It's been two years since Harmonix updated Rock Band. The studio released The Beatles: Rock Band last fall, instead of delivering a yearly update, ala Guitar Hero. Rock Band 3 is later this year, however, and Harmonix is telling gamers they'll be "surprised" at how big the game is.
Rock Band 3 will be introduced in the next few weeks. It's unclear what Harmonix has planned, though Dhani Harrison, the son of the late George Harrison and who collaborated with Harmonix on The Beatles: Rock Band, has said Rock Band 3 will teach people to play music.
Harmonix are even upping expectations a bit on their official blog, too.
"Stay tuned over the next few weeks and months as we chat about some of the in-depth details that make up Rock Band 3," said lead designer Dan Teasdale, setting the stage for the game's upcoming reveal with a tease. "I think you'll be surprised at just how big this game really is."
It sounds like Rock Band 3 could be something a bit more than Rock Band 2 with more music. The prospect of a video game teaching me to learn a bit more about the music I love (and probably get me to pick up a whole new set of plastic instruments in the process), is intriguing.

i would like some more modern metal in RB3. ie Bullet for my Valentine, maybe a few Black Veil Brides songs, more Disturbed, more System of a Down, Underoath, more All That Remains, Lamb of God (of course), Slipknot (RIP Paul Gray), etc

Double Bass Pedal for gods sake! Please, Harmonix this would be epic. Keyboards and dual/backup vocals would be killer. Also, why doesn't Harmonix cater to the younger crowd? Put some MGMT on there, at least some effing Led Zeppelin or Jimmy Hendrix. Really, I'm tired of crappy mainstream music. This game needs more creative bands on setlists.

I'm all for a robust sequel, but knowing that they're going to be releasing band-specific games (that probably won't be importable) leaves me more than a little cold.

HiHat PEDAL!!!!

Meh...
I'd rather just wait for details on GH6 and hopefully they transfer all the great gameplay elements from that one and just concentrate on putting together a better setlist, which was the downfall of RB2. I don't care how much DLC there is, if most of it isn't worth buying, then I'm not on board. I believe I've downloaded more DLC for GH5 than for RB, but not by much. This will be interesting when actual details come out.....

It would be amazing if anyone could convince Led Zeppelin to use their music in a game, but hey, maybe Rock Band can pull it off? (and don't forget about more Freezepop!)
Im hoping for some actual music teaching, but in a really fun way that is. I definitely have enough school as it is.

@ ncates00 the same could be said for Madden or any sports game but you must look at the bigger picture. It exposes people to music they wouldn't normally hear and you get to interactive enjoy music without it sounding like crap, and it just a game like Madden or any other sports games noone will substitute for learning a instrument but theres no telling how many people it can influence to learn.

RB games are good fun, and they are really fun with friends. But honestly, I would much rather sit down and learn the songs and play them FOR REAL. That's why I don't get these games. It's kind of a waste. I'm like why should I get RB to play like "More than a Feelings" or "Stairway to Heaven" or something when I can play it on a real guitar?

i cant play my RB any more. i got a bit bored, heck i even bough Lego RB thinking it will help me but not really. So it was fun while it last it. I went back to play my real drums, i just got to get my rhythm back

i love all things harmonix, even though i wasnt big on Beatles Rockband because of just slow gameplay i see the reason for it. Dont really care about the setlist since they release so much DLC plus the RBN, i do think we need more punk and less calssic rock, infact just go 90's and newer

I hope the additions include better customizations. The unique thing that they did with Lego Rock Band was the customization (namely your Rock Den). I say take it a step further...I want to customize the way my rocker plays on stage and his different moves. I want to be able to create actually tours. I want to audition for in-game bands and play with them. Why not even create an actual Battle of the Bands where you can watch the other band play? Maybe they could throw in the ability to watch virtual bands play and create your own music videos as well.
However, I doubt none of these are going to be in the game since they probably mean more songs...

For those of you who are wanting to learn to play instruments using RB, you should check into the ION Drum Set. The ION Drum Set essentially is an electronic kit to be used for RB2 (and if you invest in the Drum Brain module, it turns the set into a REAL set!). Harmonix, PLEASE make the ION Drum Set compatible with RB3! AND the DLC that I bought for RB2!
carolynscoffee
ditto to gambit1023. good selection!!
wolfman01
How "bout they let you create your own setlist for RB3, that way everyone's happy.
gambit1023
Only thing that matters when it comes to music based games is THE MUSIC!!! It doesn't matter what the visuals look like or "career modes"...it's about the music. RB1 had a great set list, RB2 was mediocre but made up for it in DLC so I have high expectations for RB3.
My wish list for RB3:
1. PINK FLOYD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. U2
3. DEF LEPPARD
4. ZEPPELIN
5. I know what your gonna say but...MORE CHEESY 80'S SONGS.

all i want is Dispatch and State Radio, give the indie Jam Bands a chance, they have great lyrics fun guitar playing and tons of bass and drums. whenever i listen to that kind of stuff i always think about how much fun it would be to play on Rockband.

I'm not too keen on the idea of having to shell out for new guitars and, maybe, a drum. While the idea of new controllers being able to teach me how to play the guitar initially sounds fantastic, leaving the already large install base unable to play the game with the controllers they've already bought will have me running for the hills by the time the game comes out. Only an option to play the game the way it was originally conceived, with the current generation of controllers, would keep me from being pissed off here.

Harmonix better deliver, or the music video game genre will be done. I will keep my fingers crossed.
mattmcb0692
yeah i got an answer for anyone who says they need to make more realistic instruments. get a real instrument, thanks to rock band and guitar hero i can play guitar its not that hard
