Yup, folks, the cinematic sci-fi action game, Mass Effect, is on its way towards becoming a Hollywood cinematic sci-fi action movie. Legendary Pictures acquired the feature film rights to the Mass Effect franchise and is already in discussions with the screenwriter of I Am Legend and Thor to pen the screenplay. But wait, there are even bigger names jumping in on this one.
According to the announcement, the BioWare Doctors/co-founders, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, as well as Mass Effect executive producer, Casey Hudson, will serve as executive producers for the movie alongside film veterans Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Avi and Ari Arad. You may recognize those last two names as the gents working on the film adaptations of Uncharted, Infamous and Lost Planet.
"At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture," said Casey Hudson. "With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans."
Granted, it's going to be a while before we see ANYTHING about the Mass Effect movie, if it ever happens, though it's already got us tickled. Will Commander Shepherd be male or female? Better yet, will he/she be renegade or paragon?? At least we know who will play Miranda. What are your thoughts, ME fans?

can't wait to hear more about this, i think it would be really cool if they did a kind of origin story of how sheapard became total badass, like the mission where he made a name for him self in the alliance that took place before the events of ME 1. that seems like itd be cool to me.

Hmmm,,,I talked about this with a friend of mine and the best game to film adaptation we could think of wouldn't feature Sheppard. Blasphemy? Nah, everyone has their own Sheppard in terms of gender, race, etc., so that is could easily become a point of contention. The game itself already tells an excellent story and is delivered better than many movies I have seen recently, and I would hate to see it screwed up. A Mass Effect movie would be more interesting and original if the focus was on someone/something else like the First Contact War, the Krogan Rebellion, Saren (or some other badass spectre), or even the Protheans. There is just so much potential to tap into without the possibility of damaging our established views/ideas of current characters.

Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, Dennis Haysbert, Gerard Butler, Cliff Curtis,Josh Hartnett, or Angelina Jolie. That's my short list to play Shepard. Shepard can look like anyone. Heck, if it becomes a franchise, maybe someone new could play Shepard in each film.

See I can see Mass Effect's universe transitioning into a movie well but Heavy Rain?! I hope the ME movie brings in a lot of non gamers so everybody can experience Mass Effect's epicness!

I am not sure Matthew Fox really fits, He does look right, but I think there is a better choice out there. Sam Worthington is intense enough for the role. Too bad Liam Neeson is not younger, he would have been perfect in my mind, just enough good-guy bad@$$ to do Shepard justice.

Uncharted, Infamous and Mass Effect all sound like terrible movie ideas. As a PS3 owner I have absolutely no interest in paying to see a movie based on games I've already paid to play. I would think the same would apply to any 360 owners when it comes to Mass Effect.

How are they going to condense a long, involved story like Mass Effect into a two-hour movie? It would be better served as a cable series.

Well they should start with the first movie so first we need a hot, well fit woman to play ashley. As for who should play commander shep...Hmmmmm Me? Im former navy so I knows the fancy ship speak :D

actually, if you want to watch a movie that looks a lot like mass effect, you should check out Serenity.. just watched it and it has to be one of the game's strongest influences.

old news guys. old news. i found out about this HOURS ago. lawl. no but for real, im super excited about this. and also, Matthew Fox (Jack Shepard [ i know right?] from lost) should play John Shepard. they look like the same person. I know there's some other guy that looks even more like him, but come on... its Matthew Fox

I hope they should try and get Matthew Fox who played Jack Shepard on Lost to play the male version of Shepard if the movie goes through. He already looks a lot like the default male character for ME, and he's already played one character with the last name of shepard, lol.

I might be reading too much into this, but the statement said "compelling backstory", which leads me to believe that the film won't be about shepard, but about the humans' first contact with the council races, and the turian war. I think this is great news,a ctually, because it means they won't be interfering with canon and can't be criticised for failing to make it EXACTLY LIKE the game. Instead of just repeating what's already happened, this means we can just expand the universe as it is. Unless I'm wrong. in which case the film will be terrible.

I think that this would be a great movie, I think though that Shepard would be a guy because the game commercials show Shepard as a guy. As for good guy or bad guy i don't know but the other big question is when and were will it take place
