George A. Romero is the father of modern zombies, creating the genre of zombie-movies nearly single-handedly with 1968's low-budget masterpiece Night of the Living Dead. Since then, he's directed five other Dead films (including both Day and Dawn of the Dead). But what does Romero think of the monsters he gave birth to?

G4 and our sister site FEARnet were honored to host Mr. Romero recently putting the man himself in front of his own twisted grandchild, Valve's zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2Director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) sits with George Romero to get his reaction to the game, his thoughts on zombies in general, and some juicy info on Survival of the Dead, out on May 28 in theaters and viewable on Xbox Live and VOD now.

I think what best reflects romero's work or vision of a zombie is seen in the Nazi Zombies for World at War. At first they are slow and do not rush you but if your not paying attention or make a mistake they can overwhelm you. Plus they are actually dead.

George Romero is a brilliant mind for the zombie genre, but he stated that he's not sure what people have against being dead rather than being infected, in my opinion (however credible that is) being infected is a more realistic possibility rather than a dead person coming back from the grave for human flesh. Both are a bit of a stretch but science fiction is supposed to be like that. Both are great and no better than another, just different.

I just call left 4 dead zombies infected actually. Infected people can run, zombies can't, this way we all have fun.

i dont want to cut the guy short (cuz he really is one of the best Zombie Directors) , but i feel like he's just mad he didnt think of the fast zombie first.

What a waste of time to take one of the greatest horror movie directors and sit him down to look at a game that ripped off his best ideas. And how can you have someone sit there and keep talking about the game to him like George would stamp his seal of approval on this "running zombie" shooter. Not to mention the guy interviewing him seems to know almost nothing about George and his movies and WHY they are great. He is like a trekkie with ears on but never watched a single episode of star trek.

Do you not get the idea that the reason his zombies dont need to run is that they dont need to, they are patient and will get you in time? They gather the suspense and sense of dread to make you fear the eventual demise they have in store for you?

Please G4, there are better ways to interview someone as great as George AND talk about gaming. I feel bad for George wasting his time talking to a noob and being prodded to approve that game. Sorry this is lame.

u guys should of showed him nazi zombies from CoD:world at war, witch i think is so much better then left for dead, they were much more like the zombies george does, with it being more about being overwhelmed then buncha crazy monsterous zombies that r so diffrent from your classic zombies. minus the flamming dogs of course. George Romero FTW.

Survival of the Dead was great! Better than Diary of the Dead at least. I know he likes his independent film style but I hope Romero makes at least 1 more big budget movie. I thought Dawn and Day were his best movies. Also the remake of Night of the Living Dead that he made was great.

i think if dead rising 2 was already out that they would have gotten a better reaction from him with that series apposed to left 4 dead because of how the zombies act in the dead rising series.

ZOmbie stories shouldn't be an exercise in special effects mixed in with campy dialogue!

Zombie stories should be an example of how mankind's inability to work together and constant need for war is the ultimate downfall in any situation forcing them to work together in order to survive. Robert Kirkman said it best when "the best zombie films are thought provoking."

I absolutely love and respect george romero but he needs better actors! everything since land of the dead has been to campy for its own good, at least for my tastes

Really good stuff. I liked the insight of the how his main idea is how he manages to put the characters in the middle of stupid decisions. I wasn't I fan of his more recent work but I can see from a different view point where he was coming from.

    Put Joe on more btw.

Dear G4, if you're going to interview such fan favorite talents such as George, perhaps you could spend a couple hundred bucks on a compressor so the audio SOUNDS half way decent?

I love Romero! My fav still has to be "Night of the Living Dead" remake in the 80's. Second would be a tie "Dawn of the Dead" 2000's remake and "Dairy of the Dead"(not how much of that was George). Granted the scarest element in his movies was the thread of your fellow man. I guess when the crap hits the fan and chaos insues. It's every man for himself. I'd like to see a live make of "Left 4 Dead". Specialized zombies will put the fear back into the actual zombies themselves.
