[UPDATE: For more on this story, check out our Bungie interview, and comments from Microsoft, Sony and Bungie.]
As the drama surrounding Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward continues to unfold, Activision has dropped a new bombshell: the company has signed a 10-year publishing agreement with Bungie to bring its "next big action game universe to market."
Activision will have the rights to publish the new intellectual property "on multiple platforms and devices." Does this extend outside Xbox 360? The press release doesn't say, but it seems likely, and in a video released to the press, Activision COO Thompas Tippl said the partnership was about bringing Bungie's next universe to "the platform of your choice."
Bungie, like Respawn Entertainment, retains the rights to the intellectual property. Few details on the project were released, not even a codename or vague release date. For all we know, Bungie's next project is years away. According to the announcement release, the deal has been in the works "over the past nine months."
In a bizarre coincidence, the news comes the same day Halo: Reach moves into open beta for select users, while the rest of the gaming world waits for the official switch to be turned on next week.
"It’s no secret that while the full might of our studio has focused on making Halo: Reach," said the studio on Bungie.net, "another core team, led by our co-founder and Studio Creative Director, Jason Jones, has already begun laying the groundwork to bring our newest universe, stories, and characters to life. Next up, the most ambitious game we’ve ever made, Halo: Reach. Built upon ten years of experience developing the Halo franchise, we’ve assembled the best team, the best technology, and the best talent to ensure that Reach is the game our fans deserve. Strap in and buckle up tight, we’re sending our baby out with a bang."
Bungie claims the partnership is simply to help the company's games reach a larger audience.
"Today, we’re poised to open a new chapter in Bungie’s history—one that begins with a partnership between Bungie and Activision and ends where we always knew it would, with World Domination," said the studio, with their tongue always firmly planted in cheek. "Our Next Big Thing now has a concrete path, leading from our studio to the platforms of our choosing. The business formalities are behind us. Our Constitution remains unchanged. We are still Bungie, still independent, and now we are free to bring our stories to an ever bigger audience."
Bungie remains partnered with Microsoft for Halo: Reach, scheduled for a release this fall on Xbox 360. Microsoft acquired Bungie back in 2000, converting their sci-fi shooter, Halo, into a breakout Xbox launch title. Bungie also produced Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST for Microsoft. The studio managed to broker its independence from Microsoft just days after the launch of Halo 3 for Xbox 360.
Activision continues to deal with the fallout from the firings of former Infinity Ward leadership Vince Zampella and Jason West. The duo have since formed Respawn Entertainment alongside EA Partners. While Electronic Arts is funding the new project, they do not control the intellectual property -- Respawn does. Both West and Zampella are suing Activision for control of the Modern Warfare brand, unpaid royalties and wrongful termination. 38 other former and current Infinity Ward employees recently filed suit against Activision over money, as well. It's possible the two lawsuits may be merged together.
Halo: Reach is largely expected to be Bungie's last self-developed Halo release. Microsoft formed 343 Industries, involving talent like Kojima Production assistant producer Ryan Payton and former Bungie content manager Frank O'Connor, to oversee the future of the Halo franchise from within Microsoft.

Wow. Fanboys on both ends can stop pissing themselves. Hey fellow PS3 owners, Halo will never come to the system that's the way it is. And fellow 360 owners, this isn't the end of the world, I'm willing to bet that this really won't have any significant effect on you whatsoever.

It pretty clear that Activision is trying to save its own ass since Infinity Ward has pretty much left the building. I have to question why a comapny like Bungie felt the need to partner with someone else when they are already sucessful enough as is?
EziMo
This is just awful Activision will probley just end up screwing Bungie over.
Why cant Activision do there own thing instead of piggy backing off other companys? but mabey some good games will come out of this who knows
as long as PS3 user dont get there grubby hands on Halo ill be a happy chappy.

Never saw that coming. The Bungie logo will most likely boot up in the future on Microsoft AND Sony products! The future is wierd. Activision loss: Infinity Ward; Activision gain: Bungie. Pretty even trade-off as far as past sales have shown. Halo is still my game though, MW2 is awesome, don't get me wrong, but ever since Halo C.E. my life has never been the same, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
damann45
well well well....is there going to be a guitar hero effect with halo now?! Don't ruin such a legendary game franchise like Halo activision! DO NOT!
ezeraeze
OH! AS AN EXTREME SONY FANBOY, I FEEL SORRY FOR 360 OWNERS!! I TRUELY DO!! LOOK FOR BUNGIE'S WEBSITE, YOU WILL SEE CONTACT US, GET THEIR PHONE NUMBER AND BEG THEM, CRYING HELPS TOO. IF THEY DON'T ANSWER, EMAIL THEM. THIS IS GOING TO RUIN BUNGIE!! YOU MAY SAY 'NO WAY'. REMEMBER WHEN INFINITY WARD RELEASED MW2? EVERYONE WAS LIKE INFINITY WARD IS RICH AND AWESOME. YET, ACTIVISION MANAGED TO BRING THEM DOWN!!! THIS IS A WARNING!!

I honestly have to say, i'm kind of shocked. lol i hope they don't whore there new franchise like activision is whoring guitar hero...honestly i'm getting kind of sick of it

Ha ha! You Sony fans are such failures(not suprising). If you would read the bottom of the article it says "Halo: Reach is largely expected to be Bungie's last self-developed Halo release.(pay attention here) Microsoft formed 343 Industries, involving talent like Kojima Production assistant producer Ryan Payton and former Bungie content manager Frank O'Connor, to oversee the future of the Halo franchise from within Microsoft." meaning MS still owns the rights to Halo and that Halo is NOT repeat NOT going to the PS3. Its funny how many of you actually got your hopes up and thought Halo was going to the PS3. Thank you PS3 fanboys. I haven't had a good laugh like that in a long time.
chubi-_-
wow that was shocking... but maybe this will be a good thing maybe there will be halo for playsttion finally i know its unlikely but i like halo but i have no 360 ive never had an xbox but any way even though i hate activision 90% of the time maybe this will get bungie on other platforms if so im happy
RockieOllie
This is all turning into a giant soap opera. Last time in All my Consoles:
InfinityWard breaks up with Activision and takes everything that belongs to him.
and sues for emotional damages
Activistion being the FPS slut that it is hooks up with Bungie!
Drifter_2088
(i dont think this mean halo is goin on the ps3, dont be mad because microsoft not only stole ya precious final fantasy 13, but it also stole the rest of the metal gear solid franchise, gta4, and also is about 2 steal ff14, and xbox also stole other games also but im jus not thinkin right now) the above is a personal message to callofdutycrewmember
now the bungie situation could go both ways, one it could be a real bad thing, meaning tht bungie loses most of its fans makin bad decisions, and gain not of a strong fan base tht it has now, or it can be tht they gain a even stronger fan base. i kinda no bout the IW situation and i would really hate for bungie to have to deal with that kinda of stuff. i really hope tht they triple checked tht contract with activision, and, also make there games the way they have been making thm, which is always fun, never gets old, and only for the 360 lol. not givin the big titles to ps3... thts all
Ckyline
this is an eye opener for me
callofdutycrewmember
hell yes suck it xbox your not keeping halo were getting it better learn to share or well take it from your platform all together and ill just watch xbox die!!!! once that happens
PS3 FTW
Gun_Metal_Tiger
I can't help but feel like this will hurt Halo Reach, hopefully they aren't doing a lazy job on Halo Reach because they have this other game to develop for Activision, but also that they support Halo Reach with all the care they did for Halo 2 and 3. I can see Activision having a problem with Bungie developing DLC for Halo Reach when they are supposed to be their exclusive publisher from now on.
gagedragon
oooooh hell no. Activision going to kill halo like the did guitar hero and COD. Halo RIP 2011
gEARhead24
WHAT!!!!!!! Why bungie, why bungie, why out off all the publishers you had to chose activision. Activison is against creativity and what they did to IW. Bungie I care for u it is good to see u reaching out outside of Microsoft for once but choosing activison out of all the publishers was not smart.
xxCoolMikexx
Dear Activision,
Please don't eff up Halo. kkthx
Espeeko
