No Playable Celebrities In Next Guitar Hero

Guitar Hero 5

According to the current issue of Official Xbox Magazine, the next Guitar Hero game will take the series back to basics, and will drop the playable celebrities that caused so much legal hassles for Activision recently. Other changes include a focus on rock and roll over pop music, and the addition of character powers.

Here's a list of the changes to the game (via go Nintendo)

  • back to basics approach
  • past Guitar Hero characters return
  • recruit each character by playing their song sets
  • unlock their alter-ego and gimmick (Lars becomes Warrior Lars, and allows you to get a x6 multiplier)]
  • quickplay feature revamped
  • carry over previous DLC
  • Streakers, Momentum, Do or Die now available in online competitive modes
  • new Power Challengers
  • Queen, Kiss, Black Sabbath confirmed
  • Quest Mode features Gene Simmons as narrator
  • sustain open notes when playing bass
  • CBGB is the only real-world location to appear
  • no real-world celebrities as playable characters
  • much bigger focus on rock 'n' roll

Both Guitar Hero and Rock Band have the mechanics of music games locked down tight, so, for me, the only deciding factor of the worth of the games is the song list -- everything else is just window dressing. Until I know what's actually shipping with the game, I'm reserving judgment, but if the focus is more on harder rock, I'm less interested. I like variety. Sure, Sabbath is awesome, but throw in some Jackson Five and some Squeeze too, just to keep things well rounded. I'm glad the playable celebrities are gone, though. That was disrespectful to Kurt Cobain and Johnny Cash, who both had no say in how their likenesses would be used.
