The return of Sonic is going to happen a little later than expected, unfortunately. Sega of America announced today Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, originally scheduled for summer, won't be arriving until the end of 2010. On the plus side, Sega's bringing it to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, too.
The mixed (read: harsh) fan response to Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 seems to have prompted Sega to provide their development tean more time to work on the blue dude's return to 2D platforming.
"Sega has made the decision to ensure that Sonic 4: Episode I is a game worthy of bearing the weight of its name," said the company in a statement on its official blog. "To do so, we’ve decided to extend the game’s development – and, for the first time ever, we’ve mixed internal suggestions alongside fan feedback to make some new, positive changes to the game."
Now, the first downloadable-only entry won't arrive until sometime in "late" 2010. Sega isn't getting any more specific than that, but it did confirm a new platform for the game: iPhone and iPod Touch. No reference was made to an eventual iPad version, but it doesn't seem out of the question.
A longer wait for brand-new Sonic, but hey, maybe it's for the best. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 arrives on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, WiiWare and iPhone sometime later this year.
