Activision Registers Futuristic Call Of Duty Websites

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Activision has registered a slew of domain names that may point to the direction the company plans to take the Call of Duty series. As you may have guessed, the series could be headed into The Future. Activision registered "callofdutyfuturewarfare.com" as well as variations on the theme like "Advanced Warfare," "Secret Warfare" and "Space Warfare."

By itself, the reservation of some URLs doesn't say much about Activision's concrete plans for the Call of Duty franchise -- they could be reserving those URLs on the mere possibility that the series is headed into the future -- but the thought of Modern Warfare in space is pretty intriguing, and it's a logical step for a series that started in World War II and moved to the present day.

I could see a Future Warfare game as a hard science fiction take on the shooter genre, with an emphasis on what space combat might actually be like 30 or 40 years from now, as opposed to the anything-goes-as-long-as-there-are-lasers school of sci fi that many games use.

What do you think about Future Warfare as an idea?

1.] Bungie beat 'em to the punch. The Halo games will forever be the KING of shooters set in the FUTURE. Hence the reason why the first was dubbed "COMBAT EVOLVED".

2.] Competing with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, much??

3.] Wasn't the deal for the Modern Warfare name, with Respawn Entertainment, for the current era & ONWARD - meaning future eras as well??
How's Activision able to claim rights for games with eras set in the future, when it was clearly included in the terms for acquiring the Modern Warfare name? (Like smitske mentioned)
And to my knowledge, that dispute between them & R|E isn't resolved yet, so if R|E wins, then Activision can't make future-era shooters.

4.] Don't get me wrong though; I think its an interesting, if not logical, next step in the franchise's direction, but Activision would have to tread carefully in directing their franchise into the future-era approach (assuming they'll even be able to keep the rights to future-era shooters [see #3] ).

4A.] And if they ARE to approach the future-era, they'll have to examine & learn from the (mistakes of the) game, Darkest of Days, in terms of coming up with weapons of the future (among other things).
Maybe take a page from their book, but IMPROVE on it - or their entire book.

5.] Besides though, I think making a future-era shooter is more of R|E's thing to make.

6.] Activision should just have Treyarch make "[ 'CoD' ]: Zombie Warfare" (modern-era), and bank on THAT.

Space game? Bad Idea. Just picture it, fights inside a space ship, closed in, lots of square rooms, and a bunch of shoot through walk ways. Sounds more like they are trying to simplify the effort they need to put into the game and since the weapons dont exist they dont have to worry about keeping their characteristics authentic. They may do some maps on planets, but honestly, to do that right they would need to their imagination and not their cash register.

I think this would jsut be another "Dead Space" except without the monsters, and honestly I think that would kinda dumb. Cause we think of rediculous weapons that would never be made and lets face it, Actvision needs IW for this one. Thats for damn sure.

hope not because if they are trying to compete with ghost recon then good luck with that one.

Wait a second....Didn't we just jump to "Modern" Warfare? Now we are going into sci-fi stuff? Wasn't the point of COD to capture the feel of battles in previous and current fights? I think activision is going to screw over their best franchise if they go along with this...

Wow.......Here we are with Treyarch trying to do a GOOD job with CoD and already Activision is making the next one? Sad. Treyarch, after Black Ops, LEAVE Activision and do what IW aka Respawn did.

if they lose the lawsuit they are not even allowed to do that...
Might I remind you the suit says W/Z sues because Activision only has rights to make COD games up to vietnam. This might mean that it was done for nothing because they might not be allowed to make it.

Well this proves the point that Activision is trying to suck the Call of Duty series dry.

    Advance Warfare:

    A. Uhh GRAW (ghost recon advanced warfighter)? kinda sounds a wee bit Similar.

    B. Modern Warfare was a Futuristic (by like 20 years) war game, how much more future are they going to go?

Call of Duty was always about the realism, seems like they are just going to throw that title on any shoot 'em up game they want now.

See I feel it is a problem with the publisher decides for the development team, what game they are going to make next. Because then unless they are excited about the idea, there is less or no passion put into the game.

On paper it may sound/look like a great idea, but it's a whole different thing when it gets realized and out there. Maybe they could do a beta or something like that so they don't make another mess again like with their previous game(s). Might get criticized because they're copying Bungie, but if Bungie themselves get involved maybe it could turn out possibly as equally great as Halo, or crash and burn and become the end of CoD as we know it. Wait is that why Bungie is with Activision now so they could help resuscitate the CoD franchise? I don't know I just have too much blood in my caffeine system right now lol.
