Activision Discusses Subscription Models And The Future Of Call of Duty

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Sledgehammer Games is currently working on a Call of Duty game for Activision that is supposedly going to be a departure from the traditional first-person shooter genre. (Previous job listings indicate the game will most likely be a third-person shooter.) It’s tempting to think, then, that the long-rumored (and by all accounts, inevitable) “subscription” model that Activision has likely been considering for future COD games could in fact play a major part in whatever Sledgehammer is developing.

But as Activision Blizzard senior vice president of worldwide studios Brian Ward explained during today’s LA Games Conference, if this is happening, it won’t be up and running anytime soon.

“Those guys are still ramping up their team. So I think this is more contingent on the work that the guys at Treyarch are doing, and then there are some other pieces of it that some other vendors are working on. And I think I said ‘online’ not ‘subscription,’ because that’s one of the debates. How does this all fit together business model-wise. Is there a subscription? Is there not a subscription?”

Clearly, Activision has a lot to figure out in terms of what a possible subscription model might in fact look like for a Call of Duty game, and getting all of the development pieces together is one of their primary concerns at this point.

“I think there’s a lot of churn on who’s doing what right now with the people we’ve got all across…Treyarch, Sledgehammer, there are some guys left over from Underground Games, there’s the guys at Infinity Ward, and there were some other bits and pieces in it. So I think there are still a lot of assignments to figure out,” said Ward.

However, Activision better figure at least part of it out fast, because, as Ward explained, he expects Activision to roll out their plans for the new online model in the coming months.

“I think for sure by E3. I haven’t been told that’s the case, but I’m just guessing that by the time we get to E3 being in June as it is and Call of Duty 7 coming out in November…There will be a Call of Duty story at E3 for sure, even if it was just a single player game, there’d be a Call of Duty story. So I think that’s when probably in my estimation, and I’m not privy to the actual communication plan, but that’s when I would expect it.”

With so many various entities contributing to the overall Call of Duty brand, it seems natural that consolidation could be in the cards somewhere down the line. But as Ward points out:

“I really couldn’t say. First of all, I think that’s too big of an employee base to be under one unit, especially in a bunch of disparate locations. You know and frankly the Call of Duty business unit was only formed six weeks ago, so I think they need some time to get their feet under them, and there have been a lot of moving pieces in the past few weeks. So I think the business unit really needs time to solidify their plan.”

Ward and analyst Michael Pachter also shared their thoughts on the Bungie/Activision partnership that was announced today, and you can find that conversation right here.

This article makes it seem like Activision is trying to make the Call of Duty franchise into something like MAG, but with pay-to-play.

    Xbox live: $49.95
    COD: $59.95
    DL map packs: $10-15
    Montly Service fee: $$$$

What else do we need to pay for? It's enough that the map packs cost $15, a quarter of the actual game cost.

If they do go to a subscription based gaming then I'll have to stick with single player games.

By the time they release this game, even the diehard fans will be sick of COD.

Paying to play a MMO is understandable given the server size, but paying for a FPS(or third person) is just a ridiculous ploy to get more money. I'll stick with just my XBL Gold Account, k thx.

I cannot wait to Pay to Play! Good lord, this is going to be the best thing ever! I hope they start off charging $50 a month! Maybe we'll get lucky and they can raise it to even more later! Seriously, I cannot get enough of playing pretty much the same game ever year! And now, to have the honor of paying even more, it just blows my mind.

Economic downturn you say? Screw that, we don't need to hold on to our money as there really isn't a reason to save. I say Activision needs to step it up a little though. Not only should they charge us extra monthly premiums, they should go ahead and let us have the ability to link our bank accounts to their services so they can take a certain percentage from every paycheck. Now that would be Awesome!

1 year of CoD + 1 year of WoW + 1 year of XBL = homeless in 1 year.

I can see why they would do a subscription based COD. The money coming in from WOW is huge. If Activision, either through Bungie or through the COD franchise, could replicate even 1/2 that success, then why wouldn't they? Gaming isn't a charity, it's a business. Square, Capcom, Sega, etc., have all done subsciption based gameplay models before, so it's only a matter of time before it hits all genres of gaming. With costs rising on the development side - and this is even before the next gen (this gen is within 18 months of ending - sorry to break it to the people late to the 360/PS3 party)- subscription based models are the future.

subscriptions will come and stay, because most blind fan boys and casual gamers still buy the damn game! Kotick knows that no matter what, their games will always sell because of the blind crowd of ignorant people that are the same ones that complain about dlc being overpriced and then buy it anyway! and so subscriptions will stay because they will be payed.

I know a lot of people, myself included, can just say "Well I just wont buy another call of duty- simple." Im more concerned about what this means for other games. Will we be paying for all multiplayer soon because its "inevitable". When the time comes can gamers make enough of an impact on these huge publishers to have them withdraw a subscription based service? I certainly hope this fails because I loathe the concept with a passion. I dont care if a monthly fee means consistent updates and free DLC.
Lets look at some other facts. The majority of gamers have a 360- FACT (I dont care if you have a ps3 too, but sales are sales). We all know Xbox live is $50/year. The game activision is selling is $60. Maybe all DLC WONT be free and I have to pay for my horse armor. This whole thing is just out of control. Its expensive to be a passionate gamer.

A game would have to be beyond good or even great, for that matter, for me to consider dropping more money on top of XBox Live subscription fees to play it. Like I'm entering the freaking Matrix good...then I might consider it.

Bobby Kotick is going to single handedly drive the COD franchise into the ground. He is going to change the entire concept of COD by switching it for 1st to 3rd person (a major change that will anger a alot of COD fans), Make people pay money per month for a radically altered game. He has also alienated a major cash cow development house - Infinity Ward by refusing to pay them. Let's not forget he doubles the cost of DLC which includes only a few maps, no spec ops missions, nothing special to justify such big price tag. On top of that he wants to saturate the market with a number of development houses working on different COD projects. I guess he didn't learn his lesson from Guitar Hero - you can only milk the cow so far before it starts to produces feces instead of milk.

I am never buying another Activision game because of the way they screwed IW over. If I ever have to I'll use a torrent, there is no way anymore of my money is going into Bobby Koticks wallet. A 3rd person CoD game... really are they that desperate for a new gimmick. Don't get me wrong I love 3rd person shooters like Metal Gear Online, but NOT on a CoD game. If ever got the chance to meet Bobby Kotick I would rip his spine out his ass and then skip rope with it while laughing like a maniac.
