Microsoft this morning gave out the date of the first downloadable DLC for survival/horror game Alan Wake. The Signal will be available across the world for download on Xbox Live on July 27. Along with new, spooky adventures, the DLC is expected to address the non-spooky problems of Alan Wake's sometimes spotty facial animation.
The first DLC is free, if you have the token that comes with both the standard and Limited Collector's Edition of Alan Wake.
As for the facial animation, here's how Remedy, Wake's developer, explained the situation:
"We have a few different methods of doing facial animation - in-game using FaceFX and motion capture used in cinematics. While I think it'll always be possible to get 'fugly' single frames out of any game we definitely learned a lot doing Alan Wake, and will try to improve the way we do things to get best possible looking facials. In fact, we're using some of the improvements in the DLC production already."
Whether those improvements will come with this piece of DLC remains to be seen, although, quite honestly, I didn't see much of a problem in the game itself -- the faces looked fine to me.
Alan Wake is on store shelves right now, and I highly recommend it.
