Call of Duty: Black Ops Officially Announced, Dated

Fresh on the heels of its big Bungie partnership announcement, Activision has officially announced the next installment in its Call of Duty franchise -- Call of Duty: Black Ops.

“We can’t wait for our community to experience Call of Duty: Black Ops,” said Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia in a statement to the press. “We have focused our entire studio on this game, with dedicated multiplayer, single-player and co-op teams creating the most intense, gripping and riveting experience possible for our fans on all fronts.”

Rumors of Black Ops popped up late last month, and they were evidently spot on, since Game.co.uk has listed details about the game, including that the game will in fact take place across a variety of time periods and locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic. These details still aren't official, but expect to know more later tonight when the game is featured on GameTrailers TV.

The game’s official site has launched, but the only bit of info is the following blog posting:

“We at Treyarch are excited to reveal our latest development – Call of Duty: Black Ops! Be sure to head over to CallOfDuty.com/blackops  as more details begin to unfold! Follow @JD_2020 and @Treyarch on Twitter for the latest news & discussions regarding Black Ops.”

Should the need arise, feel free to E-Mail me your tips, suggestions, and/or personal philosophies, or follow me on Twitter.

This is going to be a great COD because its being made from Treyarch(people who made WaW)wich is great. Waw takes a lot more skill than mw2, in mw2 u can get a collatoral shot with a sniper 3 to 4 times a day. Waw collatoral shots were very rare. It really tells you something.

I have some serious respect for Treyarch after playing WaW, that game was awesome,
It stands to reason that this game will be awesome as well, and i am looking forward to playing it.

For starters, the focus being on "Black Ops" will most likely make for a much broader / more intense experience spanning across numerous groups & locals. I had always thought it would be too difficult to make a game that was completely set in Vietnam, or Cuba. Visiting a little of each seems to be a much wiser move.

Second, there is a huge amount of real-life black-ops type missions that have taken place throughout history, some of which we have only just now learned about after being declassified. They could weave those stories together with a splash of creative license & construct one hell of a storyline.

And the best part, (imho) seeing that this is Treyarch, there will most likely be a mulitiplayer beta. So a good amount of the glitches & bugs should be ironed out by launch day.

such BS on MW2 common it can be a good game but the massive glitch problems in the begining months was wat killed it i mean no matter how many patches they put in the design of the game play and delayed hit detection just so newbies can get their kills in made MW@ a piece of crap so i have very little expectations for this new game

I'm hesitanat about this game. I feel like it's being rushed and I feel that Modern Warfare 3 is also going to be a bust because Infinaty Ward is falling to pieces. I love the call of duty series, but if they don't take the time to make a godd game there won't be one.

ok so i'm wondering who's bright idea it was to release this game during the same month as Halo: Reach... they're pretty much setting it up to fail. high hopes, low expectations...

Is it world war 2 or modern, not to say Modern Warfare style, but what era?

Ok, as to the era shooters, I think WWII has been bled dry then beaten beyond recognition. Give it a rest at least until the next generation if/when they can do something new and exciting.
If there are going to be eras to look into for FPS', I say tackle some rich untrampled ground like the Korean War, or Vietnam. I doubt WWI could be done, but I am still curious to see if there's a daring developer out there with a unique vision that could bring that era to consoles. Just no Gulf War (1.0) games where you sit around and whine the whole time about seeing no action, then playing one level of almost getting to see action, then you have game over with an epilogue where your friend committed suicide because he "didn't get to take the shot".
