Congrats, Ubisoft. Splinter Cell: Conviction was the top-selling game in April, with the Xbox 360 exclusive moving 486,100 copies during the month. The industry as a whole whole, however, didn't do so well, according to the hardware and software numbers for April 2010, released by the NPD Group. The full breakdown is below, complete with the software top ten and a hardware sales rundown.
Starting this month, the NPD Group is no longer releasing sales date for the complete top 10. No reason was provided by the NPD Group for the change, but going forward, it's the top five.
Video Game Software Sales, April 2010:
- 360 -- Splinter Cell: Conviction, Ubisoft, 486,1000
- DS -- Pokemon Soul Silver, Nintendo, 242,900
- Wii -- New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nintendo, 200,3000
- DS -- Pokemon Heart Gold, Nintendo, 192,600
- PS3 -- God of War III, Sony, 180,300
- Wii -- Wii Sports Resort w/ MotionPlus, Nintendo
- 360 -- Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Electronic Arts
- Wii -- Wii Fit Plus w/ Balance Board, Nintendo
- Wii -- Just Dance, Ubisoft
- PS3 -- Super Street Fighter IV, Capcom
Video Game Hardware Sales, April 2010:
- Nintendo DS -- 440,800
- Wii -- 277,200
- Xbox 360 -- 185,400
- PlayStation 3 -- 180,800
- PSP -- 65,500
"The industry experienced its worst year-over-year decline in April since July '09, and the fourth largest year-over-year percentage decline ever after September 2000, June '09 and July '09," said NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier in comments included alongside the numbers. "Some of the decline is explained by the shift of Easter timing. In April '09, consumers attributed $55 million of industry sales to Easter as a purchase occasion, which would account for about 21% of the decline from last year since Easter purchasing happened in March this year."
Frazier did note PlayStation 3 is the only platform to have seen positive growth year-over-year and year-to-date and the decline in overall handheld sales heavily contributed to the overall decline.

Maybe because, like me, other people are waiting 'til Black Friday this year to buy all of their games??
And, FOR ONCE, I totally get why the DS sales are up (Pokemon AwesomeSilver & CraptasticGold).
But # 6, 8, & 9 just need to go away, completely. ESPECIALLY #9!! SERIOUSLY!!
"Just Dance" needs to *JUST DIE*. I detest that game with a PASSION. [Can you tell?]
Quite frankly though, I'm surprised Splinter Cell: Conviction did better than God of War 3, BF:BC2, & SSF4.

Other than Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption there is nothing good. Even the pc mmo market is suffering because its the same ole same ole. I think 2011 will be a better year for gaming.
NarutoTheSage
God of war 3 still kicking ass :)

I see everybody dancing around it, but nothing good (besides Conviction) came out this month. Alpha Protocol, Crackdown 2, New Vegas...all coming soon. People are saving up to get the GOOD games that are coming.
infamouscole15
all april had was splinter cell and super street fighter 4
TheFeedMack

Is it the fall game rush? No! Then who cares!

Even though Conviction was number one for the month of April, mainly because lack of another big titles out that month (with the exception of SSFIV, though probably doesn't help that SFIV was released a year ago), Conviction didn't fare that well compared to Choas Theory. In one month after its release, CT sold 2.5 million worldwide. So is Splinter Cell going back to its roots or more Splinter Cell: Bourne Identity to come?

a lot of new games come out on may 18. I can't wait to pick up red dead remeption and alan wake. sales on may will be more than april. Glad to see xbox 360 still leading over ps3 this year.

Maybe if the games wouldn't cost 59$ in this economy and bring it down to 39 for Nintendo and 49$ Sony/Microsoft then people will buy all the good games and not wait for them to be Used!!!

you cant really blame the economy because its technically getting better. I think the reason is that xmas and the start of the year were packed with games and everyone is trying to catch up instead of buying a second console. For example I just picked up Uncharted 2 and AC Bloodlines and im planning on getting Heavy Rain. I simply wont have the money to pick up a 360 even if I wanted to. Or god forbid my PSP brakes or something i wont be able to get a new one.

Over Saturation of the market is to blame I think. Like more games came out in the last 4 months than at Christmas time. I bought way more games in the last 4 months then I did all of 2009.

Patrick has a penchant for posting overly dramatic articles. Game sales are down because no one is releasing anything or worth of any interest, and the companies are still ignoring their fan base on numerous titles. Big shocker.
MyXxBitterXxHeroics
april was something of a dead zone for games.
hardly anything came out, except for the x360 exclusive release of splinter cell.
Tman88
ModNation Racers, Blur, Split/Second, UFC Undisputed 2010, Skate 3, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2 all come out in this month so I'm sure that May sales will be significantly higher than April. Even when sales are down, games still sell a lot each month, it's just that certain months' sales are a little lower due to a little thing called a recession.

Its kind of funny, I really didn't buy anything myself either. Not because there was no games I wanted to buy, but because I already had plenty to hold me for a few weeks.
ROCKnROLLA42
i didnt buy one game in april all the games were crap but im picking up red dead and alpha protcol

I did't buy anything in April, but I'm buying 2 games this month, already got skate 3, going to get Red Dead next week.

Congrats Ubisoft! Splinter Cell: Conviction was a blast to play. Hell, it was literally the only reason I bought a 360.
RockieOllie
