your thoughts, ME fans?

Well normally I'm all for a movie adaptation of a film. But with Mass Effect, this is the first time I'm auctually scared about the movie. I understand that Bioware will be involved with the making of the movie but, what story can they tell in that time. Maybe a filler of what happens between 2 and 3. Or maybe follow some side characters around between 1 and 2. Maybe they have something completely different in mind set in the ME galaxy. Well anyway I'm still scared.

ME was certainly cinematic in style...but how to turn a 20+ hour gaming experience into a 2 hour movie is the problem every video game film has faced. They will have to cut so much out of the film that I don't see the story making total sense or the characters carrying much of the same weight as they did in the game. With the right director, writer and actors anything is possible, but I don't see Hollywood taking it seriously enough to take the trouble to find the right director, writer, etc.

I have my hopes because it could be very good if done right, but I have my doubts the necessary time, effort and most importantly money will be spent to make it worthwhile.

Won't more than half the fans be disappointed with the decisions movie Shepard decides to make? Plus, I love my female Shepard and you know they won't give us any of that hot...wait! The pr0n version will be the true blockbuster!

This is good news because Mass Effect is, to me, more like playing a movie that watching one.

NOOOOOOO... this sounds like a bad idea to me...totally goes against everything that is great about Mass Effect: the fact that you can craft your own unique story and be your own commander shepard. What makes Mass Effect compellng is the connection with shepard and the the ability to shape the universe the way you see fit, which is impossible in a movie. Mass Effect is my favorite franchise of all time, and i really hope this gets scrapped

Well, just because someone is writing the screenplay doesn't mean it will ever get turned into a movie. A studio will have to option it and put up the money Then you have to get a director and cast, and unfortunately, video game movies never get a good staff. The studios just want to figure out who can make a steaming pile of crap for the least amount of money/risk.

The studio that picks this up (if one does) will look at it like this: There are about 2 million gamers who care about this franchise and would see the movie - what about the other 25 million people they need to see the movie in order for it to turn a profit? Will people see it?

If it has to happen, they should at least take Shepard and the crew out of it. Make a movie out of the First Contact War, anything but the solidification of Shepard's character and actions.

Come to think of it, this series would actually make a fairly decent movie. A bit cliched (the stoic hero saving the galaxy from a host evil aliens and A.I.), but there's definitely enough there to make a coherent plot.

The fact that Casey is hopping on gives me slight hope, but all I have to say to that is "Eww, Hollywood wants to ruin another big franchise and make it into a movie?"

Mass Effect was BIG mostly because of it's long and epic story. Can't imagine how they plan to fit the main plot into perhaps 2 1/2 hours of film without butchering everything. Then again, it always happens, right?
