Microsoft isn't going to publish Bungie's next intellectual property, Activision is. Your mind might have melted a bit, but don't worry, the rest of the industry is still reeling from it, too.
What's behind Bungie's decision? The studio should be making the rounds with the press this morning to explain themselves, but Bungie released a brief statement on their website already.
"The story of Bungie is wild, winding, and full of majestic wonder. We’ve treaded many pathways over these last nineteen years. But for all the twists and turns we’ve taken, we’re still doing what we set out to do from the beginning, back when the whole of “Bungie Software Products Corporation” consisted of two friends operating out of a basement in Chicago:
Making kick ass games that we want to play."
Keep reading for the rest of Bungie's color commentary on today's big news.
"And as Bungie has grown, the industry’s best and brightest have been totally accretive to our own creative margins. It’s no secret that while the full might of our studio has focused on making Halo: Reach, another core team, led by our co-founder and Studio Creative Director, Jason Jones, has already begun laying the groundwork to bring our newest universe, stories, and characters to life.
Today, we’re poised to open a new chapter in Bungie’s history—one that begins with a partnership between Bungie and Activision and ends where we always knew it would, with World Domination. Our Next Big Thing now has a concrete path, leading from our studio to the platforms of our choosing. The business formalities are behind us. Our Constitution remains unchanged. We are still Bungie, still independent, and now we are free to bring our stories to an ever bigger audience.
Next up, the most ambitious game we’ve ever made, Halo: Reach. Built upon ten years of experience developing the Halo franchise, we’ve assembled the best team, the best technology, and the best talent to ensure that Reach is the game our fans deserve. Strap in and buckle up tight, we’re sending our baby out with a bang.
Once the smoke clears, all the pieces will finally be in place for Step 7. Don’t worry, though. We won’t let World Domination go to our heads. We’re gonna keep making kick ass games on our own terms, and since you’ve been so supportive throughout the years, we’d love to bring you along for the ride."

Please people, refrain yourselves! Bungie is doing what it needs to do. Multi platform games sell much better and make more money than "exclusive" platform games. Do the math. This isn't a sellout or a turncoat deal. It's simply a developer making a wise and financially viable option for their company.
As much as some of you rage and pound your fists and declare that you'll NEVER buy another Activision game EVER again.....you will. And you'll like it. Especially if it's made by Bungie. "Halo" for the PS3? Sweet! Also as sweet would be "God Of War" for the Xbox 360. Both are stellar games and deserve to be played by a wide an audience as possible.
Let's save our judgments and criticisms for the release of this new game franchise. That's the only way we'll know for sure if this is a good or bad move. Thanks :)

I'm really excited about this! Two of the best game developing companies emerging together. Wow! Can't wait to see what games they'll produce. I'm not worried about any future lawsuits like what's taking place now between IW and Activision. That's a totally different railroad that has nothing to do with Bungie.

Oh man... this is hilarious. Mmmmm...

bungie has let their ego get to them

As a devoted Halo and Bungie Fan, I actually look forward to seeing what happens with this. I look forwards to Sony fans getting a chance to experience the quality games that Bungie publishes, maybe we will all be able to agree on something for once.

Is this April 1? lol

Like I said in the main post regarding this subject, this is just a publishing deal and Bungie went to Activision because they are the largest game publisher in the world. About the "Bungie, didn't you all learn anything from IW" statements that people have been saying, for one thing IW was owned by Activision and second, Bungie is NOT owned by anybody, not Microsoft, not Activision, not anybody. Bungie is still an independent game developer. I just want people to see this for what it actually is rather than people accusing Bungie of selling out to Activision when in reality Bungie IS still an independent company.

Soooo if this new ip by bungie makes billions of dollars will Activision then try and sew the lead developers fire them and be like "NO MY MONEY MINE!"

I can understand wanting to change publishers to try and grow creatively, but really, choosing Activison as your next stop doesn't seem to be the wisest decision. Although maybe Bungie was able to cut a good deal with Activison, seeing as the future of many of Actvision's IP's isn't looking too great. From Activision's perspective this could be a VERY good deal for them that will get them a new and more than likely very successful IP. I just hope Bungie remembered to use protection when dealing with Activision.

I find it a bit odd that they would turn to Activision to produce multi-platform games, given the publisher's negative PR at the moment.
If being independent was so important to the company, they easily could have gone for the "EA Partners" route, like what Bioware and Valve have done. Both Bioware and Valve still maintain control over their IPs, and have done reasonably well since the start of the program.

does this mean Halo Reach making its way to PS3?? cause that wud be awesome

This is shocking since it is out of the blue, but I dont think it is totally bizarre. The company that is Bungie is such a monster that it doesn't really make a difference other than more people get the game. It wont be as if Activision has control. I dont really think this is a big deal for 360/microsoft loyalists, others perhaps.

I'm calling it now....Marathon IP is revived, and goes multi-platform.

Apparently, Bungie still retains the rights to its IP. They probably made this deal in light of what's happening to Infinity Ward, but I can only feel that Bungie making a deal with Activision is going to ruin the studio.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
You have sold your soul to the devil Bungie. This will spell your end!
But, besides my hate of Activision, I will still pay attention to what they do next after Halo, but thats like 2 to 3 years away.
