Volition Reflects On Red Faction: Guerrilla And The Casual Difficulty Effect

Gamers won't have to wait very long to see what Volition and THQ are doing with the sequel to the underrated Red Faction: Guerrilla. During a fiscal 2010 fourth quarter results call today, THQ CEO Brian Farrell revealed the follow-up would be revealed at E3 in Los Angeles next month.

Farrell also made a few comments about what to expect from the next Red Faction.

"We are very pleased with what the team has done to build on the franchises' innovative destruction engine," said Farrell, "with a new story and a new environment to capture gamers' imagination."

Farrell said the company did an "average" job marketing Red Faction: Guerrilla, and cited one way Volition and THQ are hoping to do better this time: the story. The CEO called Red Faction: Guerrilla's storyline "one of the weaker points," and the follow-up will have a "much more appealing game universe and you get the destruction to go with it."

Red Faction: Guerrilla deserved more love, but the positive word-of-mouth on the game after its release should mean the sequel gets more attention when THQ pulls back the curtain.

Ah everything you could do didn't amount anything in the single player. It was definitely the weakest part of the game. That and the swarms of enemies coming from literally nowhere. Seriously if I take out a stronghold, I expect those guys to stay the @#$% out of the area. And stealth was literally nonexistent. They homed in on your position no matter the circumstance. Level design was lacking too. A lot of buildings to bring down, but most were empty and really didn't really have an effect on the gameplay. I remember taking out the support beams in those buildings in the sniper mission from the ground level, toppled it over, watched the snipers fall all the way to the ground with rubble falling on top of them, only to survive the ordeal undamaged. Oh, and also setting off the red alert creating swarms and swarms of enemies while getting shot in the face by the sniper who didn't die from a 5 story fall....ugh. And you know those Ultor era bombs that you attach to your car? I set one off on the large bridge. Complete and utter destruction right? Nope. Just a hole the same size as the car I had attached it to. Cars were still driving past it. Also invisible freakin walls everywhere. If you did the amount of exploring I did, you'd know what I'm talking about. It was annoying as @#$%.

And multiplayer despite the naysayers was the strongest point. Building destruction had a purpose (both gamemode, and destroying vantage points/crushing people) and the frentic action was fantastic to play with several friends. Only thing that was annoying about it was the terrible matchmaking system that would drop people only to have them rejoin the same match a few seconds later. And the odd latency problems that would result in odd draws between two people with sledgehammers. It had potential, but getting a good game to start was a pain. Didn't stop me from having 250+ matches though. :D

Anyways, if they can improve upon the original formula, then it's definitely a purchase for me. Maybe a less cliched character set and some set pieces that don't feel like random boxes with windows drawn on them. Larger buildings with offices and stuff like in the other two games. Terraforming would be nice too. That drilling machine from the first game needs to be oiled up.

    TL;DR: Gimme.

my favorite part of Guirrella was being able to go on a bridge and just start knocking it down piece by piece with the sledgehammer so it had better be in the sequal

Red Faction Guerilla was mentioned to me by a guy who didnt even like video games I rushed out and bought it,not knowing that it just came out that day,man the driving physics are my favorite part and remind me alot of off road interceptor extreme, that and bashing down buildings with a sledgehammer, man I am sooo excited about another red faction ,one of my favorite games in a long time

PLEASE DO NOT BRING IT TO EARTH! I don't think the animations for buildings or graphics could make a convincing earth.

Anyways maybe make Mars more developed with more grass and stuff growing.

Anyways I am excited b/c red faction was awesome

Red Faction: Guerrilla is underrated but Saint's Row 2 is more so. Come on X-Play, 3 out of 5! LOL. But seriously, as much as it's great to hear a Red Faction sequel is under way, I would be more happy if there's news of SR3.

I was worried that it wasn't going to happen for a while because Volition hardly mentioned anything...

this is great to hear. the physics need a bit of tweaking (whole building standing on one little pole?) and the story needs to be vamped up. i always thought red faction had a great opportunity to have a great story dealing with oppression, but, as with most open world games, it took a backseat in guerilla. hopefully they make a better effort with this game.

My big want is to make it so that stealth is a viable option as well as going guns ablazing, like say sneaking into a base planting bombs without a soul noticing and then as soon as you get on that perfect viewpoint and watch the place fall apart and observe the little people scurry about as the place comes crashing down after pressing the detonater.

Red Faction Guerrilla was awesome the destruction was awesome and it kinda gave me like a Firefly/Serenity feeling. And the storyline was great dude comes to an occupied Mars to work with his brother, brother gets killed by the occupiers and brother joins resistance and kicks their ass with a female companion, I just can't wait for the sequel!!!

I will only get this is if 1, they improve the distruction pyshics and 2, they redue the multiplayer.

I liked Red Faction Guerrilla at first, but it wore on me. I mean, you couldn't use any sort of tactics. Once you were in the area, they all knew it and they were all coming for you. Also, there were far too few structures for a game designed around destruction.

Multiplayer was even worse. The maps were far too open and just became a run and gun scramble. Building went down too fast and the game just became a wide open blank map.

If they improve then I will think about giving it a chance. I mean, I did enjoy if for what ti was worth.

Underrated? Ok, everyone is entitled to their opinion but RF: Guerrilla was a steaming pile with a few golden kernels. I get that the game wasn't going for realism, but when vehicle physics make it impossible to climb a minor incline in a heavy vehicle on a planet with less gravity than our own, explosions barely damage enemy units when a friggin sludge hammer annihilates everything thrown at it, and enemies come outa frakkin nowhere and don't stop coming until you elude them, I call bad design. The destruction with the mech suit was sweet though.

Red Faction Guerilla was a good game, but it didn't do anything that was incredibly compelling. Volition put co-op into Saint's Row 2, which was amazing, but they took a step back by not having that in RFG. Why? Makes little sense. Also, the single player campaign was just a lot of driving around and killing people. The missions were very typical for this type of game, and, outside of the destruction, the game was incredibly forgettable.

Volition needs to innovate more in this series. It's odd that Saint's Row 2 can be so much better than their next title (Red Faction Guerilla). Destruction isn't everything. The game has to be fun.

If the next Red Faction doesn't have co-op....it's going to bomb huge.

I loved Red Faction: Guerilla so much! I never owned the other ones because I didn't have a Playstation, but it was so much fun! After playing the demo I preordered it that day! It was so much fun, I just wish they hadn't given places like Oasis grass, it took away from the feel of Mars! I can't wait for the new one, and I really hope you still get to be Alec "Thor" Mason (destroying houses with just a hammer!)

I actually really enjoyed the red faction games (especially guerilla) I like sandbox games in the first place but then you introduce sweet, realistic destruction of buildings and vehicles and you've made one gamer very happy!
