It will forever go down as one of the great epic gaming battles of all time. Years from now children will gather around to listen to the lobby elders tell tale of a devoted band of gaming warriors who refused to let something as trivial as the shutting down of the original Xbox Live service get in the way of their Halo 2 multiplayer and glory. Or someone will just be all, “Remember those dudes who kept playing Halo 2 weeks after Microsoft pulled the plug on Xbox Live? That was cool.”
Either way, it’s a crazy story, and it’s one that has reached its inevitable end as the last remaining player, Apache N4SIR, was kicked offline yesterday morning, bringing a close to the great Halo 2 battle of 2010.
As of April 30, there were just eight players still playing Halo 2 online, but as Kotaku reports, that there were just two players standing as of Monday afternoon, Agent Windex and Apache N4SIR. Shortly thereafter, Agent Windex got the boot, followed a few hours later by his devoted comrade.
It was a valiant effort for all of those involved. And as for the original Xbox Live, you have finally found peace, dear friend. Rest now. And just show our appreciation, let's take a look back at some of your best moments...one last time.

I do think its cool that these guys are so devoted to a game they would spend that long just to keep it going. But this quote from another forum sums it up nicely 'turning what should have been a triumphant last hurrah into a prolonged death rattle.'There is no reason those servers should of stayed open, if a company wants to close down its servers after so many years they should be allowed to do so. Instead these guys just prolonged the inevitable.
OT Doesnt halo 2 still run for the pc, if they love the game so bad why not get it for the pc. Its cheap, almost any computer can run, and you can use your xbox controler.

Kudos to Agent Apache & Windex N4SIR; I mean, Agent N4SIR & Apache Windex; I mean...
..On the serious though, mad props to those guys, to be able to stick it out for so long.
They deserve Flaming Helmets/Recon armor & free LIVE Gold equal to the amount of time they held it out on Halo 2, before they get booted. And maybe a replica Spartan helmet & the Reach figurines too [Double Legendary Swag Package].

RIP XBL, and for those who stuck around past the closing date, letis hope it was more of a joke than compulsion. Also, I hope you're enjoying Halo 3 and later Reach.

I still dont get why the comments that are against microsoft receive thumbs down and negative comments. now you guys explain me, do you really believe that the old xbox live service was pulling down the improvements of the new one?? come on!! technologies -like several people say it here- move so fast that can improve the current services. is not that hard to move the servers from xbox from the servers fo the 360, they are paying for it!!! but like my good fella Tylerbear: thanks capitalism

I still think these guys need to file a Class Lawsuit on M$oft for shutting down X-Box Live... they showed not respect to the gamers who dedicated time and money online.

I think all gamers, regardless of console preference, can appreciate these people's devotion to doing something they love. A noble end to Xbox Live fought by the brave warriors of Halo 2.

i know that xboxlive can't be a perpetual service but i still think it's terrible that they just shut it down even thought people were still playing.
there is no open warning saying that after x amount of years we will terminate some of the services your games connect to. there's probably something general in the legal writings but if it's not openly stated whats the justification for not stating that the game you bought has a limited multiplayer lifetime. to me it's wrong because microsoft knows how rabid halo fans are and by terminating the services for an outdated game they in effect force said players to buy into their new system and game. it's not fair and it's just plain rude especially since there are now warnings that the service will be cancelled at an unknown time in the future.
if i buy a product and a service it should tell me how long i can expect you enjoy that service and or product. i never played Halo 2 simply because they wanted me to buy windows vista to play it on my PC...another seedy and underhanded business tactic...thanks capitalism.

And for the Gods finally struck down their online service, upon which he told his devoted disciples "My Sons! Time to find jobs, meet the women of the world and move out of your parent's basement. Go forth, and live!...for once."

this only shows again how micro$ does not care about their customers, doing a monopoly of their own services.... my admiration for those two guys, I don't like halo but these have earned my respect (and lets not forget their electricity bills for having the xbox turned on)

That's real gaming right there. I think all of us can take a page from their book and apply it to our online gaming adventures!! Never give up, never quit, and if the moment allows it...Teabag the enemy!! Much respect to true gamers!!

Hey, this is a great new movie idea for Uwe Boll !
Anyway, I loved Halo 2, I went back to it after a few months of sucky Halo 3 and even when it was coming to an end it was still a really fun MP game, it was still better than alot of current next gen games.
