Some gamers have been reporting spotty performance from the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta that launched this morning, whether it's slow download times for the beta itself, slow matchmaking, or inaccessible playlists. So far, it looks like the problem was caused by too many gamers overloading the system at once, and not by a bug or error.
"The Halo: Reach server unavailable at this time. Please try again later" is the message received by some unlucky gamers who are unable to get Reach to play for them.
Bungie issued a statement on their website earlier, posting:
Yup, the backend servers are getting hammered.
We're aware and working to resolve slow matchmaking times and inaccessible playlists. As soon as we're back up and running at full capacity, we'll make some noise. Stay tuned for more information and thanks for your patience.
Even if you're locked out of the game itself, you can reportedly still use the new menus, and customize your Spartan's armor and emblem. So look at it as a chance to look your very best before you start fragging.
Here at G4, we had some small hiccups earlier today, around when East Coast schools let out, but we've been "checking in" on Reach throughout the day, and it seems to be running OK now.How's it going from your end? Are you able to get into the Beta? Is it playing smoothly for you?

so far I've been able to get in about 10 games since i dled it this afternoon
the whole serve not available is frustrating but expected on the first day... other then that, the games i have played have been incredibly fun. I love the new weapons and game types, especially stock pile. The only thing is that that preview video teased me with head hunter and invasion yet I didnt see those at all (head hunter is probably in free for all but invasion is up to speculation).
all i can say is way to go Bungie, it looks like you may have outdone yourself this time

i got home at 3 from school and started downloading. i didn't get to play it until after maury ended at 6

Took a few hours for the matchmaking function to start working for me, but once it did it was totally worth it.

Upgrade your spartan? well if you have no connecting to matchmaking you can't get credits, and without credits you cant buy upgrades to your armor.... well at least i can make him pretty in pink.... and purple.

it took me a bit to get started. about an hour and a half to download the beta. then all the playlists were down so i went to fix up my armour and came back and all was good. i just assumed i was doing something wrong lol

I was checking the IGN board, and people are spazing the hell out and calling for Bungie's blood cause of this. Seriously, its a BETA! The whole point is for the developer to test the game in the wild so that hiccups like this dont happen when people have spent $60 on the final product (see Gears of War 2 and Modern Warfare 2). Yeah, I'm annoyed that I haven't played the Beta, but I didn't have to pay to play it and it's only the first day. CHILL THE HELL OUT.
But then again, IGN does attract a lot of trolls on their boards.

My Advise: log in and let it load, even if you're getting a huge load time or the "unable to connect" message. For me, after a 5 or 6 minute wait, I was connected and playing games smoothly for hours. The only problem was when people would back out after a game and you had to wait for the newcomers to get settled in, which will take a while the first time. If you're lucky enough (or have enough friends), just make a big party and stay together

i find it hard to get too worked up about it. They'll fix it, I'll get to play it, and it will be fun. Don't be too hard on Bungie, they didn't have to let us play it early at all.

Played 2 games once I got home from school. Im East Coast so thats probably part of the problem. Like everyone on my friendslist was having trouble except me

My experience has been a good one. Granted for the first ten minutes it said i couldn't connect to the servers but after that everything ran smoothly

yeah it hasn't been working for me since 4 p.m. but i'm gonna try it later on tonight and see if i can get on. i hope its worth the wait.
