The idea of a game running at 60 frames-per-second has been a major talking point for developers and gamers this generation. However, as Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski recently told Computer and Videogames, there are some things more important than a blisteringly smooth framerate.
"Our target is, and shall remain, 30fps. When asked about 60 we always respond that we'd rather have the extra juice to put more on screen and stick with 30,” Bleszinski explained, while discussing Gears of War 3.
By forgoing the slicker framerate, Epic has been able to “put more on screen,” which should provide a much more visually arresting experience. Of course, this is hardly surprising news considering Gears of War and Gears of War 2 ran at 30fps, and are among the best looking games of this generation; and Gears 3 is expected to look even better.
So I guess the question is, is it high time gamers and developers stop putting such a big emphasis on the 60fps mark?

The Human Eye / Puny Eartlings only see 30 fps.. Jedi see 120 fps , 60 fps is worthless.... :)

What's kind of funny is that I seem to remember an article on G4 not to long ago discussing the frame rate of God of War 3 and how amazing 60fps was and how it's really wonderful to see so much detail and have it run so smoothly.
Epic isn't choosing anything. They are being forced to work within the limits of the current console. Their so called "choice" to stay at 30fps is nothing more than a cheap attempt at covering up the fact that the 360 just doesn't have enough processing power to run everything that they want to accomplish. And this is coming from a HUGE fan of the series & studio AND I think the 360 is a fantastic gaming console. But I fear that in order to compete with current market trends Microsoft is going to have to release another console rather quickly before gamers and developers start to stray away and head towards other systems that can handle the intense loads that are being created. Besides, who wouldn't want to see another big console from Microsoft?! If we stop pushing the envelope on game development then eventually we will hit a stale mate and games will become boring and repetitive because everyone will be pushing the console to it's max and nothing more can be done.
I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed in Epic for it's choice to stay at 30fps because they have always been a company that pushes the envelope. To see them give up performance over looks is kind of disheartening. But at the same time, it is the last Gears game for Marcus Fenix. Who's to say that one of the next game/spinoffs won't be a "next gen" advancement. Can't really blame them for sticking to what their used to and what they know works.
Wow...that was waaaaaay to much information. Sorry about that.

I play on a 20" VIZIO HD LCD that runs at a blistering 60HZ... Can my TV even display 60FPS? I always figured 30FPS was the max for a 60HZ display. I know there are faster displays out there, I have a 120HZ SAMSUNG and I turn off that option because it makes everything look like video. I guess I prefer a little blur...

Hey, if it stays at 30 FPS and has a bunch of brumacs and stuff on screen, I'm fine with that.

sure is YOU MAD in here...

Good call. You need all the juice you can muster to make a good looking game on the outdated Xbox hardware.

How does one know how many frames a game runs at? I probably would expect that it take a little bit of research, but I would love to know.

Movies run at 24 frames per second and they look just fine to me. I can't even tell what games run at what fps, all I notice is if the frame rate isn't steady. Where did the 60 frames per second standard really come from? At what point to they just become numbers that are just bullet points on a spec sheet?

Good call, 60 FPS is way over-rated. Just look at the two best looking games out there (Killzone and Uncharted) both are 30 FPS and look amazing while having an enormous amount of detail to boot. Insomniac games has also stated they will only be making 30FPS games in the future so this seems to be the current trend.

i think it just depends on what kind of game you are playing, if its crazy shooting explosions and bodies everywhere, your going to want a smooth frame rates, as compared to something that looks really pretty, and does not have a lot of fast paced action.

30 fps is just fine if you ask me. The first two GoW games still are friggin amazing to look at and ran very smoothly. Mass Effect 2 ran at 30 fps and is absolutely beautiful.
