Yup, folks, the cinematic sci-fi action game, Mass Effect, is on its way towards becoming a Hollywood cinematic sci-fi action movie. Legendary Pictures acquired the feature film rights to the Mass Effect franchise and is already in discussions with the screenwriter of I Am Legend and Thor to pen the screenplay. But wait, there are even bigger names jumping in on this one.
According to the announcement, the BioWare Doctors/co-founders, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, as well as Mass Effect executive producer, Casey Hudson, will serve as executive producers for the movie alongside film veterans Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Avi and Ari Arad. You may recognize those last two names as the gents working on the film adaptations of Uncharted, Infamous and Lost Planet.
"At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture," said Casey Hudson. "With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans."
Granted, it's going to be a while before we see ANYTHING about the Mass Effect movie, if it ever happens, though it's already got us tickled. Will Commander Shepherd be male or female? Better yet, will he/she be renegade or paragon?? At least we know who will play Miranda. What are your thoughts, ME fans?

christian bale for my choice. no female leads though IMO, the game just doesn't feel the same. though i have only completed ME2 with a female renegade. and yeah holy crap mathew fox looks like the standard shephard...

If they do make this movie it would be a huge mistake to cast Commander Shepard as a major role. It would completly ruin the Shepard that we have all created in our minds. We have all created shepard and to have him/her put into a defined character would just be unforgivable.

My only concern is that they are using the screen writer from I Am Legend. They changes so much of the movie from the book, which I don't really mind. What I did mind is that they changed the ending so far that it lost all meaning in the title.
He did not become legend. Not in the sense that he did in the novel.
I am cautiously hopeful. but so far I am kinda scared.

I'd prefer it if a Mass Effect movie didn't involve Shepard at all. The problem with so many video-game movies is they try to take pre-established characters and bend and twist them to their liking. The Silent Hill movie was on the right track. Mass Effect, like Silent Hill, is perfectly set-up where everything is so expansive and descriptive that some sort of side-plot is easily established. Mass Effect isn't just about Shepard (afterall, Bioware said that Shepard's story is a trilogy... do we really expect them to stop the Mass Effect series at only three games? Same with Gears of War. The world is clearly set up for more stories and characters to take the reins). There's also a lot of history that could possibly be delved into for the movie. As I said, it's when they try to portray characters we know and love that viewers begin to nitpick and complain about the small details. I say go with something new and original in the Mass Effect universe.

I vote for female Shepard...not some sexy slinky girl, but a fit, strong woman. I want a Shepard of action, strength, and passion. Think of Sarah Connor in T2 or Kara Starbuck Thrace in BSG...both women of strength and capable fighters.
My actress of choice would be Katee Sackhoff from BSG...she is awesome and could play either a paragon or a renegade with equal believability.

Ha, they are probably going to make an entirely new storyline and just have it in the mass effect universe with our luck.

I think Matthew Fox would be a killer fit for Shepard, but like others mentioned, I think it would be better to sort of tell a side story based around a new character, mass effect is special in its own way, so if they try to copy what happens in the games its just going to be this 2 hour watered down version of a 20 hour experience, but if they make some new characters and tell their own story, while respecting the lore and fiction of the games, they can make both the fans and casual viewers happy.

Hopefully this could break the cycle of bad movies based on games. Also I totally think Natalie Portman could pull off a good Jack. ( her being bald in V for Vendetta)

The most important thing here is the script. If you don't mess it up, and are faithful to the source material, it should be an epic movie, no doubt.

MASS EFFECT> STARWARS

I have been for this for a long time since playing Mass Effect has felt like a cinema to me, specially with the Saren fight where it breaks off between Saren and Sovereign. However, I do hope this dosn't get chopped up and give the title a bad image since Games to Movies hasn't been the big hits.
Lets just pray that the Devs behind this can make the movie(s) stay true the Mass Effect way and not a crap film like others.

I don't care if shepherd is a man or women. As long as there is a love story, awesome space adventures, along with major plot twists; I will cheer you guys on for making an epic story, legendary.
Cheers and Goodluck!

only person I can see playing a male shepard that resembles the canon face, is Dominic Purcell

I'm a little scared about this one. Hollywood isn't known for adapting video games, comic books, and novels very well. Got my fingers crossed on this one.

Only way I can see this working is as an expansion, rather than an adaptation. Shepard's story is already (being) told, we don't need a rehash that's just going to tick people off because the movie doesn't match their perception of who Shepard is. Do like the books...tell a side story, set within the universe, against the back drop of the game's events. It's ripe enough to do so. Fans of the game will "get it", and non-fans won't be any the wiser.

I think it will be good as long as they stick to the Mass Effect bible they've already based the game around. It could be better than Star Wars put enough into it. The story is there.
