Microsoft isn't going to publish Bungie's next intellectual property, Activision is. Your mind might have melted a bit, but don't worry, the rest of the industry is still reeling from it, too.
What's behind Bungie's decision? The studio should be making the rounds with the press this morning to explain themselves, but Bungie released a brief statement on their website already.
"The story of Bungie is wild, winding, and full of majestic wonder. We’ve treaded many pathways over these last nineteen years. But for all the twists and turns we’ve taken, we’re still doing what we set out to do from the beginning, back when the whole of “Bungie Software Products Corporation” consisted of two friends operating out of a basement in Chicago:
Making kick ass games that we want to play."
Keep reading for the rest of Bungie's color commentary on today's big news.
"And as Bungie has grown, the industry’s best and brightest have been totally accretive to our own creative margins. It’s no secret that while the full might of our studio has focused on making Halo: Reach, another core team, led by our co-founder and Studio Creative Director, Jason Jones, has already begun laying the groundwork to bring our newest universe, stories, and characters to life.
Today, we’re poised to open a new chapter in Bungie’s history—one that begins with a partnership between Bungie and Activision and ends where we always knew it would, with World Domination. Our Next Big Thing now has a concrete path, leading from our studio to the platforms of our choosing. The business formalities are behind us. Our Constitution remains unchanged. We are still Bungie, still independent, and now we are free to bring our stories to an ever bigger audience.
Next up, the most ambitious game we’ve ever made, Halo: Reach. Built upon ten years of experience developing the Halo franchise, we’ve assembled the best team, the best technology, and the best talent to ensure that Reach is the game our fans deserve. Strap in and buckle up tight, we’re sending our baby out with a bang.
Once the smoke clears, all the pieces will finally be in place for Step 7. Don’t worry, though. We won’t let World Domination go to our heads. We’re gonna keep making kick ass games on our own terms, and since you’ve been so supportive throughout the years, we’d love to bring you along for the ride."

The next logical step is for 343 (microsoft) to have Respawn do the next HALO game.

1st. Bungie makes game we wanna play?? All they make are Halo games and they aren't very good.
2nd. Why Activision, of all the publishers out there, you pick the one with a half a billion dollar class action lawsuit going for not paying Infinity Ward employees their overtime, bonuses, royalties, etc. Plus, the lawsuit with the IW founders. This wasn't a smart move on Bungie's part.

-Blam- it. why did Bungie have to do this on the eve of the release of the beta? especially with Activision. well, at least they are still independent...

I'm kind of surprised at the level of shock being displayed here. Just for reference sake, let us remind ourselves that Bungie became the huge success story that it is riding on the back of Micro$oft, another company that clearly looks out for its bottom line more than anything else. The fact that Bungie is merely in partnership with Activision and not being procured by them should indicate that there is not going to be some artistic control that's going to be exchanged from one company to the next. Activision is merely there for distribution purposes beyond the XBox 360.

Unless you meant it, you misspelled Bungie in the title and called them Bungle.

BUNGLE?!?!?!??!?! IM OUTRAGED!!!!

This is just so depressing.
I'm a PS3 only gamer and I think I would have actually preferred Bungie remain exclusive to Microsoft rather than see them working for Activision. Preference for console notwithstanding this feels a lot like Bungie selling out to me.
Though I suppose people said the same thing when Bungie first went to Microsoft, at least MS knew how to treat their golden goose.

Suggested names for the new direction that the Call of Duty franchise could take as brought to you by Bungie and his dark holiness, Mr. K-Tick:
1) "Call of Duty: Space Warfare"
2) "Call of Duty: Ultra Modern Warfare"
3) "Call of Duty: Internal Warfare"
4) "Call of Booty: Chick Fight"

why cant bungie make and publish there own games?

The base of this partnership must have been laid long before the IW debocal, I don't think any studio with the publishing prowess would have signed had they known about the IW fiasco. Hopefully they will continue to make the high quality games they always have.

Dirty Harry said it best... A mans got to know his limitations. Activision will drive the franchise into the ground, just because you want to have multiple consoles doesn't mean sell out. GO RESPAWN!!!!
